  • One to Watch

One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London

One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London is $1.99! This has been mentioned a couple times on the site in things like Hide Your Wallet and podcast episodes. I feel like I’ve heard mixed things about this one, but do take note that the heroine’s weight seems to play a big factor in the narrative.

    Real love…as seen on TV

Bea Schumacher is a devastatingly stylish plus-size fashion blogger who has amazing friends, a devoted family, legions of Insta followers–and a massively broken heart. Like the rest of America, Bea indulges in her weekly obsession: the hit reality show Main Squeeze. The fantasy dates! The kiss-off rejections! The surprising amount of guys named Chad! But Bea is sick and tired of the lack of body diversity on the show. Since when is being a size zero a prerequisite for getting engaged on television?

Just when Bea has sworn off dating altogether, she gets an intriguing call: Main Squeeze wants her to be its next star, surrounded by men vying for her affections. Bea agrees, on one condition–under no circumstances will she actually fall in love. She’s in this to supercharge her career, subvert harmful anti-fat beauty standards, inspire women across America, and get a free hot air balloon ride. That’s it.

But when the cameras start rolling, Bea realizes things are more complicated than she anticipated. She’s in a whirlwind of sumptuous couture, Internet culture wars, sexy suitors, and an opportunity (or two, or five) to find messy, real-life love in the midst of a made-for-TV fairy tale. In this joyful, razor-sharp debut, Bea has to decide whether it might just be worth trusting these men–and herself–for a chance to live happily ever after.

  • The Bookish Life of Nina Hill

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman is $1.99! Several of us were excited for this one because we’re all suckers for bookishness and bookstores. However, this falls more toward women’s fiction than a contemporary romance. Have you read this one?

The only child of a single mother, Nina has her life just as she wants it: a job in a bookstore, a kick-butt trivia team, a world-class planner and a cat named Phil. If she sometimes suspects there might be more to life than reading, she just shrugs and picks up a new book.

When the father Nina never knew existed suddenly dies, leaving behind innumerable sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews, Nina is horrified. They all live close by! They’re all—or mostly all—excited to meet her! She’ll have to Speak. To. Strangers. It’s a disaster! And as if that wasn’t enough, Tom, her trivia nemesis, has turned out to be cute, funny, and deeply interested in getting to know her. Doesn’t he realize what a terrible idea that is?

    Nina considers her options.

    1. Completely change her name and appearance. (Too drastic, plus she likes her hair.)
    2. Flee to a deserted island. (Hard pass, see: coffee).
    3. Hide in a corner of her apartment and rock back and forth. (Already doing it.)

It’s time for Nina to come out of her comfortable shell, but she isn’t convinced real life could ever live up to fiction. It’s going to take a brand-new family, a persistent suitor, and the combined effects of ice cream and trivia to make her turn her own fresh page.

  • The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley is $1.99! This is book one in the Flavia de Luce series, which I remember this being pretty popular for a while. Last time this was on sale, many of you mentioned it’s great on audio and is a comfort read for you.

Fans of Louise Fitzhugh’s iconic Harriet the Spy will welcome 11-year-old sleuth Flavia de Luce, the heroine of Canadian journalist Bradley’s rollicking debut. In an early 1950s English village, Flavia is preoccupied with retaliating against her lofty older sisters when a rude, redheaded stranger arrives to confront her eccentric father, a philatelic devotee. Equally adept at quoting 18th-century works, listening at keyholes and picking locks, Flavia learns that her father, Colonel de Luce, may be involved in the suicide of his long-ago schoolmaster and the theft of a priceless stamp. The sudden expiration of the stranger in a cucumber bed, wacky village characters with ties to the schoolmaster, and a sharp inspector with doubts about the colonel and his enterprising young detective daughter mean complications for Flavia and enormous fun for the reader. Tantalizing hints about a gardener with a shady past and the mysterious death of Flavia’s adventurous mother promise further intrigues ahead.

  • The Rose Garden

The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley

The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! The heroine returns to her childhood summer home in Cornwall to scatter her sister’s ashes and finds a portal to the 18th century in the rose garden, and there’s a pretty hot dude back there, too. In time, I mean, and also in the rose garden.

“Whatever time we have,” he said, “it will be time enough.”

Eva Ward returns to the only place she truly belongs, the old house on the Cornish coast, seeking happiness in memories of childhood summers. There she finds mysterious voices and hidden pathways that sweep her not only into the past, but also into the arms of a man who is not of her time.

But Eva must confront her own ghosts, as well as those of long ago. As she begins to question her place in the present, she comes to realize that she too must decide where she really belongs.

From Susanna Kearsley, author of the New York Times bestseller The Winter Sea and a voice acclaimed by fans of Gabaldon, du Maurier, and Niffenegger alike, The Rose Garden is a haunting exploration of love, family, the true meaning of home, and the ties that bind us together.

I love the Flavia de Luce mysteries! They’ve recently announced a few more books in the series and a film adaptation (with Martin Freeman and Jonathan Pryce among others) so I’d expect some promos/deals as all that rolls out.

  2. Lolagranola says:

I adore Abi Waxman’s books – the series this book is part of is a lovely, sweet hearted read.

  3. Susanna says:

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is fun, but I’d agree it was more women’s fiction than romance, though there is a romance element.

Forever Your Rogue by Erin Langston is $1.99. Today only.

  5. Maureen says:

I’m a huge fan of Abbi Waxman and The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is a favorite. I adored the first at least 3 of the Flavia de Luce books, but then I read one I wasn’t crazy about. Need to give that one another try, because for a while it was my favorite mystery series.
