Cover Awe: Pinks, Purples, & Smiles

Happy New Year! Let’s kick things off with some pretty covers.

Queen of Dreams by Kit Rocha. A bluish purple background with a silvery spider web. Pieces of dew are caught on the strands. In the middle is a flaming scepter of sorts.

Cover design by Hang Le

Sarah: This is book 2 in the series that’s officially called Bound to Fire and Steel but is more colloquially known as “horny dragon book.”

Amanda: The colors are striking and the elements of fire give things an almost neon sign vibe.

Sarah: Agreed, the use of light and color makes it almost glow.

No Rings Attached by Mona Shroff. A photograph cover. A South Asian man and woman are standing close. He is wearing a v-neck white shirt. She is wearing a red and gold saree. A sheer red veil covers her hair. Her hand, which is decorated with henna and red and pearl bracelets, rests on his chest. Both figures are softly smiling.

Amanda: I love smiles! It also looks like he just told her a cute secret or paid her a quiet compliment.

Sarah: Yes! Quiet intimacy is very compelling and I imagine a challenge to capture.

This Spells Disaster by Tori Anne Martin. An illustrated cover with a pinkish purple background. Small hearts and stars dot the empty space. The middle has a heart shaped potion bottle. On the right side is an illustration of a woman with short brown hair. She has freckles and is wearing a dusty rose sweater with a brown jacket over it. On the left is a blonde woman with her hair in a braid, tossed over one shoulder. She's wearing a pink button down shirt with flowers. Both women are looking at each other over the bottle

Amanda: One of my favorite covers of last year!

Sarah: Reminds me of the Lana Harper covers. Gorgeous! Here for the witching.

Amanda: “Drink up, witches!”

Holly Horror by Michelle Jabes Corpora. The side profile of a skeleton wearing a bonnet. Behind it is a full pink moon. The bottom half of the figure turns into branches, revealing a dark forest on the bottom half of the cover. In the shape of the bonnet, which is a deep purple, is the image of a cabin surrounded by trees.

Sarah: Exquisite. No notes. Extremely creepy.

Amanda: I love an image within an image.

Sarah: YES. And how 80% of the shape is familiar and then OMG WTF.

Maya: Hell yes. Now I want a tattoo that is a skeleton in a bonnet.

Amanda: DO IT

Maya: I’ll add it to my list!

Susan: Oh that cover has LAYERS

When I was 12, my Halloween costume was a high-necked white blouse, blue gingham skirt and bonnet, and a full-head devil mask. I figured since it was my last year trick-or-treating, I’d go out in style.

Oh, I loved the first horny dragon book. Hadn’t heard that name for it but it is MUCH easier to remember (and more descriptive) than the official series title 🙂

  3. That last one harks back to the Holly Hobbie craze of the early 70’s in a very fitting way.

And the first one is just *chef’s kiss*

  4. That last one harks back to the Holly Hobbie craze of the early 70’s in a fittingly disturbing way.

And that first one is just (chef’s kiss). Anybody else notice the tiny ouroboros snake head coming out of that circle of fire?

So many beautiful colors on these covers!
