Links: Kickstarters, Sailor Moon, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome back to Links!

Apologies if there are any errors. There is a cat in my lap who does not approve of me reaching over her head to type. No matter how many pet breaks or forehead kisses I give her.

A friend and I watched The Thursday Murder Club Netflix adaptation this weekend. I thought it was okay if you hadn’t read the book. Otherwise, I’m a little eh on some of the changes they made.

Your thoughts? (Be wary of spoilers in the comments!)

To use spoiler tags, it’s [spoiler*]text here[/spoiler*], but remove the asterisks.

If you haven’t watched it yet, there’s still time before our discussion thread goes up this Saturday.

Do you love puzzles and Mariana Zapata romances? There’s a Kickstarter with only a few days left for special edition hardcovers and puzzles of memorable scenes.

Sarah sent me this link because it’s very much in my house of wheels. It’s an article in Vogue about how Sailor Moon influenced 90s fashion. Hell yeah.

Another Kickstarter! This is a board game for Austenites. I’m thinking about backing it. I’ve backed a previous project from this game designer (Botany) and loved it. I believe I also have another game of theirs, but have yet to test it out.

Enjoy this dreamy mashup of Kesha and ABBA.

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

I think it was ok considering that they had to get it down to a movie length but the depth in almost all of the characters was lost. You don’t really see Elizabeth’s moral gray area; Chris Hudson lost pretty much all of what made his character interesting in the book and I think they did Bogdan wrong in the end of the movie. You get a vague idea of why Ventham is bad but not the true extent. The casting was excellent but I think a series would have given more time to see the character development better.

@PrincessFluffy: Agree with all your points!

Thank you for the Kickstarter links. I was tempted by the Zapata puzzles (love the connection the campaign draws between slow burn and piecing together puzzles, but whoever wrote that has never seen competitive puzzlers in action), but in the end decided only the Wall of Winnipeg scene stood out for me. Fortunate, because I am currently dithering over tiers in another kickstarter you mentioned a couple of weeks back: the After the End anthology featuring post-apocalyptic novellas by Ali Hazelwood, Adriana Herrera, Nikki Payne, Nina Saxena, Claire Kent, Elizabeth Stephens, Cate C Wells and Sherry Thomas (dang, that lineup).

“The Oral History of Raccacoonie [from] ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once'” https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/oral-history-raccacoonie-everything-everywhere-all-at-once). I expected this to be a typical quickie Web article but it goes deep! They interview several people involved and go into the origin, production, impact, and its meaning to various people.

  5. Overall, I enjoyed the movie. The cast was great, and the castle (?) where they filmed was gorgeous. But I think I would have liked it better if I hadn’t read the book first and realized how much was changed in the movie.

A friend who loves the Thursday Murder Club books said she thought it would be better as a limited series, say four episodes, and I agree with her. They cut out quite a few subplots, and the ending was pretty different than the book.

I made a pact with myself when they announced the adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club that I wouldn’t look at the books again until I’d watched the show and that I would do my best to judge the film on its own merits. Definitely should have been a limited series as the development of characters and relationships was far too shallow. That said, I absolutely adored most of the casting choices.

I have backed the Endearment Kickstarter because I am both a nerd for games and Jane Austen, so I couldn’t resist. And this will give me an alternative to Marrying Mr. Darcy when the fancy occasions. . . .
