  • Thank You for Listening

Thank You for Listening by Julia Whelan

Thank You for Listening by Julia Whelan is $1.99! Sarah mentioned this on Hide Your Wallet and was interested in the meta-ness of it. She also had Whelan on the podcast!

From the author of My Oxford Year, Julia Whelan’s uplifting novel tells the story of a former actress turned successful audiobook narrator—who has lost sight of her dreams after a tragic accident—and her journey of self-discovery, love, and acceptance when she agrees to narrate one last romance novel.

For Sewanee Chester, being an audiobook narrator is a long way from her old dreams, but the days of being a star on film sets are long behind her. She’s found success and satisfaction from the inside of a sound booth and it allows her to care for her beloved, ailing grandmother. When she arrives in Las Vegas last-minute for a book convention, Sewanee unexpectedly spends a whirlwind night with a charming stranger.

On her return home, Sewanee discovers one of the world’s most beloved romance novelists wanted her to perform her last book—with Brock McNight, the industry’s hottest, most secretive voice. Sewanee doesn’t buy what romance novels are selling—not after her own dreams were tragically cut short—and she stopped narrating them years ago. But her admiration of the late author, and the opportunity to get her grandmother more help, makes her decision for her.

As Sewanee begins work on the book, resurrecting her old romance pseudonym, she and Brock forge a real connection, hidden behind the comfort of anonymity. Soon, she is dreaming again, but secrets are revealed, and the realities of life come crashing down around her once more.

If she can learn to risk everything for desires she has long buried, she will discover a world of intimacy and acceptance she never believed would be hers.

  • The Accidental Pinup

The Accidental Pinup by Danielle Jackson

The Accidental Pinup by Danielle Jackson is $1.99! I believe we’ve talked about Jackon’s beautiful covers before. This one features a photographer heroine who inadvertently becomes a model.

Rival photographers are forced to collaborate on a body-positive lingerie campaign, but they might have to readjust their focus when sparks fly.

Photographer Cassie Harris loves her job—her company Buxom Boudoir makes people look beautiful and feel empowered with her modern twist on classic pinup photography. Cassie’s best friend, Dana, is about to launch her own dangerously dreamy lingerie line and wants Cassie to shoot and direct the career-changing national campaign. But company politics and Dana’s complicated pregnancy interfere, and Cassie finds herself—a proud plus size Black woman—not behind the camera but in front of it.

Though she’s never modeled herself, Cassie’s pretty sure she can handle the sheer underwear and caution tape bralettes. She’s not sure she can work so intimately with the chosen photographer, her long-time competitor in the Chicago photography scene, Reid Montgomery. Their chemistry is undeniable on set, however, and feelings can develop faster than film…

  • And They Lived Happily Ever After

And They Lived Happily Ever After by Therese Beharrie

And They Lived Happily Ever After by Therese Beharrie is $1.99! I’d say this is a contemporary romance with some light, fantastical elements, rather than being a full-fledged contemporary fantasy. Have you read this one?

From acclaimed South African author Therese Beharrie, this #OwnVoices rom-com about a romance novelist with a touch of magic is loaded with heart, heat, and smart, sexy banter, while also addressing timely, weighty issues around the foster care system, mental health, and the power of creativity.

In this sparkling new novel, acclaimed author Therese Beharrie delivers a delightfully magical romantic comedy about a woman literally living her dreams—and conjuring a real-life hero . . .

    One unexpected kiss . . .
Successful romance author Gaia Anders has a secret: anything she dreams at night is magically written into her bestselling novels. After a lonely childhood in foster care, her dream life is the only one she trusts. Gaia’s waking life just can’t compare—until she gets caught in one utterly surprising, crazy-passionate, real-life kiss . . .

    One near-perfect guy . . .
Workaholic businessman Jacob Scott has had a crush on his brother’s best friend, Gaia, since forever—but he never expected to literally share her dreams. Living out their magical nighttime fantasies is explosive, but it’s their waking desire turning his single-minded ways upside down. It’s making him want a future he didn’t think was possible . . .

One dream that could come true . . .
But Gaia has secrets from her past she won’t reveal. And Jacob’s attempts to keep the peace in his own fractured family puts him up against her deepest fears. Soon, they’re facing hard truths about who they are and what they’re running from. And the only way to break this curse is realizing true love’s real-life power . . .

  • You Deserve Each Other

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle is $1.99! This contemporary romance was featured in a previous Hide Your Wallet by both Aarya and Catherine. I’ve heard good things about this one from fellow romance readers, though some did find the barbs the leads throw at one another to be particularly mean at times.

When your nemesis also happens to be your fiancé, happily ever after becomes a lot more complicated in this wickedly funny, lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy debut.

Naomi Westfield has the perfect fiancé: Nicholas Rose holds doors open for her, remembers her restaurant orders, and comes from the kind of upstanding society family any bride would love to be a part of. They never fight. They’re preparing for their lavish wedding that’s three months away. And she is miserably and utterly sick of him.

Naomi wants out, but there’s a catch: whoever ends the engagement will have to foot the nonrefundable wedding bill. When Naomi discovers that Nicholas, too, has been feigning contentment, the two of them go head-to-head in a battle of pranks, sabotage, and all-out emotional warfare.

But with the countdown looming to the wedding that may or may not come to pass, Naomi finds her resolve slipping. Because now that they have nothing to lose, they’re finally being themselves–and having fun with the last person they expect: each other.

  4. SusanS says:

CW for Thank You For Listening: FMC’s beloved grandmother has Alzheimer’s disease and gets progressively worse as the story progresses. This is a major part of the plot that the blurb and cute cover completely ignore.

  5. Lauren says:

I absolutely love second chance romances, but I must pass on You Deserve Each Other. I’ve broken off an engagement, surrendered deposits, done the tough work of reevaluating my life and relationship and insisting my partner do the same, months of couples counseling, and eventual reconciliation followed by a wedding that did not remotely resemble the first one we had planned. I just have trouble coupling that long and emotionally frought process with hijinks. It sounds like a juvenile way to handle a very significant life change. Of course, that’s just my personal experience and maybe the author really pulls it off.

  6. WS says:

Thanks, SusanS. I’ll be skipping that one. Still traumatized by my mother’s decline and death.

  7. Emily B says:

So the thing with Hogle, and this either works for you or it doesn’t, is she writes characters that are deeply weird. Not in a slapstick, wacky zany kind of way, a la Pippa Grant, but just true oddballs who are experiencing a bit of rut or arrested development. It took me a bit to get into You Deserve Each Other, but I ultimately enjoyed it by the end. Her subsequent books I’ve enjoyed from the jump. Just Like Magic, her holiday themed book from last year, is a true delight.

Thank You for Listening was the right book at exactly the right moment for me. I had just ventured into audiobooks after assuming for years they weren’t for me. Thank You for Listening is set in the world of audiobooks, richly detailed by talented author/narrator Julia Whelan. It’s authentically detailed about the process of interpreting written works for audio, and about the industry itself. I discovered the pleasure of switching between written and spoken story unfolding.

I delighted in a moment in the story when the lead character is asked by a fan at an audiobook convention who her co-narrator was in an adventure novel. She explains she did both parts. He doesn’t believe her, cannot believe her. Such is the skill of fine voice actors. I loved Whelan before as a narrator. After Thank you for listening, I love her as an author too.

Thanks to Kareni for the free book list. I found Grumpy Fake Boyfriend by Jackie Lau. It’s been recommended here a few times.
FYI, it was listed in the Steamy Contemporary Romance category, and also near the end under Written by Authors of Colour.
