A Caribbean Heiress in Paris
A Caribbean Heiress in Paris by Adriana Herrera is $1.99! This is book one in the Las Leonas series. Shana and Claudia gave this one a B-:
We think readers who like their romances rooted in real history, who also appreciate hopeful historical stories that acknowledge the discrimination characters had to face, might like this. The pacing and the other issues we mentioned made this fall a bit short.
A fresh and vital new voice in romance. —Entertainment Weekly
Paris, 1889
The Exposition Universelle is underway, drawing merchants from every corner of the globe. Luz Alana Heith-Benzan set sail from Santo Domingo armed with three hundred casks of rum, her two best friends and one simple rule: under no circumstances is she to fall in love.
The City of Light is where Luz Alana will expand Caña Brava, the rum business her family built over three generations. It’s a mission that’s taken on new urgency after her father’s untimely death and the news that her trust fund won’t be released until she marries. But buyers and shippers alike are rude and dismissive; they can’t imagine doing business with a woman…never mind a woman of color.
From her first tempestuous meeting with James Evanston Sinclair, Earl of Darnick, Luz Alana is conflicted. Why is this man—this titled Scottish man—so determined to help her? And why, honestly, is he so infuriatingly charming?
All Evan Sinclair ever wanted was to find a purpose away from his father’s dirty money and dirtier politics. Ignoring his title, he’s built a whiskey brand that’s his biggest—and only—passion. That is, until he’s confronted with a Spanish-speaking force of nature who turns his life upside down.
Evan quickly suspects he’ll want Luz Alana with him forever. Every day with her makes the earl wish for more than her magnificent kisses or the marriage of convenience that might save them both. But Luz Alana sailed for Paris with her eyes on liquor, money and new beginnings. She wasn’t prepared for love to find her.

A Lot Like Adios
A Lot Like Adios by Alexis Daria is $1.99! This has a second chance romance and is the second in a series. I know illustrated covers can be divisive, but wowee these are gorgeous. Did you pick this one up on release? Have you read her previous ones?
Hi Mich. It’s Gabe.
After burning out in her corporate marketing career, Michelle Amato has built a thriving freelance business as a graphic designer. So what if her love life is nonexistent? She’s perfectly fine being the black sheep of her marriage-obsessed Puerto Rican-Italian family. Besides, the only guy who ever made her want happily-ever-after disappeared thirteen years ago.
It’s been a long time.
Gabriel Aguilar left the Bronx at eighteen to escape his parents’ demanding expectations, but it also meant saying goodbye to Michelle, his best friend and longtime crush. Now, he’s the successful co-owner of LA’s hottest celebrity gym, with an investor who insists on opening a New York City location. It’s the last place Gabe wants to go, but when Michelle is unexpectedly brought on board to spearhead the new marketing campaign, everything Gabe’s been running from catches up with him.
I’ve missed you.
Michelle is torn between holding Gabe at arm’s length or picking up right where they left off—in her bed. As they work on the campaign, old feelings resurface, and their reunion takes a sexy turn. Facing mounting pressure from their families—who think they’re dating—and growing uncertainty about their futures, can they resolve their past mistakes, or is it only a matter of time before Gabe says adiós again?

The Duke Gets Desperate
The Duke Gets Desperate by Diana Quincy is $1.99! This is book one in a series. There are renovation elements and enemies to lovers.
Diana Quincy returns with a steamy affair between an Arab-American woman who inherits a run-down castle in the English countryside and the duke who asserts the castle is his, in the first book in a brand-new Victorian historical romance series.
Anthony Cary, Duke of Strickland, inherits his spendthrift father’s title and can finally restore the family castle to its former glory. But at the reading of the will, Strick is stunned to learn that his father has secretly disentailed him, leaving the family manor–home to twelve generations of dukes–to Strick’s American stepmother. Everyone knows Strick detests the dowager duchess, and when she dies mysteriously, damning rumors start to surface.
When Raya Darwish unexpectedly inherits her glamorous late cousin’s castle in the English countryside, she clashes with the charismatic young duke who insists the castle is rightfully his. The estate is practically bankrupt, so she must find a way to work with the duke in order to save both of their futures.
The two cannot stand each other, but mutual disdain soon gives way to desire. When questions arise about how her cousin died, Raya cannot help wondering if Strick’s sudden unbridled passion for her is part of a scheme to get his castle back…

Funny Guy
Funny Guy by Emma Barry is $1.99 at Amazon! This is a childhood friends to lovers contemporary romance. It was also mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Have you read this one?
From the author of Chick Magnet comes a heartfelt friends-to-lovers story about what can happen when a funny guy and his childhood best friend are stuck together in a small New York City apartment.
Sam can’t escape the smash hit “Lost Boy” because, well, he is the lost boy. His pop-singer ex immortalized him in a song about his childish ways, and now his comedy career is on the line.
At least he still has Bree, his best friend and confidante. Bree has always been there for Sam, but she’s never revealed her biggest secret: she’s in love with him. To help herself move on, Bree applies for her dream job across the country―and doesn’t say a thing to Sam.
But as Sam tries to resuscitate his career, he turns to Bree for support―and maybe more. In the confines of her tiny apartment, they share a different dynamic. A charged dynamic. But she’s his friend. He can’t be falling for her.
Except he is.
Are his feelings for Bree just funny business? Or is their smoldering attraction the real deal?

