Cover Awe: Just Dreamy

Hey y’all! Let’s look at some covers we like!

A Misbegotten Match by Rita Boucher. A pale woman with dark hair in a gorgeous coral dress. She's relaxing on a cream-colored couch.

Amanda: I love how dreamy this looks.

Elyse: I love the corals and oranges.

Shana: Me too. And I love that she’s barefoot.

Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen. A young Black woman with an afro-style hair. She's a mermaid, with a pale green tail. She's covered in gold jewelry. The title is in bright gold.

Cover at by Jeff Manning

Maya: I hoped the title is embossed!!!!!

Sneezy: It’d be really cool if her jewelry were too!!!!!

Carrie: IMHO, we need to post this cover in awe over and over again.

Amanda: My one complaint is the Penguin logo. Get outta here. You’re ruining the shot! Thought I’m sure it’s not on the actual hardcover.

Vial of Tears by Cristin Bishara. An illustrated cover. Two young women with reddish brown hair are looking off into the distance. They are wearing light pink, gauzy dresses. One is wielding a dagger while smoke billows around them. A white owl flies toward them.

Cover art by Syd Mills

Shana: I love the movement and color, and the skepticism on both their faces. Also, isn’t that the owl from Labyrinth?

Amanda: There’s only one white owl in existence and it’s the Bowie owl obvi.

By the Book by Jasmine Guillory. The title in in purple. The cover is illustrated. A Black woman is sitting on top of the title. She is in a yellow dress and has a stack of paper in her hands, the pages are floating down. She has on some cute blue wedge sandals. A Black man stands at the bottom of the title in jeans and a blue t-shirt. He's grabbing one of the falling pages. The title is framed by rose vines.

Sneezy: Awww That’s just heart melting on top of being eye candy

Shana: That’s lovely, I hope it bodes well for more beautiful covers in her future

Amanda: I like all the nods to Beauty and the Beast and how the title casts a shadow!

Carrie: Ooo that’s lovely.

Elyse: I have shoe envy.

My vote goes to Jeff Manning’s SKIN OF THE SEA. It’s all about texture & light here: the warm skin breaking through the cold water, the gold gleam of the jewellery. Just gorgeous.

How quickly we forget Hedwig the owl from Harry Potter. Then again, given JK Rowling’s recent doings, it’s probably just as well.

(I LOOOOVE that Jasmine Guillory cover! SWOON. And CUTE. The only thing that would have made it better is that I initially thought the bottom hem of the guy’s ringer tee was actually that sexy bit of skin that appears when a tall guy in a tight tee raises his arms over his head. Such an unappreciated erogenous zone! But this is just fabric. I will survive because the rest of the cover is so awesome and this is but a quibble.)

If I walked by SKIN OF THE SEA in a bookstore, it would imnediately go into my basket, no questions asked, no synopsis read. There is no way a story doesn’t live up to a cover that gorgeous.

@Elyse, I own those shoes. DSW. On clearance.

The cover of Skin of the Sea is truly lovely!

Can’t quite share the love for Vial of Tears, I don’t like compositions where everything’s jumbled together with no spatial relationship. Just how exactly is that vase(?) not indenting the one woman’s back?

But yes, that is a gorgeous photo on A Misbegotten Match! The lady is so relaxed, she looks like she is the coolest thing on a very hot day.
