  • Something Wilder

    Something Wilder by Christina Lauren

Something Wilder by Christina Lauren is $3.99! This came out in May and has been recommend on The Rec League: More Action Adventure Romance.

Growing up the daughter of notorious treasure hunter and absentee father Duke Wilder left Lily without much patience for the profession…or much money in the bank. But Lily is nothing if not resourceful, and now uses Duke’s coveted hand-drawn maps to guide tourists on fake treasure hunts through the red rock canyons of Utah. It pays the bills but doesn’t leave enough to fulfill her dream of buying back the beloved ranch her father sold years ago, and definitely not enough to deal with the sight of the man she once loved walking back into her life with a motley crew of friends ready to hit the trails. Frankly, Lily would like to take him out into the wilderness—and leave him there.

Leo Grady knew mirages were a thing in the desert, but they’d barely left civilization when the silhouette of his greatest regret comes into focus in the flickering light of the campfire. Ready to leave the past behind him, Leo wants nothing more than to reconnect with his first and only love. Unfortunately, Lily Wilder is all business, drawing a clear line in the sand: it’s never going to happen.

But when the trip goes horribly and hilariously wrong, the group wonders if maybe the legend of the hidden treasure wasn’t a gimmick after all. There’s a chance to right the wrongs—of Duke’s past and their own—but only if Leo and Lily can confront their history and work together. Alone under the stars in the isolated and dangerous mazes of the Canyonlands, Leo and Lily must decide whether they’ll risk their lives and hearts on the adventure of a lifetime.

From the author of the “heartfelt and funny” (Publishers Weekly) sensation The Unhoneymooners, this page-turning adventure full of second chances, complicated relationships, and the breathtaking beauty of the American Southwest will take fans on one wild ride.

  • You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi

RECOMMENDED: You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi is $3.99! This was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet and I’m going to give a spoiler and say it’s one of the SBTB’s best books of the year (which will be revealed tomorrow).

New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award finalist reimagines the love story in this fresh and seductive novel about a young woman seeking joy while healing from loss.

Feyi Adekola wants to learn how to be alive again.

It’s been five years since the accident that killed the love of her life and she’s almost a new person now—an artist with her own studio, and sharing a brownstone apartment with her ride-or-die best friend, Joy, who insists it’s time for Feyi to ease back into the dating scene. Feyi isn’t ready for anything serious, but a steamy encounter at a rooftop party cascades into a whirlwind summer she could have never imagined: a luxury trip to a tropical island, decadent meals in the glamorous home of a celebrity chef, and a major curator who wants to launch her art career.

She’s even started dating the perfect guy, but their new relationship might be sabotaged before it has a chance by the dangerous thrill Feyi feels every time she locks eyes with the one person in the house who is most definitely off-limits. This new life she asked for just got a lot more complicated, and Feyi must begin her search for real answers. Who is she ready to become? Can she release her past and honor her grief while still embracing her future? And, of course, there’s the biggest question of all—how far is she willing to go for a second chance at love?

Akwaeke Emezi’s vivid and passionate writing takes us deep into a world of possibility and healing, and the constant bravery of choosing love against all odds.

  • The American Roommate Experiment

The American Roommate Experiment by Elena Armas

The American Roommate Experiment by Elena Armas is $2.99! I know her previous book The Spanish Love Deception got a lot of buzz, but I know little about this one. Have you read it?

From the author of the Goodreads Choice Award winner The Spanish Love Deception, the eagerly anticipated follow-up featuring Rosie Graham and Lucas Martín, who are forced to share a New York apartment.

Rosie Graham has a problem. A few, actually. She just quit her well paid job to focus on her secret career as a romance writer. She hasn’t told her family and now has terrible writer’s block. Then, the ceiling of her New York apartment literally crumbles on her. Luckily she has her best friend Lina’s spare key while she’s out of town. But Rosie doesn’t know that Lina has already lent her apartment to her cousin Lucas, who Rosie has been stalking—for lack of a better word—on Instagram for the last few months. Lucas seems intent on coming to her rescue like a Spanish knight in shining armor. Only this one strolls around the place in a towel, has a distracting grin, and an irresistible accent. Oh, and he cooks.

