  • A Lady for a Duke

A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall

HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDA Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall is $1.99! Shana reviewed this one and gave it a Squee grade:

Many of the book’s themes are around friendship–loving a friend but hiding parts of yourself, learning to connect with other women, and the perils of competitive friendships. I loved A Lady for a Duke, it’s a must-read for historical romance fans looking for a new take on Regency friends-to-lovers.

When Viola Carroll was presumed dead at Waterloo she took the opportunity to live, at last, as herself. But freedom does not come without a price, and Viola paid for hers with the loss of her wealth, her title, and her closest companion, Justin de Vere, the Duke of Gracewood.

Only when their families reconnect, years after the war, does Viola learn how deep that loss truly was. Shattered without her, Gracewood has retreated so far into grief that Viola barely recognises her old friend in the lonely, brooding man he has become.

As Viola strives to bring Gracewood back to himself, fresh desires give new names to old feelings. Feelings that would have been impossible once and may be impossible still, but which Viola cannot deny. Even if they cost her everything, all over again.

  • Breaking Badger

    Breaking Badger by Shelly Laurenston

Breaking Badger by Shelly Laurenston is $3.99! This is book four in the Honey Badger Chronicles series. I believe this one heralded a new cover design for this series.

Fans of Thea Harrison and Nalini Singh won’t want to miss this exciting, funny, and sexy novel in the mega-popular series.

It’s instinct that drives Finn Malone to rescue a bunch of hard battling honey badgers. The Siberian tiger shifter just can’t bear to see his fellow shifters harmed. But no way can Finn have a houseful of honey badgers when he also has two brothers with no patience. Things just go from bad to worse when the badgers rudely ejected from his home turn out to be the only ones who can help him solve a family tragedy. He’s just not sure he can even get back into the badgers’ good graces. Since badgers lack graces of any kind . . .

Mads knows her teammates aren’t about to forgive the cats that were so rude to them, but moody Finn isn’t so bad. And he’s cute! The badger part of her understands Finn’s burning need to avenge his father’s death—after all, vengeance is her favorite pastime. So Mads sets about helping Finn settle his family’s score, which has its perks, since she gets to avoid her own family drama. Besides, fighting side by side with Finn is her kind of fun—especially when she can get in a hot and heavy snuggle with her very own growling, eye-rolling, and utterly irresistible kitty-cat . . .

Fake It Till You Bake It by Jamie Wesley

Fake It Till You Bake It by Jamie Wesley is $2.99! This is a contemporary romance with baking and fake dating. A second, standalone book in the series is out in November.

A reality star and a cupcake-baking football player pretend to be a couple in order to save his bakery in this sweet and sexy romance from Jamie Wesley, Fake It Till You Bake It…

Jada Townsend-Matthews is the most reviled woman in America after turning down a proposal on a reality dating show. When she comes home to lick her wounds, Jada finds herself working at San Diego’s newest cupcake bakery, Sugar Blitz, alongside the uptight owner and professional football player Donovan Dell.

When a reporter mistakenly believes Jada and Donovan are an item, they realize they can use the misunderstanding to their advantage to help the bakery and rehabilitate Jada’s image. Faking a relationship should be simple, but sometimes love is the most unexpected ingredient.

  • Broken

    Broken by Jenny Lawson

Broken by Jenny Lawson is $2.99! A couple of use here at SBTB have really loved Lawsons’ previous two memoir collections and this is her third, which came out this April. Humor can certainly be subjective. If you’re tempted by this one, but are unsure if her voice will work for you, she has a long-running blog: The Bloggess

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Furiously Happy and Let’s Pretend This Never Happened comes a deeply relatable book filled with humor and honesty about depression and anxiety.

As Jenny Lawson’s hundreds of thousands of fans know, she suffers from depression. In Broken, Jenny brings readers along on her mental and physical health journey, offering heartbreaking and hilarious anecdotes along the way.

