  • Unromance

    Unromance by Erin Connor

Unromance by Erin Connor is $3.99! This is a recent release, coming out in January. I believe this is in the queue for Cover Awe and it was mentioned on Hide Your Wallet.

A recently dumped TV heartthrob enlists a jaded romance novelist to ruin romance for him—one rom-com trope at a time—so he never gets swept off his feet again . . .

Sawyer Greene knows romance. She’s a bestselling author of the genre—or she was, until her ex left her with nothing but writer’s block and a broken heart. But when she gets stuck in the elevator with a handsome stranger, she sees their meet cute for what it is: just a one-night stand. It might have worked, too, if they could stop running into each other.

Actor Mason West sees Sawyer’s reappearance in his life as a sign. Obviously, they’re meant to cure each other. Him of the hopeless romanticism that only ends in heartbreak—and tabloid trainwrecks—and Sawyer of her writer’s block. Their agreement is simple: 1. No (more) sex, and 2. No matter how swoony the circumstances, absolutely no falling in love.

It’s a foolproof plan–until Sawyer and Mason find that, once set in motion, some plots can’t be stopped—and that they might be hurtling towards a happy ending…

  • Game Changer

    Game Changer by Rachel Reid

READER RECOMMENDED: Game Changer by Rachel Reid $1.99! Uh oh, this has had the dreaded illustrated cover redesign. This is the first book in a series of the same name and is a M/M hockey romance. I know other books in the series have been reviewed on the site. Are you a fan? Do you have a favorite?

New York Admirals captain Scott Hunter takes his pregame rituals very seriously. In this case, it’s not just a lucky smoothie he’s craving—it’s the man who made it.

Pro hockey star Scott Hunter knows a good thing when he sees it. So, when a smoothie made by juice bar barista Kip Grady precedes Scott breaking his on-ice slump, he’s desperate to recreate the magic…and to get to know the sexy, funny guy behind the counter.

Kip knew there was more to Scott’s frequent visits than blended fruit, but he never let himself imagine being invited back to Scott’s penthouse. Or kissed with reckless abandon, never mind touched everywhere all at once. When it happens it’s red-hot, incredible and frequent, but also only on Scott’s terms and always behind his closed apartment doors.

Scott needs Kip in his life, but with playoff season approaching, the spotlight on him is suddenly brighter than ever. He can’t afford to do anything that might derail his career…like introducing the world to his boyfriend. Kip is ready to go all-in with Scott—but how much longer will he have to remain a secret?

  • The Wild One

    The Wild One

The Wild One by Danielle Harmon is $1.99! Sarah and I discussed this one on our December 1997 RT Rewind episode. Sarah remembers really loving the cover, though sadly it has since been updated.

England, 1776: Lord Gareth de Montforte is known as an irresponsible rake with a heart of gold. When he takes a bullet for boldly thwarting a stagecoach robbery, he is stunned to discover that the beautiful young woman he has heroically rescued, Juliet Paige, is his deceased brother’s American fiancée, accompanied by her infant daughter. Despite his brother the duke’s refusal to acknowledge Juliet, Gareth is determined to do right by the courageous woman who crossed an ocean to give her baby her rightful name. But Juliet is wary of marrying this black sheep aristocrat, even while she is hopelessly charmed by the dashing devil. Never has she met anyone who embraces life so thoroughly, who makes her laugh, who loves her so well. And, even when it seems the odds are against them, Juliet has absolute faith that Gareth will go beyond the call of duty, risking his life itself to give her and her daughter a home — and a love that will last a lifetime.

  • Puck and Prejudice

Puck and Prejudice by Lia Riley

Puck and Prejudice by Lia Riley is $1.99! This features a hockey player entering a marriage of convenience after being thrown back in time. Jane Austen also plays a secondary character. I have to be honest; this one did not  land with me at all. YMMV!

From the author of Mister Hockey comes a sizzling marriage of convenience romance between a pro hockey player who accidentally travels back in time to Regency Era England and the brazen contemporary of Jane Austen he just can’t help but fall for…

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a modern single man in possession of a hockey jersey may be exactly what a Regency woman needs to avoid the shackles of marriage…

Goalie for the Austin Regals, Tucker Taylor is benched due to health issues. So he decides to visit his sister in England. But an accidental plunge into an icy pond thrusts him back to 1812 where he comes face to face with a captivating blue-eyed woman who regards him as if he’s grown two heads.

Lizzy Wooddash dreams of a life surrounded by books, engaging conversation, the presence of literary icons like Jane Austen, and… nary a husband in sight. But in Regency England, only widows like her cousin Georgie enjoy freedom and solitary pursuits, unencumbered by expectations. The only way to quickly become a widow is by marrying a dying man or killing a perfectly healthy one, neither of which Lizzy desires.

