  • Slippery Creatures

    Slippery Creatures by K.J. Charles

RECOMMENDED: Slippery Creatures by K.J. Charles is 99c! AJ reviewed this one and gave it a B+:

Long story short, if you’re looking for a fun thriller and you don’t mind buckling up for the long-ish haul on the romance (or if you just miss used bookstores as much as I do), give it a try!

Will Darling came back from the Great War with a few scars, a lot of medals, and no idea what to do next. Inheriting his uncle’s chaotic second-hand bookshop is a blessing…until strange visitors start making threats. First a criminal gang, then the War Office, both telling Will to give them the information they want, or else.

Will has no idea what that information is, and nobody to turn to, until Kim Secretan—charming, cultured, oddly attractive—steps in to offer help. As Kim and Will try to find answers and outrun trouble, mutual desire grows along with the danger.

And then Will discovers the truth about Kim. His identity, his past, his real intentions. Enraged and betrayed, Will never wants to see him again.

But Will possesses knowledge that could cost thousands of lives. Enemies are closing in on him from all sides—and Kim is the only man who can help.

A 1920s m/m romance trilogy in the spirit of Golden Age pulp fiction.

  • The Kindred Spirits Supper Club

The Kindred Spirits Supper Club by Amy Reichert

The Kindred Hearts Supper Club by Amy E. Reichert is $1.99! Reichert’s books, I feel, lean more toward fiction with romantic elements, but often have a lot of foodie elements. There also appears to be a ghosty/paranormal element.

Jobless and forced home to Wisconsin, journalist Sabrina Monroe can tolerate reunions with frenemies and kisses from old boyfriends, but not the literal ghosts that greet her in this heartwarming tale of the power of love and connection from acclaimed author Amy E. Reichert.

For Sabrina Monroe, moving back home to the Wisconsin Dells–the self-described Waterpark Capital of the World–means returning to the Monroe family curse: the women in her family can see spirits who come to them for help with unfinished business. But Sabrina’s always redirected the needy spirits to her mom, who’s much better suited for the job. The one exception has always been Molly, a bubbly rom-com loving ghost, who stuck by Sabrina’s side all through her lonely childhood.

Her personal life starts looking up when Ray, the new local restaurateur, invites Sabrina to his supper club, where he flirts with her over his famous Brandy Old-Fashioneds. He’s charming and handsome, but Sabrina tells herself she doesn’t have time for romance–she needs to focus on finding a job. Except the longer she’s in the Dells, the harder it is to resist her feelings for Ray. Who can turn down a cute guy with a fondness for rescue dogs and an obsession with perfecting his fried cheese curds recipe?

When the Dells starts to feel like home for the first time and with Ray in her corner, Sabrina begins to realize that she can make a difference and help others wherever she is.

  • The Checklist

    The Checklist by Addie Woolridge

The Checklist by Addie Woolridge is $1.99! This is another book that seems more like fiction with romance elements than a contemporary romance. Woolridge’s second book, The Bounce Back, has been mentioned on the site.

In an energetic debut novel about personal and professional chaos, author Addie Woolridge introduces a multicultural cast whose exploits are redefining the modern rom-com.

Killing it at work? Check. Gorgeous boyfriend? Check. Ambitions derailed by an insecure boss? Sigh—check.

Things were going a little too well for Dylan Delacroix. After upstaging her boss on a big account, she gets dispatched to the last place she wants to be: her hometown, Seattle. There, she must use her superstar corporate-consulting skills to curb the worst impulses of an impossibly eccentric tech CEO—if she doesn’t, she’s fired.

The fun doesn’t stop there: Dylan must also negotiate a ceasefire in the endless war between her bohemian parents and the straitlaced neighbors. Adding to the chaos is a wilting relationship with her boyfriend and a blossoming attraction to the neighbors’ smoking-hot son.

Suddenly Dylan has a million checklists, each a mile long. As personal and professional pressures mount, she finds it harder and harder to stay on track. Having always relied on her ability to manage the world around her, Dylan’s going to need a new plan. She may be down, but she’s definitely not out.

  • The Devil You Know

The Devil You Know by Kit Rocha

Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha is $2.99! Sneezy reviewed this one and gave it a B:

Despite my confusion regarding some of the worldbuilding, the characters and their relationships are developed beautifully, and the entire story thrummed with the sort of vitality that you can only get from a post-apocalyptic road trip with suped-up BAMFs. I can’t rave enough about the emotional literacy this book is built on, which I find incredibly catnippy.

Maya has had a price on her head from the day she escaped the TechCorps. Genetically engineered for genius and trained for revolution, there’s only one thing she can’t do—forget.

Gray has finally broken free of the Protectorate, but he can’t escape the time bomb in his head. His body is rejecting his modifications, and his months are numbered.

When Maya’s team uncovers an operation trading in genetically enhanced children, she’ll do anything to stop them. Even risk falling back into the hands of the TechCorps.

And Gray has found a purpose for his final days: keeping Maya safe.

THE SIREN OF SUSSEX by Mimi Matthews is $1.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! I’ve been waiting for this one to go on sale since book #2 is coming soon.

  2. chacha1 says:

Ooh thanks @KitBee – ran over to snatch that up. 🙂

Putting the Will Darling Adventures on my list for a re-read on vacation.

  3. carabwnc says:

All KJ Charles titles are worth a read or two or three. BTW, while I love supporting the Bitchery by purchasing through the river company, I wanted to share that KJ also sells her ebooks on Gumroad. Not usually at a sale price, but you own the ebook files free and clear. I’d love to know if anyone knows other romance authors on Gumroad.

  4. Lena Brassard/Ren Benton says:

@carabwnc: I know Gail Carriger, Grace Burrowes, and Lilith Saintcrow have things at Gumroad. The tagging and search there are miserable, though, so good luck finding anything without external links.

“Send to Kindle” will allegedly start converting epubs later this year, and not having to fuss with multiple file types will make it 10% less complicated to sell direct (through Gumroad, Payhip, Ko-Fi, Patreon, Itch.io, etc.). I doubt Big River’s intent is to make it easier to spend your money elsewhere, but until they decide it’s a mistake and disable it, a few more authors not locked into KU exclusivity might branch out to direct sales.

  5. Kristal says:

Alas, The Devil You Know is $12.99. It’s the first book, Deal With the Devil, that’s $2.99.

  6. kkw says:

Ok but Slippery Creatures was a only provisionally graded a B+ pending resolution of the romance over the course of the trilogy. Which has since been published, and is thus resolved, and intensely satisfying – in part because the arc takes 3 books so has 3x the payoff. I’m just saying.

  7. Meme says:

I listened to the audiobooks for The Will Darling Adventures on a road trip and they’re so perfect that I imprinted and now ALL I WANT for road trips/driving through mountains is brilliant narrators doing plummy accented mysteries. dialogue about Bolsheviks a plus but not mandatory.

  8. Lena Brassard/Ren Benton says:

@carabwnc: Jeannie Lin is also on Gumroad! (Le Brain only had to chew on the elusive fourth known quantity for the better part of an entire day…)
