250. Being A Writer, and Being Yourself: An Interview with Sara Flynn and Meg Tilly

Sarah chats with romance author Sara Flynn and Golden Globe winning actress Meg Tilly – conveniently the same person! Sara attended RT for the first time, and was the emcee for the awards ceremony. We start by talking about identity, about being yourself, and investing your own energy in things you value. We also talk about her experience at RT, her writing, her process, and how acting may have informed her writing style. We also talk about her new book, Solace Island, and learning to write romance when it’s something you truly, truly love.

Trigger warning: 48:25 – 48:35 min

Earlier books published under the name Meg Tilly deal with abuse, and she mentions the plot of one that may be upsetting. So skip ahead if that might upset you, k? I want you to feel safe.

Beyond Reason

This podcast is brought to you by Beyond Reason by Kat Martin. New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin combines all the romantic tension readers love, but with more suspense than ever, debuting her brand-new writing direction with Beyond Reason.

Her new novel raises chills as danger stalks a woman determined to make it in a man’s world. Kat Martin is the latest to join this exciting trend in female-driven novels for the thriller audience, which is growing rapidly in the marketplace. Beyond Reason has all of Kat Martin’s strengths on full display: strong characters, plenty of fast-paced action and danger, hot alpha heroes, and her taut yet engaging writing style. But this time Kat Martin amps up the suspense for a thriller forward plot involving big-rig trucking, drug smuggling, murder, and lies.

Five weeks ago Carly Drake stood at her grandfather’s grave. Now she’s burying Drake Trucking’s top driver, and the cops have no leads on the hijacking or murder. Faced with bankruptcy, phone threats and the fear of failure, Carly has to team up with the last man she wants to owe—Lincoln Cain.

Cain is magnetic, powerful, controlling—and hiding more than one secret. He promised Carly’s granddad he’d protect her. The old man took a chance on him when he was nothing but a kid with a record, and now he’s the multi-millionaire owner of a rival firm.

But Linc’s money can’t protect Carly from the men who’ll do anything to shut her down, or the secrets behind Drake Trucking. If she won’t sell out, the only way to keep her safe is to keep her close . . . and fight like hell.

Beyond Reason is on sale now wherever books are sold and on KensingtonBooks.com.

  1. KtB says:

So I have to ask, I laughed so hard I lost control of my lawnmower when Meg said, “Well Hell’s Bells!” About having a realization. Isn’t that an exclamation from a family in a romance series? Maybe the Mallory family from Johanna Lindsey? I can’t remember for sure but maybe someone else in the Bitchery can HaBo. 🙂
I was simply tickled that other people might find their own vocabulary altered by the romances they read….I can’t be the only midwestern girl living in the south who says “Bloody Hell” courtesy of all the historic romances I read.

And yes, I mow every Friday in the morning just so I can listen to your podcast.

  2. KtB says:

And is Sara Flynn’s book missing from the book link list? I could google myself…but I’m lazy…

  3. KtB says:

Silly me, I could click on her website link. I guess I just like seeing all the pretty covers….

  4. SB Sarah says:

@KtB: My fault! It should be listed there now. Apologies!!

  5. Karenmc says:

Charming interview, and when my mother was pretty upset about something, “Hell’s Bells” was her go-to phrase.

  6. sara flynn says:

I love the juxtaposition of you driving the lawnmower (any woman who can operate heavy-duty machinery gets my admiration) and and listening to SBTB romance podcast. There’s a real-life romance heroine right there.

And yes, I’m sure my vocabulary has been changed by all the romance I’ve read. I’m wondering, maybe the ‘hells bells” were in my much loved Pamela Morsi’s books? Seems like it would fit. Or maybe the Lavyrle Spencer’s The Hellion?

Anyway, it feels fun on the tongue!

  7. Ren Benton says:

@KtB: You are NOT the only midwestern girl living in the south who says “bloody hell” courtesy of historic romances. That’s my go-to swear in swearing-is-inappropriate settings. It seemed so charming and refined when I was young, and then I heard that in merry olde England, it’s right up there on the wash-your-mouth-out-with-soap hierarchy, and then I **really** felt like I was getting away with something when I flung it out there.

My profanulary has since expanded with Spanish, Yiddish, and other miscellaneous cultural appropriations, but there’s always a chance a bystander will be able to translate one of those, so I stick with “bloody hell” when I want to cuss somebody out while maintaining the illusion I’m a lady. 😀

  8. chacha1 says:

“Hell’s bells” is one of my go-to office swears. 🙂

Contemporary romantic suspense is usually not my thing, but I am a fan of MT and so I am going to put it on my wishlist.

If anyone reading out there has not seen “Bomb Girls,” I recommend it. A lot of good work was done by a lot of people, but MT acted everyone else off the screen.

  9. Ruth says:

OMG! I would SOOOO read a book about shape-shifting-seal Navy SEALs. Brilliant concept!

“Behold your Queen” was one of my very favorite YA books! I read all of Gladys Malvern in junior high and collected some of them for my personal library when Ebay and ABE books made is possible to track down copies of out-of-print YA novels (many of which were only published in library editions). As you can see, some Gladys Malvern books are now back in print, through the efforts of someone who has made it her mission — I actually lent her a copy of a Malvern book she didn’t have for her to scan.

I think it might be an interesting podcast to talk to the women who have been resurrecting out-of-print books they loved when they were 12. Image Cascade Publishing is another — they’ve been reissuing Sally Watson (there’s a supercool story that goes with that!). I’m not sure either Sally Watson or Gladys Malvern are strictly romance — more like girls adventure/coming of age novels with a romantic conclusion.
