  • Something Wild and Wonderful

Something Wild and Wonderful by Anita Kelly

Something Wild and Wonderful by Anita Kelly is $2.99! I believe this is a today-only type deal, so get it while you can. This one was mentioned on both recent podcasts and Hide Your Wallet.

From the author of Love & Other Disasters comes a sparkling grumpy-meets-sunshine rom-com featuring two men’s sweeping journey across the Northwestern wilderness.

When Alexei Lebedev finally comes out to his conservative community, it does not go well. That’s how he ended up on the rugged Pacific Crest Trail, hoping he can figure out a new life plan in the thousands of miles it’ll take to walk the famed hike. He’s prepared for rattlesnakes, blisters, and months of solitude. What he’s not prepared for is the ray of sunshine named Ben Caravalho.

Charismatic and outgoing, Ben’s personality and infectious laughter is a stark opposite to Alexei’s quiet, reserved demeanor. But no matter how determined Alexei is to hike the trail alone, it seems he and Ben can’t avoid being drawn to each other. Through snow crossings and close calls with coyotes, Alexei inches closer to letting Ben in. As Alexei learns of Ben’s loving family and supportive friends, he begins to get a taste of what found family and belonging could truly feel like. But just as Alexei starts to let down his defenses, a sudden change in plans reawakens his fears—and he must discover if he has the courage to face something even scarier than the trail less traveled: letting himself fall.

  • Savage City

    Savage City by L. Penelope

Savage City by L. Penelope is 99c! Now I thought I saw this as a KDD last week, so this deal could expire at any moment. It involves a woman who gets transported to a fantasy world where she’s mistaken for a king’s daughter. Have any of you read this one?

For Talia, death is only the beginning of survival…

When a tragic accident cuts my lonely life short, instead of heaven or hell, I’m stolen away to a terrifying city of warring shifter clans—the Nimali and the Fai. The Nimali mistake me for their missing princess. Her father, the dragon king, is identical to my own. But in this world, he dotes on me with the love and affection I always craved. And in a land with no tolerance for outsiders, feigning amnesia and impersonating shifter royalty may be the only way to survive.

For Ryin, falling in love is the worst kind of betrayal…

As a Fai warrior in captivity, I’m forced to serve my enemy even as I plot their destruction. The lost princess returned much changed, now the heat between us crackles irresistibly. While helping her heal using my magical talents, I begin to question what I thought I knew about the Nimali. She remains as forbidden as ever, but she also might be the key to freedom for me and my people.

Caught between two enemy factions balancing on the knife-blade of annihilation, our lies are the only thing keeping us alive, but they just might be our undoing.

  • Temporary

    Temporary by Sarina Bowen

Temporary by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry is $3.80 or $3.99 depending on the vendor! I mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet because I’ve enjoyed both authors previously. I know many of you have too. Have you read this one? What did you think?

The most beautiful man I’ve ever seen is the same one who can ruin everything.

The first time I lay eyes on Callan Walker, I know he’ll be trouble. With his smug grin, hot Aussie accent and thousand dollar shoes, he’s just the kind of rich guy who always gets what he wants.

And he wants two things: a night of sin, and my cooperation as he outmaneuvers his powerful mother to take control of his uncle’s estate.

I can’t afford either one. I’m the only thing standing between my little sister and the foster care system. He may have money and charm on his side, but I have something even more powerful — pure desperation. This temp job at his mother’s company can become a full time job for me. It has to.

But when Callan’s eyes rake over my body, sometimes I forget my obligations. His piercing gaze finds the fun, optimistic girl I used to be and not the tired person I’ve become.

And it works–if only for a moment. Our night together was a mistake. I can’t afford to get sucked into his high-powered family’s treachery. But the closer I get to Callan, the more layers I find beneath those expensive clothes. Though I can’t forget this is temporary. He’s temporary. I have too much to lose.

Too bad my foolish heart didn’t get the memo…

  • Prince of Air and Darkness

Prince of Air and Darkness by M.A. Grant

Prince of Air and Darkness by M.A. Grant is $1.99! This is a gay fantasy romance with a royal fae hero and a magical human. Lots of catnip here with forced proximity and enemies to lovers. It seems like this is on the line of new adult and the magical school being more like a college, with the characters in their early twenties.

Phineas Smith has been cursed with a power no one could control.

Roark Lyne is his worst enemy and his only hope.

The only human student at Mather’s School of Magick, Phineas Smith has a target on his back. Born with the rare ability to tap into unlimited magick, he finds both Faerie Courts want his allegiance—and will do anything to get it.

They don’t realize he can’t levitate a feather, much less defend the Faerie Realm as it slips into civil war.

Unseelie Prince Roark Lyne, Phineas’s roommate—and self-proclaimed arch nemesis—is beautiful and brave and a pain in the ass. Phineas can’t begin to sort through their six years of sexual tension masquerading as mutual dislike. But Roark is also the only one able to help Finn tame his magick.

Trusting Roark’s mysterious motives may be foolish; not accepting his temporary protection would be deadly.

Caught in the middle of the impending war, Phineas and Roark forge a dangerous alliance. And as the walls between them crumble, Phineas realizes that Roark isn’t the monster he’d imagined. But their growing intimacy threatens to expose a secret that could either turn the tide of the war…or destroy them both.

English major and literature nerd here: Temporary reminded me in an obscure way of Henry James’s THE SPOILS OF POYNTON (older woman hires younger woman to inventory an arts & antiques-filled home, older woman’s son shows up and falls for the younger woman) if it had been a romance with an HEA. TEMPORARY is well-written, but the hero’s mother is an awful homophobe, so cw/tw for some of her comments and actions.

I didn’t enjoy Prince of Air and Darkness at all.

Here’s my 2/5 star GR review:
Meh. There are several things I don’t understand about this mm urban fantasy set at a magical college, including why I read the whole thing. The plot is kind of a mess, the college setting was not believable and the writing isn’t to my taste. But somehow the two main characters were compelling enough that I kept reading.

Keepsake (True North 3) by Sarina Bowen is currently free.

I JUST bought Something Wild and Wonderful last Wednesday full price (which I never do) because I loved the sample so very much. So I’m bummed I missed the sale! Love the main characters so much, and the description of walking the Pacific Coast Trail is wonderful.

  5. flchen1 says:

Hugs, @Maureen, but what a lovely compliment to Anita Kelly!
