  • Grave Reservations

    Grave Reservations by Cherie Priest

Grave Reservations by Cherie Priest is $1.99! This is book one in a mystery series with paranormal elements. It also gives me Stephanie Plum vibes. I love Priest’s horror novels, so I’m curious about this one.

A psychic travel agent and a Seattle PD detective solve a murder in this quirky mystery in the vein of Lisa Lutz’s The Spellman Files and Charlaine Harris’s Aurora Teagarden series.

Meet Leda Foley: devoted friend, struggling travel agent, and inconsistent psychic. When Leda, sole proprietor of Foley’s Flights of Fancy, impulsively re-books Seattle PD detective Grady Merritt’s flight, her life changes in ways she couldn’t have predicted.

After watching his original plane blow up from the safety of the airport, Grady realizes that Leda’s special abilities could help him with a cold case he just can’t crack.

Despite her scattershot premonitions, she agrees for a secret reason: her fiancé’s murder remains unsolved. Leda’s psychic abilities couldn’t help the case several years before, but she’s been honing her skills and drawing a crowd at her favorite bar’s open-mic nights, where she performs Klairvoyant Karaoke—singing whatever song comes to mind when she holds people’s personal effects. Now joined by a rag-tag group of bar patrons and pals alike, Leda and Grady set out to catch a killer—and learn how the two cases that haunt them have more in common than they ever suspected.

  • Daughter of the Blood

Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop

Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop is 99c! This is the first book in The Black Jewels series and was recommended in our Inner Goth Rec League. Ellen notes that this series deserves all of the content warnings. I know for many readers this was a formative series for their fantasy reading. What are your thoguhts?

The Dark Kingdom is preparing itself for the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy–the arrival of a new Queen, a Witch who will wield more power than even the High Lord of Hell himself. But this new ruler is young, and very susceptible to influence and corruption; whoever controls her controls the Darkness. And now, three sworn enemies begin a ruthless game of politics and intrigue, magic and betrayal, and the destiny of an entire world is at stake.

  • The Work of Art

The Work of Art by Mimi Matthews

The Work of Art by Mimi Matthews is FREE! This is book one in The Somerset Stories series. Matthews has been well-reviewed on the site and is often recommended in the comments, though I haven’t heard much about this older title.

    An Uncommon Beauty…
Hidden away in rural Devonshire, Phyllida Satterthwaite has always been considered more odd than beautiful. But in London, her oddity has made her a sensation. Far worse, it’s caught the eye of the sinister Duke of Moreland — a notorious art collector obsessed with acquiring one-of-a-kind treasures. To escape the duke’s clutches, she’s going to need a little help.

    An Unlikely Hero…
Captain Arthur Heywood’s days of heroism are long past. Grievously injured in the Peninsular War, he can no longer walk unaided, let alone shoot a pistol. What use can he possibly be to a damsel in distress? He has nothing left to offer except his good name.

Can a marriage of convenience save Philly from the vengeful duke? Or will life with Arthur put her — and her heart — in more danger than ever?

  • The Hostage Bargain

The Hostage Bargain by Annika Martin

The Hostage Bargain by Annika Martin is FREE! This has been mentioned in the comments of at least 3 Rec Leagues: More Action Adventure Romance, No Bleak Moment, and Heists.

My evil banker boss had the whole town under his thumb, but nobody more than me.

    I was miserable. Trapped.

Until the three hot AF outlaws came to town.

They robbed my boss’s bank like it was child’s play. They took me hostage. They blew that town in a blaze of fury.

    Seriously OMG.

I’d never been in a car chase before—I’d never even been more than a few miles away from our farm. It was the most exciting thing that had ever happened to me, and I was all in.

Then I learned about their wicked ideas for the four of us—outrageous and shocking desires that mean I’ll never have to choose between them.

    Yes, please!

But now my beautiful badasses are becoming obsessed with me. They’ll do anything to protect me. And the more I discover how wounded and lost they are, the more I realize how much they need me.

Being wanted by three protective men is the best thing ever. Too bad they’re wanted by every law enforcement agency ever.

How will our fledgling family survive this?

  1. Todd says:

The Amazon link for the Mimi Matthews seems to be wrong – it took me to a “sorry we can’t find that page” message (with a cute dog picture).

  2. Darlynne says:

I’ve read all except the Matthews book. GRAVE RESERVATIONS was fun and wacky. DAUGHTER OF THE BLOOD was very good and deserves all the warnings. I don’t have any words for THE HOSTAGE BARGAIN. There was humor and sexy-times and I had no idea where it was going. The next book(s) supply more details on the relationships, I think? Can’t beat free, however,so go for it.

  3. SB Sarah says:

Should be fixed – sorry about that!

  4. TinaNoir says:

Work of Art was the first Mimi Matthews book I ever read and I loved it. Prompted me to check out her back list. I thought she was a great new find for me at the time. Reminds me of when I “discovered” Stella Riley.

  5. SusanH says:

I love Mimi Matthews. She’s great for those who like their historical romance to feel very grounded in the era. The characters and plots feel appropriate to their time period. Same with Stella Riley, who I only recently discovered. I wish that style of writing was currently popular. If anyone can suggest similar writers, please do.

  6. MaryK says:

Just so you know, the content warnings for The Black Jewels series would include torture and sadism.

  7. Kareni says:

I read the Black Jewels books after really enjoying the author’s The Others books. They truly have some disgusting scenes that have stayed with me. I put them down many times; I guess it’s to the author’s credit that I kept picking them back up until I had finished the trilogy. Take the content warnings seriously.

    Reposting from yesterday ~

Breakaway (The Sin Bin: West Coast Book 1) E.M. Lindsey is currently free for US Kindle readers. This m/m hockey romance was released last month.

  9. ReadKnitSnark says:

@SusanH Try Lynne Connolly’s Richard & Rose series beginning with YORKSHIRE. Fall in love with that series, read all the books. Go on to read her other myriad historical series.

And I always feel that KJ Charles writes era-appropriate stories. Take your pick of time period and queer pairing. All are awesome.

  10. TinaNoir says:

Cosign on the Richard and Rose series. One of my very favorites. They are a great ride or die couple throughout their whole series. Also it is set in the Georgian period and the way Connolly describes the fashion (powder, macquillage, the jewelry placement) gives a good sense of time and place.

  11. One of the Ms. M's says:

“Being wanted by three protective men is the best thing ever.”

I…. good for you, girl. That sounds exhausting to me.

  12. Miss Louisa says:

The left border on the Mimi Matthews cover reminds me of the little golden books my mom would regularly buy us. I may buy it just for the memories of The Monster at the End of the Book with Grover from Sesame Street or my younger brother sitting in my grandmother’s lap while she made up a story for us based on the pictures of a winter themed book. She didn’t speak English but encouraged love of stories.

  13. Emma L says:

“Lynne Connolly’s Richard & Rose series beginning with YORKSHIRE” – currently 99p on Amazon UK. Thanks for the recommendation!