With people experiencing anxiety and depression now more than ever, Jenny humanizes what we all face in an all-too-real way, reassuring us that we’re not alone and making us laugh while doing it. From the business ideas that she wants to pitch to Shark Tank to the reason why Jenny can never go back to the post office, Broken leaves nothing to the imagination in the most satisfying way. And of course, Jenny’s long-suffering husband Victor―the Ricky to Jenny’s Lucille Ball―is present throughout.

A treat for Jenny Lawson’s already existing fans, and destined to convert new ones, Broken is a beacon of hope and a wellspring of laughter when we all need it most.

I seem to be in the minority, but I really didn’t like A Lady for a Duke.

Here’s a bit of my 2 star GR review:

I wanted to like this m/f queer Regency romance but I really didn’t care for it. There is so much plot and yet the pacing was so uneven and I kept getting bored. I just didn’t care that much about the main characters or their relationship.

Alexis Hall is a very hit or miss author for me. I’m not sure exactly why this was such a miss for me. Part of it may be that it’s an homage to a style of historical romances that I used to read a lot of but apparently don’t miss or have the patience for now.

Part of it is that it features one of my very least favorite romance tropes / stock characters – the strong minded busy-body who knows what’s best for everyone and sets the plot in motion by interfering with the MC’s life. Blech. I don’t like this trope in general, and I’m realizing that it gets cringey if there’s a big difference in power / social standing between the two characters, in this case a cis woman trying to manage a trans woman’s life.

As a cis reader, I can’t really speak to the trans rep. But I will draw attention to a review of the first chapter by a trans reader on twitter.

“I was assured by so many reviewers and even by the author himself that Viola’s transness wasn’t going to be a point of conflict and it seems like that’s because Viola is just a total doormat and completely okay with people being casually transmisogynist towards her.”

Alison Goodman’s wonderful THE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY OF ILL-MANNERED LADIES is on sale for $1.99. Yes, I snapped it up even though I already own the audiobook.

  3. Alex says:

I was so tempted by the fake it til you bake it, but it’s £8.99 in the UK!

I just saw that Tessa Dare’s DO YOU WANT TO START A SCANDAL is $1.99 in Kindle; it’s my absolute favorite of hers for comfort rereading.

Also the most recent in Katee Robert’s Dark Olympus series, MIDNIGHT RUIN, is $2.24; I’ve enjoyed the series but haven’t caught up to this one yet (but still scooped it up because I’m a sucker for anything $2.99 and under…).

  5. MariaK says:

I liked, but didn’t love A LADY FOR A DUKE. The writing was great, nobody was stupid, nothing was drawn out too long, lots of character development, slow burn romance. But beyond the fresh premise, it was just a bit too cookie-cutter for me in pacing and plot, and there was a LOT of inner dialog. YMMV.

  6. Darlynne says:

Jenny Lawson is a queen. She has talked so much and openly about her mental health struggles, the world is a better place with her in it. Long may she shine.

I purchased BROKEN on last year’s Independent Bookstore day and was lucky enough to receive a set of cards she had made with quotes from the book. They are all favorites.

“Forgive yourself for being broken. For being you. For thinking those are things you need forgiveness for.”

“People say nice guys finish last, but I’m okay with finishing last. Because who wants to hang out with the assholes in the front?”

  7. kkw says:

There are several Alexis Hall books that I found unreadable, and a couple I actively loathe. Mostly tho I like his writing, and not infrequently love it. It seems like a lot of people feel this way but it’s endlessly fascinating to me the degree to which opinions vary about which is which.
His books are smart and funny and I can forgive a lot for smart and funny, up to and including the fact that he invariably makes me cry. This is one of my omg how did the universe know I needed this gift favorites. It’s not perfect -the pacing is indisputably uneven, as @cleo says. It just absolutely melted my ability to care about those kind of structural issues. I wanted to read about the main characters endlessly, don’t care what they get up to as long as they’re together.

@kkw – It is so fascinating! Alexis Hall has such a wide range – I never quite know what I’m going to get when I read one of his books but I know it’s going to well written and interesting, whether I want to put it on my keeper shelf or give it 0 stars.
