  • Some of It Was Real

Some of It Was Real by Nan Fischer

Some of It Was Real by Nan Fischer is $1.99! I mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet. I was definitely curious about the medium character. Did any of you pick this one up?

A psychic on the verge of stardom who isn’t sure she believes in herself and a cynical journalist with one last chance at redemption are brought together by secrets from the past that also threaten to tear them apart.

Psychic-medium Sylvie Young starts every show with her origin story, telling the audience how she discovered her abilities. But she leaves out a lot—the plane crash that killed her parents, an estranged adoptive family who tend orchards in rainy Oregon, panic attacks, and the fact that her agent insists she research some clients to ensure success.

After a catastrophic reporting error, Thomas Holmes’s next story at the L.A. Times may be his last, but he’s got a great personal pitch. “Grief vampires” like Sylvie who prey upon the loved ones of the deceased have bankrupted his mother. He’s dead set on using his last-chance article to expose Sylvie as a conniving fraud and resurrect his career.

When Sylvie and Thomas collide, a game of cat and mouse ensues, but the secrets they’re keeping from each other are nothing compared to the mysteries and lies they unearth about Sylvie’s past. Searching for the truth might destroy them both—but it’s the only way to find out what’s real.

  • The Year of the Witching

The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson

RECOMMENDED: The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson is $1.99! I hosted a Women in Horror panel with Alexis as one of the authors and it was amazing! Ellen gave this one an A-:

The Year of the Witching is a very, very good book. It’s unsettling and horrifying, beautiful and incisive, and ultimately, radiantly triumphant.

    The Handmaid’s Tale for a new generation . . .

In the lands of Bethel, where the Prophet’s word is law, Immanuelle Moore’s very existence is blasphemy.

The daughter of a union with an outsider that cast her once-proud family into disgrace, Immanuelle does her best to worship the Father, follow Holy Protocol and lead a life of submission, devotion and absolute conformity, like all the women in the settlement.

But a chance mishap lures her into the forbidden Darkwood that surrounds Bethel – a place where the first prophet once pursued and killed four powerful witches. Their spirits are still walking there, and they bestow a gift on Immanuelle: the diary of her dead mother, who Immanuelle is shocked to learn once sought sanctuary in the wood.

Fascinated by secrets in the diary, Immanuelle finds herself struggling to understand how her mother could have consorted with the witches. But when she begins to learn grim truths about the Church and its history, she realises the true threat to Bethel is its own darkness. And if Bethel is to change, it must begin with her . . .

  • The Dating Plan

The Dating Plan by Sara Desai

The Dating Plan by Sara Desai is $2.99! This is a contemporary romance that came out a little over a year ago and has a fake relationship. I’ve loved how colorful all of Desai’s covers have been. Have you read this one?

Daisy Patel is a software engineer who understands lists and logic better than bosses and boyfriends. With her life all planned out, and no interest in love, the one thing she can’t give her family is the marriage they expect. Left with few options, she asks her childhood crush to be her decoy fiance.

Liam Murphy is a venture capitalist with something to prove. When he learns that his inheritance is contingent on being married, he realizes his best friend’s little sister has the perfect solution to his problem. A marriage of convenience will get Daisy’s matchmaking relatives off her back and fulfill the terms of his late grandfather’s will. If only he hadn’t broken her tender teenage heart nine years ago…

Sparks fly when Daisy and Liam go on a series of dates to legitimize their fake relationship. Too late, they realize that very little is convenient about their arrangement. History and chemistry aren’t about to follow the rules of this engagement.

  • A Brother’s Honor

A Brother’s Honor by Brenda Jackson

A Brother’s Honor by Brenda Jackson is $1.99! This is the first book in the Grangers series. This one has a hint of a workplace romance as the hero hires the heroine (a business consultant) to help with a failing business.

The Granger brothers left behind their family’s Virginia estate-and the bad memories it holds-years ago. But their dying grandfather’s request brings them home:to a failing business, a legacy of secrets and a deathbed promise to make things right.

As the eldest brother, attorney Jace Granger is determined to take responsibility for Granger Aeronautics, his family’s failing business. But the years of mismanagement seem impossible to untangle. As CEO, he hires a consultant to turn the company around. Smart, sexy Shana Bradford is the right person for the job-and the right woman to turn Jace’s world upside down.

But the passion between them is jeopardized when old secrets begin to emerge. A woman from Jace’s past suddenly reappears. And an explosive discovery changes everything Jace thinks he knows about his mother-and his father, who was convicted of her murder.

Jace Granger tried to leave his family history behind once before. But this time he needs to face the past…or risk losing his future.

Three brothers. One legacy. A lifetime of secrets.

  1. JoanneBB says:

The Dating Plan is really good. I know some reviews said it’s predictable but there’s just enough moving pieces to keep the reader’s interest. And I really liked the main characters.

  2. Jen says:

I’ve tried so hard to like Sara Desai’s books, but I just don’t. The Dating Plan in particular really didn’t work for me. I found the writing cringe and the whole plot a mess. I know people enjoyed that book (like the commenter above me!) but I’m genuinely at a loss as to why. And I’ll never get over when they paused for “halftime” at a hockey game.
