I liked Balogh’s SLIGHTLY MARRIED and thought it was an effective set-up for the Bedwyn saga. Aidan is cool and unemotional, and I found his response to Eve’s observation that he never smiles piercing and poignant: “I am a killer,” he said abruptly, “I kill for a living. There is nothing very amusing about that.” Balogh lays out in one powerful sentence exactly what it is that soldiers do. Yet it turns out Aidan is the one who wanted to devote himself to the land and Wulfric who wanted to be a soldier, but the vagaries of birth order meant Wulf was the Duke and Aidan the soldier.
Slightly Married is an all time favorite for me. While both noble and honorable, neither main character looks for attention or seeks pleasure. But they are both committed to duty. Their love story is beautiful – tissues needed.
