  • Funny You Should Ask

Funny You Should Ask by Elissa Sussman

Funny You Should Ask by Elissa Sussman is $2.99! This one has been recommended on several podcasts we’ve done with other romance authors. I remember this being shelved as fiction in some bookstores, so I’ve also been hesitant to pick it up as a romance. Any thoughts?

Then. Twenty-something writer Chani Horowitz is stuck. While her former MFA classmates are nabbing high-profile book deals, all she does is churn out puff pieces. Then she’s hired to write a profile of movie star Gabe Parker: her number one celebrity crush and the latest James Bond. All Chani wants to do is keep her cool and nail the piece. But what comes next proves to be life changing in ways she never saw coming, as the interview turns into a whirlwind weekend that has the tabloids buzzing—and Chani getting closer to Gabe than she had planned.

Now. Ten years later, after a brutal divorce and a healthy dose of therapy, Chani is back in Los Angeles as a successful writer with the career of her dreams. Except that no matter what new essay collection or online editorial she’s promoting, someone always asks about The Profile. It always comes back to Gabe. So when his PR team requests that they reunite for a second interview, she wants to say no. She wants to pretend that she’s forgotten about the time they spent together. But the truth is that Chani wants to know if those seventy-two hours were as memorable to Gabe as they were to her. And so . . . she says yes.

Alternating between their first meeting and their reunion a decade later, this deliciously irresistible novel will have you hanging on until the last word.

  • Wild and Wicked Things

Wild and Wicked Things by Francesca May

Wild and Wicked Things by Francesca May is $1.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! Sarah mentioned in on a Hide Your Wallet and we’re all very curious about this historical fantasy with potentially dark, witchy lesbians. Carrie gave this one a C+ and take care to check the content warnings.

In the aftermath of World War I, a naive woman is swept into a glittering world filled with dark magic, romance, and murder in this lush and decadent debut.

On Crow Island, people whisper, real magic lurks just below the surface.

Neither real magic nor faux magic interests Annie Mason. Not after it stole her future. She’s only on the island to settle her late father’s estate and, hopefully, reconnect with her long-absent best friend, Beatrice, who fled their dreary lives for a more glamorous one.

Yet Crow Island is brimming with temptation, and the biggest one may be her enigmatic new neighbor.

Mysterious and alluring, Emmeline Delacroix is a figure shadowed by rumors of witchcraft. And when Annie witnesses a confrontation between Bea and Emmeline at one of the island’s extravagant parties, she is drawn into a glittering, haunted world. A world where the boundaries of wickedness are tested, and the cost of illicit magic might be death.

  • These Hollow Vows

These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan

These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan is $2.99! This is a YA fantasy with romantic elements and fae! I believe this one skews older YA in terms of sexual content. This one is high on my TBR pile but still haven’t gotten around to reading it.

From New York Times best-selling author Lexi Ryan, Cruel Prince meets A Court of Thorns and Roses in this sexy, action-packed fantasy about a girl who is caught between two treacherous faerie courts and their dangerously seductive princes.

Brie hates the Fae and refuses to have anything to do with them, even if that means starving on the street. But when her sister is sold to the sadistic king of the Unseelie court to pay a debt, she’ll do whatever it takes to get her back—including making a deal with the king himself to steal three magical relics from the Seelie court.

Gaining unfettered access to the Seelie court is easier said than done. Brie’s only choice is to pose as a potential bride for Prince Ronan, and she soon finds herself falling for him. Unwilling to let her heart distract her, she accepts help from a band of Unseelie misfits with their own secret agenda. As Brie spends time with their mysterious leader, Finn, she struggles to resist his seductive charm.

Caught between two dangerous courts, Brie must decide who to trust with her loyalty. And with her heart.

  • Elatsoe

    Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger

RECOMMENDED: Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger is still $2.99! I’m surprised I haven’t featured this one on Get Rec’d yet, since I do recommend this one a lot. It’s a spooky YA mystery with an asexual Indigenous teen as the main character. Really good.

Imagine an America very similar to our own. It’s got homework, best friends, and pistachio ice cream.

There are some differences. This America has been shaped dramatically by the magic, monsters, knowledge, and legends of its peoples, those Indigenous and those not. Some of these forces are charmingly everyday, like the ability to make an orb of light appear or travel across the world through rings of fungi. But other forces are less charming and should never see the light of day.

Elatsoe lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry. The picture-perfect facade of Willowbee masks gruesome secrets, and she will rely on her wits, skills, and friends to tear off the mask and protect her family.

ELATSOE is on special at for Apple iBooks readers, too!

  4. Anne says:

Funny You Should Ask is a lovely, heartfelt ‘grown-up’ story. It reminded me a bit of How to Fake It in Hollywood. Similar vibes. One of my favourite reads so far this year.

  5. Jen says:

I DNF’d These Hollow Vows. I wanted to like it, but the female lead gave me too much “not like other girl” energy + seemed to be bad at her job, so I peaced out. Mileage may vary!

  6. Emily C says:

I would definitely categorize Funny You Should Ask as a romance, and it was absolutely lovely. Generally I am not a fan of second chance romance, or celebrity romance and yet I adored this book. I think that’s because we get to explore both characters’ real growth from their first weekend together to their time in the present. It’s one of my favorite books I’ve read this year, and the last one I stayed up for for Bad Decisions Book Club.

I’m here to say that you should read elatsoe. It was an A read for me (obviously not when you’re in the mood for romance). I don’t remember it being too gory but it does deal with murder and serial killers. Also there is a faithful ghost dog!

  9. Steffi says:

I read Elatsoe over Christmas per the SBTB recommendations, and I absolutely loved it. It took a few pages to get into, but then it was a fantastic read.

Since I saw on one of the Whatcha Reading? threads that someone else is also reading The Diviners series by Libba Bray, Before the Devil Breaks You (The Diviners, book 3) is $1.99 on Amazon US

  11. Stovesway says:

“Funny You Should Ask” is a charming and heartwarming “grown-up” story, reminiscent of “How to Fake It in Hollywood.” It’s easily one of my top reads.
