  • On a Night Like This

On a Night Like This by Lindsey Kelk

On a Night Like This by Lindsey Kelk is 99c! This is a contemporary romance (or perhaps chick lit?) and I believe was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Elyse has read a few of Kelk’s books and really enjoyed them.

Within days of wishing she could change her life, Fran Cooper is leaving rainy England to become acting assistant to a famous singer, on a yacht in the Mediterranean. Their destination is a tiny Italian island that’s hosting the biggest celebrity gala of the season—the Crystal Ball.

And while not everything about her new role goes precisely to plan, when she – quite literally – bumps into tall, dark and handsome Evan, a man able to keep his cool in the face of chaos, the magic really begins.

Evan makes her a promise: no last names, no life stories, just one unforgettable night. Wearing a designer dress and drinking champagne, Fran is soon a million miles away from life back in the UK.

And that’s the problem: Evan belongs at the Crystal Ball and Fran is a gatecrasher. They may be soulmates, but their homes are an ocean apart, their lives a world apart. They’ll never meet again – unless, on a night like this, everything can change forever…

  • American Dreamer

    American Dreamer by Adriana Herrera

American Dreamer by Adriana Herrera is $1.99! Sarah read this one and gave it a B:

This was a truly delicious, delectable, emotional story with resonance and heart and so much food, it might as well have its own stomach because yours shouldn’t be growling alone.

No one ever said big dreams come easy

For Nesto Vasquez, moving his Afro-Caribbean food truck from New York City to the wilds of Upstate New York is a huge gamble. If it works? He’ll be a big fish in a little pond. If it doesn’t? He’ll have to give up the hustle and return to the day job he hates. He’s got six months to make it happen—the last thing he needs is a distraction.

Jude Fuller is proud of the life he’s built on the banks of Cayuga Lake. He has a job he loves and good friends. It’s safe. It’s quiet. And it’s damn lonely. Until he tries Ithaca’s most-talked-about new lunch spot and works up the courage to flirt with the handsome owner. Soon he can’t get enough—of Nesto’s food orof Nesto. For the first time in his life, Jude can finally taste the kind of happiness that’s always been just out of reach.

An opportunity too good to pass up could mean a way to stay together and an incredible future for them both…if Nesto can remember happiness isn’t always measured by business success. And if Jude can overcome his past and trust his man will never let him down.

  • The Night Raven

The Night Raven by Sarah Painter

The Night Raven by Sarah Painter is 99c! KJ Charles wrote a review for this on on Goodreads when it first came out. She enjoyed the premise, but found the shoddy editing to be distracting. Here’s hoping it’s had a bit of a clean up since then.

    Meet Lydia Crow…

Lydia has always known she has no power, especially next to her infamous and more-than-slightly dodgy family. Which is why she carved her own life as a private investigator far away from London.

When a professional snafu forces her home, the head of the family calls in a favour, and Lydia finds herself investigating the disappearance of her cousin, Maddie.

Soon, Lydia is neck-deep in problems: her new flatmate is a homicidal ghost, the intriguing, but forbidden, DCI Fleet is acting in a distinctly unprofessional manner, and tensions between the old magical families are rising.

The Crows used to rule the roost and rumours claim they are still the strongest.

The Silvers have a facility for lying and they run the finest law firm in London.

The Pearl family were costermongers and everybody knows that a Pearlie can sell feathers to a bird.

The Fox family… Well. The less said about the Fox family the better.

For seventy-five years, a truce between the four families has held strong, but could the disappearance of Maddie Crow be the thing to break it?

The Night Raven is the first book in Crow Investigations, an exciting new paranormal mystery series from bestselling author of magical fiction, Sarah Painter.

  • The Twelve Dates of Christmas

The Twelve Dates of Christmas by Jenny Bayliss

The Twelve Dates of Christmas by Jenny Bayliss is $2.99! This is a contemporary holiday romance (maybe women’s fiction?) and it set in England. As a side note, I did an event with the author and she was an absolute delight. It was a panel on Christmas romances.

‘Tis the season for finding romance in this hilarious and uplifting holiday read

When it comes to relationships, thirty-four-year-old Kate Turner is ready to say “Bah, humbug.” The sleepy town of Blexford, England, isn’t exactly brimming with prospects, and anyway, Kate’s found fulfillment in her career as a designer, and in her delicious side job baking for her old friend Matt’s neighborhood café. But then her best friend signs her up for a dating agency that promises to help singles find love before the holidays. Twenty-three days until Christmas. Twelve dates with twelve different men. The odds must finally be in her favor . . . right?

