  • Libriomancer

    Libriomancer by Jim C. Hines

RECOMMENDED: Libriomancer by Jim C. Hines is $1.99! This urban fantasy novel combines things that a lot of us love: books and magic. Back when Carrie was a guest reviewer, she gave this book an A- grade and said it had a “fantastic concept.” Adam, Sarah’s husband, also says:

People who like fantasy in general will like this, but if you have any kind of literary nerd fandom, you will find Easter eggs in there.

Isaac Vainio is a Libriomancer, a member of the secret organization founded five centuries ago by Johannes Gutenberg. Libriomancers are gifted with the ability to magically reach into books and draw forth objects. When Isaac is attacked by vampires that leaked from the pages of books into our world, he barely manages to escape. To his horror he discovers that vampires have been attacking other magic-users as well, and Gutenberg has been kidnapped.

With the help of a motorcycle-riding dryad who packs a pair of oak cudgels, Isaac finds himself hunting the unknown dark power that has been manipulating humans and vampires alike. And his search will uncover dangerous secrets about Libriomancy, Gutenberg, and the history of magic. . . .

  • The Proposal

    The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory

The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory is $1.99! Speaking to other romance readers, I feel like a lot of those I know liked this one more than The Wedding Date. What do you think? Do you have a favorite Guillory romance?

From the author of The Wedding Date comes a new novel about the perils of public proposals and the beauty of an unexpected second chance.

When Nik Paterson went to the Dodgers game with her C-list actor boyfriend, Ford, for his birthday, she expected nothing more than a few boring hours with him and his bros. She certainly didn’t expect a Jumbotron proposal. Or her name to be misspelled. Or to go viral in minutes…

Carlos Ibarra wants to hang out with his sister, catch a Dodgers game, and relax for once. But when a camera crew descends on Nik after the disastrous proposal, he has to rescue her. After they flee the stadium, he delivers her into the arms of her supportive girlfriends, and they both think they’ll never see each other again.

Fate has other plans. Nik and Carlos keep crossing paths, accidentally and on purpose. When they finally give in to their attraction to each other, they are on the same page: sex and nothing more. But the proposed friends-with-benefits relationship is turning into something more, and the pair have to decide if they have room in their lives for love.

  • Pretty Little Lion

Pretty Little Lion by Suleikha Snyder

Pretty Little Lion by Suleikha Snyder is $1.99! This is the second book in the Third Shift series and was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. I remember the first book in the series, Big Bad Wolf, was pretty well-received. Are you a fan?

Never fall for your mark. It’s rule no. 1 of undercover work…and the rule Third Shift co-founder Elijah Richter breaks the moment he sees Meghna Saxena-Saunders across the room at an arms dealer’s VIP party.

Lion shifter and Third Shift operative Elijah Richter has an easy but vital mission: seduce arms dealer Emeric Aston’s gorgeous girlfriend, use her as an entry point to the organization, and find out what the global terrorist is planning.

Unfortunately, he doesn’t know that Meghna Saxena-Saunders is no ordinary celebrity influencer. She’s trained as an assassin and spy, and she has her own reasons for cozying up to Aston. She immediately clocks the mysterious stranger watching her at a VIP party and the two fall into their lusty bed of lies. When their morning-after is interrupted by one of Aston’s goons, both of their missions are thrown into jeopardy. Now Meghna must team with Third Shift to cover her tracks and discover the truth before it’s too late.

  • Lord of the Last Heartbeat

Lord of the Last Heartbeat by May Peterson

Lord of the Last Heartbeat by May Peterson is $1.99! This is book one in the Sacred Dark fantasy romance series. I believe this series and the most recent book The Calyx Charm have been recommended a few times on the site. Have you read this one?

    Stop me. Please.

Three words scrawled in bloodred wine. A note furtively passed into the hand of a handsome stranger. Only death can free Mio from his mother’s political schemes. He’s put his trust in the enigmatic Rhodry—an immortal moon soul with the power of the bear spirit—to put an end to it all.

But Rhodry cannot bring himself to kill Mio, whose spellbinding voice has the power to expose secrets from the darkest recesses of the heart and mind. Nor can he deny his attraction to the fair young sorcerer. So he spirits Mio away to his home, the only place he can keep him safe—if the curse that besieges the estate doesn’t destroy them both first.

In a world teeming with mages, ghosts and dark secrets, love blooms between the unlikely pair. But if they are to be strong enough to overcome the evil that draws ever nearer, Mio and Rhodry must first accept a happiness neither ever expected to find.

THIRD SHIFT has the *best* shifter covers I’ve ever seen.

Somehow I forgot to add the name of the artist: it’s Kris Keller.

I haven’t quite finished my dive into Jasmine Guillory’s backlist, but I will say I do like The Proposal quite a lot. There is something about how we know as the observer how good the MCs are for each other, but they aren’t ready to know it yet, and Guillory gives them the time they need without high angst that just hits the right spot for me.

A MEMORY CALLED EMPIRE by Arkady Martine is $2.99 – this is not a romance per se, but includes an f/f romance. I don’t alway pay attention to the Hugos (unless its T. Kingfisher or Jo Walton, ha), and I was a little busy when these books came out and was strictly reading comfort reads, so I kind of missed the boat on them. Then I was recently rereading Vivan Shaw’s Greta Helsing series and then went to her website & was poking around to see what else she had, read on her About Me page that she was married to Arkady Martine and… thats how I learned about Martine’s books. That… might say a lot about me. Anywho here it is (apparently Martine was on an SBTB podcast I should listen to…):

I’ve read four of Jasmine Guillory’s books and by far the best is WHILE WE WERE DATING. The dialogue really sparkles and the characters are just great. (I really did not like THE PROPOSAL at all.)

  7. Jean Lamb says:

I loved Libriomancer. I keep wondering if you can pull characters out of a book if you have a largish tablet and the character involved is small or can somehow squeeze through. I suspect pulling Miles Vorkosigan into your problem might not be the best idea, though.

  8. chacha1 says:

    I also loved Libriomancer. 🙂

  9. Ms. M says:

I quite enjoyed Lord of the Last Heartbeat. It had a lot of drama (I liked how the dead wife subplot had some surprises) and a sort of Beauty and the Beast/Jane Eyre fantasy vibe.
