Audrey Lane Stirs the Pot
Audrey Lane Stirs the Pot by Alexis Hall is $1.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This is book three in the Winner Bakes All series and came out in December. Do any of you have a favorite in the series? I liked book one, but hated book two.
A charming new LGBTQIA+ romcom from the bestselling author of BOYFRIEND MATERIAL.
Audrey Lane is perfectly fine. Really. So what if she left her high-powered job as a Very Important Journalist—and her even higher-powered long-term girlfriend—to live a quiet life as a reporter for the second-biggest newspaper in Shropshire? And so what if she keeps hearing that same higher-powered long-term now-ex-girlfriend in her head night and day, constantly judging just how small Audrey’s allowed her life to become?
She’s fine. She’s happy. She’s perfectly within her groove. Do not-in-their-groove people get weekday drunk and impulsively apply for the UK’s most beloved baking show?
All right, so maybe she’s not completely fine, but being on Bake Expectations is opening her world again in ways she never anticipated. First through fellow contestant Doris, whose personal story of queer love during WW2 captures Audrey’s heart, imagination and journalistic interest like nothing has in ages. Then through Jennifer Hallet, the most foul-tempered (and fouler-mouthed) producer, woman, and menace Audrey has ever met. Jennifer should be off-limits, but her fire lights something unexpected inside of Audrey, making her want to burn back a million times brighter. A million times hotter. A million times more herself than she’s been in a long, long time.

Dinner in One
Dinner in One by Melissa Clark is $1.99! I’ve seen this one recommend in the comments a few times. I love a good, quality cookbook that doesn’t make me buy one-time ingredients that will probably sit in my pantry for a while. Is that the case here? For those who have used it, are there any favorite recipes?
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • 100 all-new super-simple and incredibly delicious one-pot, one-pan, one-sheet—one-everything!—recipes from the star food writer and bestselling author of Dinner in French .
ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE Food & Wine
Melissa Clark brings her home cook’s expertise and no-fuss approach to the world of one-pot/pan cooking. With nearly all of the recipes being made in under one hour, the streamlined steps ensure you are in and out of the kitchen without dirtying a multitude of pans or spending more time than you need to on dinner.
Expect to find a bevy of sheet-pan suppers (Miso-Glazed Salmon with Roasted Sugar Snap Peas), skillet dinners (Cheesy Meatball Parm with Spinach), Instant Pot® pinch hitters (Cheaters Chicken and Dumplings), comforting casseroles (Herby Artichoke and Gruyere Bread Pudding) that you can assemble right in the baking dish, crowd-pleasing one-pot pasta meals (Gingery Coconut Noodles with Shrimp and Greens), vegetable-forward mains, and dozens of tips for turning a vegetarian or meat-based recipe vegan. And since no dinner is complete without dessert, you’ll find a chapter of one-bowl cakes, too—from an Easy Chocolate Fudge Torte to a Ricotta-Olive Oil Pound Cake.

I’ll Have What He’s Having
I’ll Have What He’s Having by Adib Khorram is $3.99! Dahlia mentioned this one in her Queer Romance Roundup. Carrie also gave it a B-:
This was a lovely read that didn’t ask too much of my emotions. It was comforting but forgettable. I could read a chapter, wander off, and not think of it again for a month…but when I did get around to picking it up, I instantly remembered how warm and fuzzy it was.
A smart, tender, vivacious romantic comedy about mistaken identities, the line between love and sex, and the way one night—and one person—can change your life forever.
When it comes to love, Farzan Alavi is a disaster. After his most recent heartbreak, he’s drowning his sorrows at Kansas City’s newest wine bar. Only instead of being crowded between strangers, he’s escorted to a VIP table for one. There, the hot sommelier does more than treat him to the meal of his life. The way he flirts with Farzan ignites instant sparks.
There’s just one problem: David Curtis thinks Farzan is Frank Allen, Kansas City’s most influential food critic. The truth only comes out after the two spend an unforgettably hot night together. Good news—both think the mix-up is hilarious. Bad news—David is studying to become a master sommelier and has no interest in a relationship.
Neither expects their paths to cross again . . . until Farzan inherits his family’s bistro and needs David’s restaurant knowledge. The two agree to an exchange: David will answer Farzan’s questions, and Farzan will help David study for his test. Only business turns to pleasure when neither can ignore the attraction still sizzling between them. But with David set on moving after his test, and Farzan committed to his family’s restaurant, how can their relationship last past the expiration date?

Fuzz
Fuzz by Mary Roach is $2.99! I love Roach’s niche non-fiction titles where she focuses on one, sometimes quirky, topic. Do you have a favorite Roach book?
What’s to be done about a jaywalking moose? A bear caught breaking and entering? A murderous tree? Three hundred years ago, animals that broke the law would be assigned legal representation and put on trial. The answers are best found not in jurisprudence but in science: the curious science of human-wildlife conflict, a discipline at the crossroads of human behavior and wildlife biology.
Roach tags along with animal-attack forensics investigators, human-elephant conflict specialists, bear managers, and “danger tree” faller blasters. Intrepid as ever, she travels from leopard-terrorized hamlets in the Indian Himalaya to St. Peter’s Square in the early hours before the pope arrives for Easter Mass, when vandal gulls swoop in to destroy the elaborate floral display. She taste-tests rat bait, learns how to install a vulture effigy, and gets mugged by a macaque.
Combining little-known forensic science and conservation genetics with a motley cast of laser scarecrows, langur impersonators, and trespassing squirrels, Roach reveals as much about humanity as about nature’s lawbreakers. When it comes to “problem” wildlife, she finds, humans are more often the problem—and the solution. Fascinating, witty, and humane, Fuzz offers hope for compassionate coexistence in our ever-expanding human habitat.

I have read three out of four:
I love Alexis Hall but the bake expectations series is not my favorite. I found GBBO too stressful to watch, however, which is not most people’s experience with it, so I suspect my opinion is as usual irrelevant to just about everyone. FWIW I think the books are funny, and worth reading even if I doubt I will reread any. In this case my complaint is mainly that Jennifer was the best thing about the first two books and I found her just sort of, idk, less, in this. It doesn’t have Paris levels of anxiety or disregard for one’s partner, if either of those were the problems with book 2.
Melissa Clark has good recipes that are… they’re not like Ottolenghi levels of complicated, but even what she calls easy and quick is like, ok sure, for someone who considers making dinner their whole evening’s entertainment. I certainly don’t think she tends to call for unnecessary or wildly unusual ingredients but I come from a family of cooks and live in nyc so again, potentially useless POV.
I was underwhelmed by I’ll Have What He’s Having but possibly only because Adib Khorram has written some of the only YA I genuinely enjoyed so my expectations were too high. He’s certainly a good writer, and this was funny and sweet. Again, not something I am tempted to reread, but definitely worth reading once.
My favorite Mary Roach book is “Bonk,” that I learned about on this site. I have since read all of her books, including the most recent “Replaceable You.” I’ve learned some things and been grossed out a bit, and thoroughly enjoyed both experiences. She makes science approachable.

I like most of Melissa Clark’s recipes. The miso salmon is outstanding!
Fuzz is my favorite of Mary Roach’s books. I love animals so I found it fascinating as well as entertaining. She has a great interview with Terry Gross that’s worth a listen even if you don’t read the book. Link provided if interested.
