  • The Undermining of Twyla and Frank

The Undermining of Twyla and Frank by Megan Bannen

The Undermining of Twyla and Frank by Megan Bannen is $2.99! This is book two in the Hart and Mercy series and we loved book one. This newest release came out over the summer. Did any of you pick this one up?

From the author of The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy comes a heartwarming fantasy with a best friends-to-lovers rom com twist set in the delightful demigod and donut-filled world of Tanria.

The entire town of Eternity was shocked when widowed, middle-aged Twyla Banneker partnered up with her neighbor and best friend, Frank Ellis, to join the Tanrian Marshals. Eight years later, Twyla’s rewarding career patrolling the strange land of Tanria remains a welcome change from the domestic grind of mom life, despite the misgivings of her grown children.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) a recent decrease in on-the-job peril has made Twyla and Frank’s job a lot safer … and a lot less exciting. So when they discover the body of one of their fellow marshals near an enormous footprint—and Frank finds himself the inadvertent foster dad to a baby dragon—they are grateful to be back in action.

Soon, the friends wind up ensnared in a nefarious plot that goes far deeper than any lucrative Tanrian mineshaft. But as danger closes in and Twyla and Frank’s investigation becomes more complicated, so does their easy friendship. And Twyla starts to realize that her true soul mate might be the person who has lived next door all along…

  • The Foxglove King

The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten

The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten is $2.99! I mentioned this one in a previous Hide Your Wallet. I did start reading it, but wound up putting it down pretty early. However, I think my short attention span lately is more of a me problem than a book problem.

When Lore was thirteen, she escaped a cult in the catacombs beneath the city of Dellaire. And in the ten years since, she’s lived by one rule: don’t let them find you. Easier said than done, when her death magic ties her to the city.

Mortem, the magic born from death, is a high-priced and illicit commodity in Dellaire, and Lore’s job running poisons keeps her in food, shelter, and relative security. But when a run goes wrong and Lore’s power is revealed, she’s taken by the Presque Mort, a group of warrior-monks sanctioned to use Mortem working for the Sainted King. Lore fully expects a pyre, but King August has a different plan. Entire villages on the outskirts of the country have been dying overnight, seemingly at random. Lore can either use her magic to find out what’s happening and who in the King’s court is responsible, or die.

Lore is thrust into the Sainted King’s glittering court, where no one can be believed and even fewer can be trusted. Guarded by Gabriel, a duke-turned-monk, and continually running up against Bastian, August’s ne’er-do-well heir, Lore tangles in politics, religion, and forbidden romance as she attempts to navigate a debauched and opulent society.

But the life she left behind in the catacombs is catching up with her. And even as Lore makes her way through the Sainted court above, they might be drawing closer than she thinks.

  • Stars Collide

    Stars Collide by Rachel Lacey

Stars Collide by Rachel Lacey is $2.49 at Amazon! This is a lesbian romance between two musicians and I’m inferring a bit of an age difference. I know the Bitchery has enjoyed Lacey’s books before.

Eden Sands has been a star for twenty years, but it’s lonely at the top. Her mediocre marriage just ended, and her inner circle is smaller than ever. The stage is the only place she’s ever felt like she truly belonged, and yet, her last album flopped, and her upcoming tour hasn’t sold out. Eden’s desperate for her star to shine bright again, but when her team suggests a collaboration with an up-and-coming young star to give her a boost, she balks.

Anna Moss is pop music’s rising star. She’s idolized Eden Sands for most of her life—so it’s a dream come true when she’s invited to perform with her at the Grammys. Anna’s tired of being defined by her bubbly persona. She wants to be taken seriously as an artist, and a duet with Eden could be just what she needs.

As Anna and Eden rehearse, they soon realize they have more in common than their musical talents. Now they just have to decide if what is between them is a one-hit wonder or the making of a romance worthy of one of the greatest love songs of all time.

  • Pet

    Pet by Akwaeke Emezi

Pet by Akwaeke Emezi is $1.99! I really liked this YA novel and its somewhat haunting surrealism. Please check reviews/triggers for this one. If memory serves, CSA plays a part of the narrative.

NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • STONEWALL BOOK AWARD WINNER • ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE’S 100 BEST YA BOOKS OF ALL TIME

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR by The New York Times • Time • Buzzfeed • NPR • New York Public Library • Publishers Weekly • School Library Journal

A genre-defying novel from the award-winning author NPR describes as “like [Madeline] L’Engle…glorious.” A singular book that explores themes of identity and justice. Pet is here to hunt a monster. Are you brave enough to look?

There are no monsters anymore, or so the children in the city of Lucille are taught. Jam and her best friend, Redemption, have grown up with this lesson all their life. But when Jam meets Pet, a creature made of horns and colors and claws, who emerges from one of her mother’s paintings and a drop of Jam’s blood, she must reconsider what she’s been told. Pet has come to hunt a monster, and the shadow of something grim lurks in Redemption’s house. Jam must fight not only to protect her best friend, but also to uncover the truth, and the answer to the question–How do you save the world from monsters if no one will admit they exist?

A riveting and timely young adult debut novel that asks difficult questions about what choices you can make when the society around you is in denial.

  1. Omphale says:

Much like The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy is pretty much the only telling of The Shop Around the Corner that I like, The Undermining of Frank and Twyla is one of the few Old Friends-to-Lovers that really works for me. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

  2. ReadKnitSnark says:

Amazon has a “Stock your Kindle with epic deals” selection today. So far, I have seen several books from series by:

If you are looking for a particular author and do not want to wade through fifty pages of books (I don’t blame you!), I suggest you search specifically for the authors and books you are interested in…

I’m another who quite enjoyed The Undermining of Frank and Twyla.

  7. Lisa L says:

I finished The Undermining of Twyla and Frank yesterday and it is *chef’s kiss. You do not have to have read The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy but characters do return and that is a wonderful book as well. I greatly enjoyed reading a romance between characters in their fifties who were both extremely competent but challenged by their feelings.

  8. flchen1 says:

    Free:
    – The Bones of Love: a marriage of convenience romance (A Last Responders Romance) by Megan Montgomery

    $2.49:
    – Headstrong (Vino and Veritas) by Eden Finley
    – In the Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros

  9. Betsydub says:

I don’t know if this is a miracle-come-down-from-on-high or some IT glitch, but at this moment, about 35(!) of Eloisa James’ ebooks are priced at $1.99 on bn.com. Titles from her first series, some novellas, and all the way through her many series to her last completed trilogy (“Would-Be Wallflowers” books 1 & 2).
I hope for the Bitchery that this bonanza remains @ that insane price for longer than the 28 minutes left in my (ET) day…

  10. Ely says:

A few deals that I saw today:

HEATED RIVALRY and THE LONG GAME by Rachel Reid are $2.99.

The 3-book Wild Hunt series by Elizabeth Chadwick is $4.97.

About half of the books from The Hollows series by Kim Harrison are $1.99 – starting with book 6 THE OUTLAW DEMON WAILS through to book 13, when she stopped writing the series for awhile. Maybe they’ve held up better than I remember?

THE BOOK OF THE DEAD (Agent Pendergast book 7) by Preston & Child is $1.99. Not a romance, but I thought it might be of interest for archaeology-action fans.

  11. Kolforin says:

Not romance, but STEERING THE CRAFT, Ursula K. Le Guin’s guide to writing, is on sale for $1.99.

As is THE LAST TALE OF THE FLOWER BRIDE by Roshani Chokshi, which has been mentioned here before (Inguess in a sale post since I don’t see a review).
