The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend
The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald is $1.99 and is a KDD! Sarah picked this for January 2016’s Hide Your Wallet. Other readers said the book does a great job of creating a sense of place. However, some felt there was a lot of repetition in the book and the interactions felt forced. We also had a great guest review of this one!
This is a book about books. All sorts of books, from Little Women and Harry Potter to Jodi Picoult and Jane Austen, from to Stieg Larsson to Joyce Carol Oates to Proust. It’s about the joy and pleasure of books, about learning from and escaping into them, and possibly even hiding behind them. It’s about whether or not books are better than real life.
It’s also a book about a Swedish girl called Sara, her elderly American penfriend Amy and what happens when you land a very different kind of bookshop in the middle of a town so broken it’s almost beyond repair.

I don’t mind the change to the Mary Balogh cover, but I kind of wish the trend for only showing the bottom half of people faces would go away.
Silver and Blood was an ok read for me, it has kinda beauty and the beast vibes with a hidden magical house in the woods. I didn’t realize it was a duology when I picked it up so I found the ending very abrupt and I wasn’t super pleased about that. I will probably read the second one sometime but it isn’t high on my list.
The fact that it is fantasy instead of sci-fi which Mihalik has previously written was a big disappointment to me. I love sci-fi and sci-fi romances aren’t that common so I was really disappointed to see her step into fantasy which I feel has a bit of a glut of books on the market right now.
@Alexandra Y: What other sci-fi romances have you read? I think sci-fi romance is underappreciated, too! I know I’ve seen ones by Amanda Bouchet, Aliette de Bodard has written a couple of Sapphic ones. If you like YA at all, there are more options there.
@Kareni: I just started a reread of Sarina Bowen’s Bountiful so I was delighted to find it among the free books in your link to hearteyespress. Sadly, when I follow the hearteyes link, Bountiful and all the books that I checked on are not free. Am I doing something wrong? I did subscribe to their newsletter but it didn’t seem to help.
@Karenji: In the words of beloved SNL News commentator, “Never Mind.” I was looking for the audio versions of the heat eyes press offerings. The reason I couldn’t take advantage of the offerings is, um, that I already own the ebooks. Sorry. I’m just going to go retreat into a book.
@stephanie: I wonder what the thinking is behind the half-a-face covers? Someone obviously thinks it’s going to increase sales, but I’ve always thought it was weird and off-putting.

SLIGHTLY MARRIED was my favorite of the slightly series, as I liked both Aidan and Eve. The scene where he tells her of her brother Percy’s death is poignant, as Eve, who adored Percy, is overwhelmed, “engulfed in pain, blinded, deafened by it, by the unbearable agony of loss”. She doesn’t wear mourning because Percy asked her not too, but she has her court dress made in black in Percy’s honor. I thought that was a lovely tribute and liked her; she is a strong-willed heroine who isn’t stupidly defiant.
As for Aidan, when Eve tells him he never smiles, his response is telling: “I am a killer,” he said abruptly, “I kill for a living. There is nothing very amusing about that.” Many of Balogh’s books have these short, seemingly throwaway lines that are actually so deeply indicative of character. And it turns out Aidan is the one who wanted to devote himself to the land and Wulfric, his older brother, who wanted to be a soldier. It was the vagaries of birth order that meant Wulf was the Duke and Aidan the soldier.
Kayelle Alan has an extensive series or connected series of MM sci-fi romances. It’s not my area of interest right now, so I haven’t read them, but maybe worth checking out if you like that kind of thing.

I also love how Balogh (Aidan) doesn’t “slut shame” Eve for not being a virgin!

Don’t know why this made my heart do a little patter but I suppose b/c it was refreshing to read, back then, when so many other historical romances published at the time had the male protagonists complaining “Ach, I’m not her first! How I can ever trust her again!!” lol