Um, where’s the Pratchett?
Love Terry Pratchett but so reluctant to buy Kindle books knowing they are not really mine after purchase. I recently downloaded my many, many Kindle books before that option goes away. The modern world has so many wonderful things (ebooks are a lifesaver for my aging eyes) but so many frustrating things too. Just needed to vent, I guess.
@Jennifer: There’s a link to the list of Pratchett titles on sale at the top in the header body.
All the Terry Pratchett books are price-matched on Kobo , so you don’t have to give the big river any money AND you still get books written by one of the greatest writers of all time
Because of Amazon’s removing the ability to download the actual book file for eBooks (starting on Feb 26, I believe), I am examining my other options. I have heard good things about Kobo. Can anyone who uses Kobo tell me if it still lets you download the book file to your computer? Or, if anyone has other solutions, I would love to hear about them.
Thanks!
The Herrera is my pick here but I just really enjoy her work. The others are fun too, especially the Alexis Daria.
I didn’t know that about amazon removing the ability to download! what does that mean? and yes I would love options too–especially for an app on iPhone if possible!
@Laurel – I use Kobo and yes, you can still download your ebooks to a laptop or desktop. I just did one to test! They use the ePub format.
I’ve been buying from Kobo for years and I don’t have any complaints. I don’t own a kobo reader – I use their app on my phone and tablet.
That’s a new cover on “A Caribbean Heiress in Paris” — it used to have a photo cover.
@Laurel, @juhi – I recently made the switch to Kobo. You can download books from kobo.com, but it’s complicated to get them onto your Kobo if they are DRM’d. You have to download the book as an acsm file, which is secretly just a reference to the book. You open this acsm file in Adobe Digital Editions (ugh) on your computer, which then really downloads the actual epub. You then use ADE to transfer the book to your Kobo after you’ve plugged it into your computer. So it’s much more complicated than it is (currently) with Kindle!
If you want to get your already-purchased kindle ebooks onto your Kobo, you’ll need to act fast and download everything before February 26. I highly recommend this youtube explainer on how to do the conversion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcBirwJJycg. What I really like about the explainer is that it takes what is quite a complicated process and breaks down each step you need to do. But once you’ve got everything configured, converting the books goes pretty quickly.
I personally find that my brand new Kobo is a little buggy. For some reason, it just didn’t want to notice the side-loaded books. I had to get some technical help from Kobo.com. But now everything seems to be going pretty smoothly.
@Liz, I feel you. I have visual processing issues similar to dyslexia except caused by MS, and I’ve found other reading apps significantly less usable than Kindle.
Glad to see the Kobo-Walmart partnership is supposed to be ending soon! Just hope Kobo has good accessibility settings
Oop, meant to make my handle for that^ comment @Also Liz! Lol. Still getting an error message most of the time when I try to comment in safari (on iPhone), so switched to Ecosia but forgot that part
Oop, meant to make my handle @Other Liz for the above comment! Lol
I’ve read all 4 of these sale books and thought them all worth reading, but of them the one I enjoyed the most, though I didn’t expect to, was THE FUNNY GUY.
I use both a Kindle and Kobo. There are features I like about both, but both have some clunky bits to their interface. I like Kobo because I’m Canadian but I live in Seattle and remember when a guy from baby Amazon came into my writer’s workshop board meeting with this funky little thing he called an e-reader. I never thought I’d use one but here I am. My arms don’t ache when using an e-reader like it does with physical books.
Even less did I think so much of my reading would be through audiobooks! I guess I didn’t think about how I loved it when someone read to me.
And here I am, trying to download as many of the mumblety-thousand kindle books I own before they cut off the download feature.
UGH Amazon!! Not sure what this means for me going forward, but while I process…
A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik is only 1.99! This was one of my 5-star reads last year and I seriously cannot overstate how much I love the snarky anti-social badass that is El. SOO Good. And if you want to shuffle some of amazon’s profits to SBTB go through their link here:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083RZC8KQ/?tag=trashybooks-20
I just want to join everyone venting about the situation with Kindle. It’s been torture downloading all these ebooks before the deadline! It’s really a trust issue at this point. Like many romance fans here, I try to get good deals for ebooks but now I have this sizable library and it feels iffy after so much investment ($1.99 books adds up over time!). I also have a Kobo and feel like going forward that might be the way to go. At the very least I feel like I need to rethink my ebook purchasing. Maybe use the library more.
@book_reader_ea01sj71r4 does your Kobo not have a sync option? I have two Kobos and when buying from their website I’ve never had to manually transfer – all I have to do is turn my wifi on, sync it and the new ebooks are downloaded to my Kobo.
With ownership of ebooks, some of this is a publisher as well as a retailer issue. On Kobo’s book page, you can scroll down to the bottom to see what format the book is in where it says if it is DRM-protected or DRM-free. If it’s DRM-free you can buy, download from the site and then read it on anything, but that’s up to the publisher. I know Tor and some of the smaller publishing arms are pro-DRM-free, but I’m not sure any of the big publishers put their books out DRM-free.
If anyone is using an e-reader with a browser function and wants to sideload books without a cable there are a couple of websites you can use – I like send.djazz.se and it has an inbuilt kepub (the kobo epub version) conversion.
@Kir – my Kobo definitely does have the sync option over wifi. But I like to have a copy on my computer so I can manage my books with Calibre. I think I may have misinterpreted what @Laurel, @juhi were asking!
