  • Girly Drinks

    Girly Drinks by Mallory O'Meara

Girly Drinks by Malloy O’Meara is $2.99! I mentioned this on a previous Book Beat because it sounds like right up the Bitchery’s alley. If you like niche non-fiction or loved Amy Stewart’s The Drunken Botanist, maybe try this one.

“At last, the feminist history of booze we’ve been waiting for!” —Amy Stewart, author of The Drunken Botanist

From Los Angeles Times bestselling author Mallory O’Meara comes a lively and engrossing feminist history of women drinking through the ages

Strawberry daiquiris. Skinny martinis. Vodka sodas with lime. These are the cocktails that come in sleek-stemmed glasses, bright colors and fruity flavors—these are the Girly Drinks.

From the earliest days of civilization, alcohol has been at the center of social rituals and cultures worldwide. But when exactly did drinking become a gendered act? And why have bars long been considered “places for men” when, without women, they might not even exist?

With whip-smart insight and boundless curiosity, Girly Drinks unveils an entire untold history of the female distillers, drinkers and brewers who have played a vital role in the creation and consumption of alcohol, from ancient Sumerian beer goddess Ninkasi to iconic 1920s bartender Ada Coleman. Filling a crucial gap in culinary history, O’Meara dismantles the long-standing patriarchal traditions at the heart of these very drinking cultures, in the hope that readers everywhere can look to each celebrated woman in this book—and proudly have what she’s having.

  • On Rotation

    On Rotation by Shirlene Obuobi

On Rotation by Shirlene Obuobi is $1.99! I mentioned this one in a previous Get Rec’d. I’d say this is more women’s fiction or novel with romantic elements, as it has much more of a focus on the main character figuring out a potential new path in life.

Ghanaian-American Angela Appiah has checked off all the boxes for the “Perfect Immigrant Daughter.”

Enroll in an elite medical school. Snag a suitable lawyer/doctor/engineer boyfriendSurround self with a gaggle of successful and/or loyal friends. But then it quickly all falls apart: her boyfriend dumps her, she bombs the most important exam of her medical career, and her best friend pulls away. And her parents, whose approval seems to hinge on how closely she follows the path they chose, are a lot less proud of their daughter. It’s a quarter life crisis of epic proportions.

Angie, who has always faced her problems by working “twice as hard to get half as far,” is at a loss. Suddenly, she begins to question everything: her career choice, her friendships, even why she’s attracted to men who don’t love her as much as she loves them.

And just when things couldn’t get more complicated, enter Ricky Gutierrez– brilliant, thoughtful, sexy, and most importantly, seems to see Angie for who she is instead of what she can represent.

Unfortunately, he’s also got “wasteman” practically tattooed across his forehead, and Angie’s done chasing mirages of men. Or so she thinks. For someone who’s always been in control, Angie realizes that there’s one thing she can’t plan on: matters of her heart.

  • Once Upon a K-Prom

Once Upon a K-Prom by Kat Cho

Once Upon a K-Prom by Kat Cho is $2.19 at Amazon and $2.99 elsewhere! This is another Get Rec’d mention for anyone on a k-pop or k-drama kick! This is definitely YA and not a contemporary adult romance.

What would you do if the world’s biggest K-pop star asked you to prom? Perfect for fans of Jenny Han and Sandhya Menon, this hilarious and heartfelt novel brings the glamour and drama of the K-pop world straight to high school.

Elena Soo has always felt overshadowed. Whether by her more successful older sisters, her more popular twin brother, or her more outgoing best friend, everyone except Elena seems to know exactly who they are and what they want. But she is certain about one thing – she has no interest in going to prom. While the rest of the school is giddy over corsages and dresses, Elena would rather spend her time working to save the local community center, the one place that’s always made her feel like she belonged.

So when international K-pop superstar Robbie Choi shows up at her house to ask her to prom, Elena is more confused than ever. Because the one person who always accepted Elena as she is? Her childhood best friend, Robbie Choi. And the one thing she maybe, possibly, secretly wants more than anything? For the two of them to keep the promise they made each other as kids: to go to prom together. But that was seven years ago, and with this new K-pop persona, pink hair, and stylish clothes, Robbie is nothing like the sweet, goofy boy she remembers. The boy she shared all her secrets with. The boy she used to love.

Besides, prom with a guy who comes with hordes of screaming fans, online haters, and relentless paparazzi is the last thing Elena wants – even if she can’t stop thinking about Robbie’s smile…right?

  • Dating Dr. Dil

Dating Dr. Dil by Nisha Sharma

Dating Dr. Dil by Nisha Sharma is $1.99! I know, another doctor-themed book in today’s sales! I could have sworn I saw this one mention some Jane Austen-inspiration in marketing materials, but I’m perhaps I’ve imagined that.

Nisha Sharma’s hilarious new romantic comedy inspired by Taming of the Shrew features a love-phobic TV doctor who must convince a love-obsessed homebody they are destined to be together.

Kareena Mann dreams of having a love story like her parents, but she prefers restoring her classic car to swiping right on dating apps. When her father announces he’s selling her mother’s home, Kareena makes a deal with him: he’ll gift her the house if she can get engaged in four months. Her search for her soulmate becomes impossible when her argument with Dr. Prem Verma, host of The Dr. Dil Show, goes viral. Now the only man in her life is the one she doesn’t want.

Dr. Prem Verma is dedicated to building a local community health center, but he needs to get donors with deep pockets. The Dr. Dil Show was doing just that, until his argument with Kareena went viral, and he’s left short changed. That’s when Kareena’s meddling aunties presented him with a solution: convince Kareena he’s her soulmate and they’ll fund his clinic.

Even though they have conflicting views on love-matches and arranged-matches, the more time Prem spends with Kareena, the more he begins to believe she’s the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with. But for Prem and Kareena to find their happily ever after, they must admit that hate has turned into fate.

  1. Jen says:

Dating Dr. Dil is a polarizing one. I know a lot of people really enjoyed it but frankly I despised it with every fiber of my being. The love interest made me angry to the point of tears, to put a long rant very short. Def read reviews before buying.

  2. Lisa F says:

Like Jen, DDD is super polarizing. I too hated it, it was an awful, awful read for me. Hated most of the characters, the story, the romance.

Want to read On Rotation, liked OUAKP.

  3. I enjoyed ON ROTATION very much, especially her “ride or die” friends. Excellent portrayal of the immigrant daughter experience, and a very satisfying slow burn romance.

  8. Musical Trees says:

    @flchen1 I loved THE STAND-IN! Highly recommend.

I want to give one vote in favor of DATING DR. DIL, which seemed to be a loose retelling of The Taming of the Shrew. I adored the quote-un-quote shrew, Kareema. The Aunties were something else.

  9. Susan says:

Here’s a second vote for DDD. Taming of the Shrew Indian style. I enjoyed it (trying not to look ashamed)

Two books or series mentioned here:

Dr.Mistake by J.Saman – Billionaire doctor series It sounds ridiculous but I’m going for it.

Rise by Karina Bliss – A rock band series.

    Both are .99 on Amazon.

  10. flchen1 says:

    FREE:
The Lie : a bad boy sports romance (The Wolves: A football dynasty Book 1) by Karla Sorensen (I believe @DiscoDollyDeb has recommended Karla Sorensen’s Ward Sisters series before)
