  • A Lady for a Duke

A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall

HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDA Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. Trust me, it’s worth the $3! Shana just reviewed this one and gave it a Squee grade:

Many of the book’s themes are around friendship–loving a friend but hiding parts of yourself, learning to connect with other women, and the perils of competitive friendships. I loved A Lady for a Duke, it’s a must-read for historical romance fans looking for a new take on Regency friends-to-lovers.

When Viola Carroll was presumed dead at Waterloo she took the opportunity to live, at last, as herself. But freedom does not come without a price, and Viola paid for hers with the loss of her wealth, her title, and her closest companion, Justin de Vere, the Duke of Gracewood.

Only when their families reconnect, years after the war, does Viola learn how deep that loss truly was. Shattered without her, Gracewood has retreated so far into grief that Viola barely recognises her old friend in the lonely, brooding man he has become.

As Viola strives to bring Gracewood back to himself, fresh desires give new names to old feelings. Feelings that would have been impossible once and may be impossible still, but which Viola cannot deny. Even if they cost her everything, all over again.

  • We Set the Dark on Fire

We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia

RECOMMENDED: We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia is $1.99! This is a YA fantasy novel and Elyse gave this one a perfect grade. That’s right, it earned an A and it’s on sale:

The bottom line is, We Set the Dark on Fire has elements that I love–women coming together to dismantle the patriarchy, rebellion, secret affairs, and it’s written so superbly that I found myself relishing every chapter. There’s always an element of danger, of being found out, hovering in the background that carried a wonderful tension through the entire novel.

In this daring and romantic fantasy debut perfect for fans of The Handmaid’s Tale and Latinx authors Zoraida Córdova and Anna-Marie McLemore, society wife-in-training Dani has a great awakening after being recruited by rebel spies and falling for her biggest rival.

At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband’s household or raise his children. Both paths promise a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class.

Daniela Vargas is the school’s top student, but her pedigree is a lie. She must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society.

And school couldn’t prepare her for the difficult choices she must make after graduation, especially when she is asked to spy for a resistance group desperately fighting to bring equality to Medio.

Will Dani cling to the privilege her parents fought to win for her, or will she give up everything she’s strived for in pursuit of a free Medio—and a chance at a forbidden love?

  • Into the Drowning Deep

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

RECOMMENDED: Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price-matched. Elyse & I really enjoyed this horror/sci-fi novel. We jointly reviewed the book and ultimately decided on a B. We loved the cast of characters, but found the ending anticlimactic.

New York Times bestselling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.

Seven years ago, the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a “mockumentary” bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.

Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they’re not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life’s work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

  • Knit One, Girl Two

Knit One, Girl Two by Shira Glassman

RECOMMENDED: Knit One, Girl Two by Shira Glassman is $1.99! This is a F/F contemporary romance novella. Elyse gave it a B:

I can’t give Knit One, Girl Two a perfect grade because it’s got a big flaw, but I enjoyed it so much, and found it so happy-making, that I’ve got it give it credit for making my day a lot better.

Small-batch independent yarn dyer Clara Ziegler is eager to brainstorm new color combinations–if only she could come up with ideas she likes as much as last time! When she sees Danielle Solomon’s paintings of Florida wildlife by chance at a neighborhood gallery, she finds her source of inspiration. Outspoken, passionate, and complicated, Danielle herself soon proves even more captivating than her artwork…

Fluffy Jewish f/f contemporary set in the author’s childhood home of South Florida.

It has been 4 weeks since I read A Lady for a Duke and was told that my immediately placed new hold would be ready in 15 weeks. I am pleased to report that it currently looks like I only have 6 more weeks to go, and at this rate… that’s more like another 3 or 4 weeks? I don’t think there can be a greater testament to my love of this book than the fact that I am voluntarily thinking math related thoughts.
The obsessive curation of holds lists is actually totally normal.
It’s a good thing I am not allowed to buy books, at all, even on sale, because being able to read this whenever I chose would be really bad for productivity.

  2. WS says:

Well, drat it, I bought the Alexis Hall book at full price last week. If I’d known it was going on sale so soon, I would have waited.

  3. Melanie says:

I’m still waiting for my library hold of A Lady for a Duke to become available, so…click.

  4. Heather C says:

@Melanie…same. Plus amazon digital credits means this is now in my budget

My scifi book club read Into the Drowning Deep. They mostly all hated it, but it has been called the best discussion time we’ve ever had

  5. Lisa L says:

Wooohooo! I’m way out on the holds list and can definitely justify $2.99 for the Alexis Hall. So happy 😀

  6. Cristie says:

Really surprised the Alexis Hall is on sale so soon–thought I’d be waiting a year for it. Guess I can cancel my hold because this price is too good to resist.

  7. cat_blue says:

Picked up A Lady for a Duke, it’s been on my wishlist since I saw the review here!

  8. Lisa F says:

These are all good picks; A Lady for A Duke is definitely going to be in my top 10 for this year. We Set the Dark on Fire is extremely important and relevant.

  9. Emily C says:

I paid full price for the physical book of A Lady for a Duke and I have no regrets! It’s absolutely lovely and snap it up at this price if you haven’t already.
We Set the Dark on Fire sounds so timely today and the “burn the patriarchy” read that we all need.

  10. Georgina says:

Knit One, Girl Two is a very sweet, low-key novella.

  11. Sunflower says:

Lord of Stariel is also on sale (like 99 cents), or at least, was yesterday, I think it has a good review here.

  12. Penny says:

@Emily I did the same! But I grabbed this on sale to have the ebook version as well – ya know, just in case I lose the physical book lol

  13. Darlynne says:

Jen Williams writes one of my favorite fantasy series: The Winnowing Flame Trilogy. I couldn’t find these books in the US, but now the first, THE NINTH RAIN, is on sale at Amazon for $.99. What attracted me initially was a main character who is an older female explorer. The story is complex, violent and yet there is humor in these pages.

The great city of Ebora once glittered with gold. Now its streets are stalked by wolves. Tormalin the Oathless has no taste for sitting around waiting to die while the realm of his storied ancestors falls to pieces – talk about a guilt trip. Better to be amongst the living, where there are taverns full of women and wine.

When eccentric explorer, Lady Vincenza ‘Vintage’ de Grazon, offers him employment, he sees an easy way out. Even when they are joined by a fugitive witch with a tendency to set things on fire, the prospect of facing down monsters and retrieving ancient artefacts is preferable to the abomination he left behind.

But not everyone is willing to let the Eboran empire collapse, and the adventurers are quickly drawn into a tangled conspiracy of magic and war. For the Jure’lia are coming, and the Ninth Rain must fall…

  14. Kareni says:

Rosaline Parker Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall is a US Kindle deal today, June 25, for $1.99. It didn’t work for me but many others loved it.