Lucas offers to let Rosie stay with him, at least until she can find some affordable temporary housing. And then he proposes an outrageous experiment to bring back her literary muse and meet her deadline: He’ll take her on a series of experimental dates meant to jump-start her romantic inspiration. Rosie has nothing to lose. Her silly, online crush is totally under control—but Lucas’s time in New York has an expiration date, and six weeks may not be enough, for either her or her deadline.

  • Foul Lady Fortune

Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong

Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong is $3.99! I mentioned this back in September’s Hide Your Wallet. This has a pair of rival spies pretending to be married in a magical Shanghai. Though it’s labeled YA, I think it works well as a crossover novel.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends comes the first book in a captivating new duology following an ill-matched pair of spies posing as a married couple to investigate a series of brutal murders in 1930s Shanghai.

It’s 1931 in Shanghai, and the stage is set for a new decade of intrigue.

Four years ago, Rosalind Lang was brought back from the brink of death, but the strange experiment that saved her also stopped her from sleeping and aging—and allows her to heal from any wound. In short, Rosalind cannot die. Now, desperate for redemption from her traitorous past, she uses her abilities as an assassin for her country.

    Code name: Fortune.

But when the Japanese Imperial Army begins its invasion march, Rosalind’s mission pivots. A series of murders is causing unrest in Shanghai, and the Japanese are under suspicion. Rosalind’s new orders are to infiltrate foreign society and identify the culprits behind the terror plot before more of her people are killed.

To reduce suspicion, however, she must pose as the wife of another Nationalist spy, Orion Hong, and though Rosalind finds Orion’s cavalier attitude and playboy demeanor infuriating, she is willing to work with him for the greater good. But Orion has an agenda of his own, and Rosalind has secrets that she wants to keep buried. As they both attempt to unravel the conspiracy, the two spies soon find that there are deeper and more horrifying layers to this mystery than they ever imagined.

Oh I’m interested to read the Emezi!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is on sale https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/bookinfo/the-seven-husbands-of-evelyn-hugo/

  2. Sunflower says:

I really liked The American Roommate Experiment, I think the heroine is more likeable than the one in The Spanish Love Deception although I enjoyed TSLD a tad more. Both books are slowburn romance (which I love) in case that is or isn’t your cup of tea.

  3. LML says:

Swimming against the tide: I thought You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty was awful. The setting is lush, the characters believable, but I didn’t enjoy reading what I perceived as their astounding absence of consideration for anyone or anything beyond their lust for one another.

  4. FashionablyEvil says:

@LML—I love a contrary review! When I read a book that’s gotten a lot of popular acclaim and I just don’t enjoy it, I go looking for the one and two star ratings on Goodreads to see if I have complaints in common with the other people who didn’t like it (which I usually do!) (See, for example THE HOUSE BY THE CERULEAN SEA and BOYFRIEND MATERIAL.)

  5. cleo says:

I enjoyed You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty but I was very glad that I’d read ahead of time that it doesn’t really follow romance genre conventions. The protagonist gets involved with two other men before meeting her final LI at like the 30% mark.

It’s one of the best portrayals of art and grief that I’ve read.

  6. Neile says:

@cleo “..one of the best portrayals of art and grief that I’ve read.” I ditto that, hard.

  7. flchen1 says:

Heroes in Love, a box set of the first three in Jennifer Skully and Bella Andre’s Mavericks in Love series, is on sale for $.99.

  8. ReadKnitSnark says:

Servant Mage by Kate Elliott is $3-ish on kindle. Get it!

Not romance, but poking-at-genre-conventions fantasy. You expect me to go on an epic quest with you? How about we bargain? The Bad New Days are terrible for everyone… well, those Good Old Days weren’t all that, either. Choices are made. A thought-provoking stand-alone novel(la?) instead of the beginning of a series.