Yet with each new date more disastrous than the one before–and the whole town keeping tabs on her misadventures–Kate must remind herself that sometimes love, like mistletoe, shows up where it’s least expected. And maybe, just maybe, it’s been right under her nose all along. . . .

‘American Dreamer’ was my introduction to Adriana Herrera, whose distinctive voice has kept me coming back to her M/M books.

random note, today there’s a Kindle Free deal for ‘The Jack of All Trades’ by M.A. Nichols, a traditional Regency romance with quite a few good ratings and one of the best illustrated covers I’ve ever seen. Have never read this author but I’m picking it up because a) free b) that painting.

  2. JoanneBB says:

The night raven is cleaner now, the editing is not as distracting. I didn’t finish the series but I did read the first 5 and I own the 6th… I bought them all last fall over a 3 week period. I’d say it’s worth trying at this price. I’d put it as magical realism heading toward fantasy, instead of romance, there are romance elements but not a guaranteed HEA or even HFN.

Got a Renee Ann Miller newsletter saying that Never Marry a Scandalous Duke has a one-day sale on Amazon today at $1.99. I like her other books, and this one sounds like a lot of catnip (socially awkward lady entomologist and titular scandalous duke with young girl wards). If nothing else, it will keep me entertained on the plane!

  4. Lisa F says:

Haven’t read any of these yet except for the Herrera, which is excellent.

    SPOILER

This is going to be somewhat spoilery for The Night Raven. I enjoyed the book but was really irritated with the heroine for how she treated the romantic interest at the end. The book isn’t a romance and the romantic aspect was very slight so I wasn’t applying romance conventions. I just thought it was a stupid way to act in general.

She decides that since she’s going to stay in London after all, the guy is more useful as a business contact and she doesn’t mix business and pleasure. I was like gurrrl! He’s a great guy and she ditches him just like that. I was so irritated I haven’t continued with the series. I don’t really trust the heroine’s judgment.

I see from @JoanneBB that the romantic elements continue so I wonder if she gets back with the guy or there’s some kind of twist in later books.

Trish Doller’s SUITE SPOT is $3.99 in the Kindle store today. I loved Doller’s FLOAT PLAN (one of my favorite books of 2021) and had been waiting for a price drop to read the sister’s story.

Also free in the Kindle store today is BEACH READS BOX SET, Volume 2. I have to return to work on Wednesday (students return to school August 8), but for those of you who still have the potential they go to (and read on) the beach, the set includes:

BEARD IN HIDING by Penny Reid
    MR. MAYFAIR by Louise Bay
DEAR SEXY EX-BOYFRIEND by Lauren Blakely
THE YEAR WE FELL DOWN by Sarina Bowen
    BIG BEN by Nana Malone
BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN PIECES by Catherine Cowles
RETURN TO US by Corinne Michaels
    TATTERED by Devney Perry
    REPEAT by Kylie Scott
    SECURING PIPER by Susan Stoker

It’s worth grabbing for THE YEAR WE FELL DOWN and REPEAT alone, plus the chance to read some new-to-you authors.

  7. Liz says:

I really loved “The Twelve Dates of Christmas”–lovely wintry Christmasy English-villagey vibes, and it’s hilarious at points. I would consider it women’s fic; the MC spends most of the book on dates with different people, though it’s obvious who she’ll end up with. Will definitely be rereading.

  8. Kareni says:

I’ll second @DDD’s recommendation of THE YEAR WE FELL DOWN by Sarina Bowen; it’s my favorite new adult romance. I really like the fact that the lead characters converse.

  9. Darlynne says:

@MaryK: You’re absolutely right and I never went beyond book one for the same reason. While understanding that she’s just starting out in the business, doesn’t yet understand her own abilities/agency, I did not think much of her decision-making. I don’t mind being wrong and would gladly continue with the series, but those things would have to change. Glad others have enjoyed the books.

  10. MaryK says:

@Darlynne – I’m relieved to know it wasn’t just me! I have wondered if I was being unreasonable. When I see the series mentioned, I think about picking up book 2 because it’s an interesting world but haven’t been able to move past my reaction to book 1.