A visitor from the future might just be the husband of her dreams. Once married, they can figure out how to return Tucker to his proper time, and his absence—aka death—will make Lizzy the widow she always dreamed of becoming. Yet as sparks ignite, they soon realize that matters of the heart rarely adhere to carefully laid plans. Can their love stand the test of time, or will Lizzy get exactly what she wanted…as well as a broken heart?

I’m not a fan of cartoon covers to begin with, but that one for Game Changer is ridiculous.

  2. bailsandherbooks says:

If there’s anyway to select which cover you would prefer on kindle, I would be overjoyed. Some books I only remember based on the cover vs title. I know you could via Calibre for non DRM files, but that’s so much work. If our Amazon overlords are reading, please make it an option!

(I am trying to limit my Amazon footprint as much as possible, but am shackled to my kindle for now).

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

IMHO, GAME CHANGER is the weakest of Reid’s Game Changers books and—had I not read HEATED RIVALRY first—I probably would not have continued with the series. One of the problems is that Kip doesn’t appear to exist for any other reason than to give Scott a reason to come out (even Scott thinks of Kip—who occasionally wears eye shadow & mascara—as “his pretty painted boyfriend”). Also, I understand GAME CHANGER was based on Reid’s Captain America/Bucky Barnes fan-fic, and I think that shows. Reid has really grown as a writer since GAME CHANGER, but if you want to be a Reid completist (and prepare for tomorrow’s release of her latest, THE SHOTS YOU TAKE), it won’t be a complete waste of your time to read GAME CHANGER, do but keep in mind that the rest of the series gets better. However, there’s nothing that can help that cover…nothing.

  5. kkw says:

Seconding everything @DDD said regarding Game Changer, except I did read it first, and indeed I did not plan to continue with the series. It really does get better. Ilya is one of my favorite hockeyverse characters.
Although I think Fitzpatrick, Baran, and Gale all have better series. I sometimes cannot believe how much hockey romance I have read…

  6. book_reader_ea01sj71r4 says:

@kkw – yes. I’ve never a single NHL game. Yet I’ve read approximately a million ice hockey romances. It’s very odd!

  7. denise says:

Enjoyed Puck & Prejudice. Less emphasis on hockey in this book.

The Wild One cover has been updated several times, I think.

  8. spinsterrevival says:

I agree with everything said about the cover of Game Changer as it’s pretty horrible, but at least they got the smoothie color correct.

(I’ve never watched a full hockey game either but flipped to one randomly once and thought I’d check it out considering how many hockey romances I read, and all I could think of was that the books make it seem way more exciting—also I couldn’t follow the puck at all which was really annoying)

  9. Omphale says:

Hockey is definitely one of those sports best enjoyed in person. Much like with basketball, I have no idea how ‘set plays’ work when everything is moving so much, but I appreciate the athleticism.

I also agree with kkw above that Reid’s books are not the ones I recommend to folks who are interested in M/M hockey romance.

If you haven’t checked out Unrivaled by Ashlyn Kane and Morgan James, I recommend it. I also appreciate that those two write hockey bodies in terms of what the players need to perform (lots of players need to carry extra fat at the beginning of the season because they burn so much weight during the season) and it’s not just all 8-packs and V cuts.

  10. N says:

Puck and Prejudice was fun, definitely a suspend disbelief type of book but enjoyable! There’s way less hockey than the title and cover imply.

  11. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I’m a huge baseball fan and love the intricacies and subtleties of the game. And I know enough about football to be able to watch a game and understand what’s going on. But my knowledge of hockey is limited to romance novels, so I was as surprised as everyone else recently that, while playing a connections/categories type game, I managed to deduce HOCKEY from “Sin Bin”, “In the Crease”, and “Between the Pipes”. Thank you, Romancelandia!

  12. Margarita says:

Currently enjoying Baran’s latest and would like to try Fitzpatrick. Which of her books would you recommend? Thank you!

  13. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Margarita: my favorite Fitzpatrick is THROWN IFF THE ICE, but be forewarned, it’s a beautiful live story but technically not a romance because it does not have an HEA. I also enjoyed her Between the Teeth trilogy (COMING IN FIRST PLACE, AND THEN, and BETWEEN THE TEETH) which follows the professional and romantic journey of a neuro-divergent player. You could also check out some of Fitzpatrick’s work on AO3 (under Youcouldmakealife), especially ALWAYS IN TANDEM & STILL ALWAYS IN TANDEM.

  14. Margarita says:

    @DiscoDollyDeb thank you very much!
