  • The Lord of Stariel

The Lord of Stariel by AJ Lancaster

RECOMMENDED: The Lord of Stariel by AJ Lancaster is FREE! Ellen gave it an A:

I adored this book and I NEEDED to tell the Bitchery about it. This is a whimsical, fun, sweet fantasy mystery with wonderful characters and a healthy dollop of romance.

The Lord of Stariel is dead. Long live the Lord of Stariel. Whoever that is.

Everyone knows who the magical estate will choose for its next ruler. Or do they?

Will it be the lord’s eldest son, who he despised?

His favourite nephew, with the strongest magical land-sense?

His scandalous daughter, who ran away from home years ago to study illusion?

Hetta knows it won’t be her, and she’s glad of it. Returning home for her father’s funeral, all Hetta has to do is survive the family drama and avoid entanglements with irritatingly attractive local men until the Choosing. Then she can leave.

But whoever Stariel chooses will have bigger problems than eccentric relatives to deal with.

    Winged, beautifully deadly problems.

For the first time in centuries, the fae are returning to the Mortal Realm, and only the Lord of Stariel can keep the estate safe.

    In theory.

The Lord of Stariel is the first book in the Stariel quartet.

  • A Touch of Stone and Snow

A Touch of Stone and Snow by Milla Vane

RECOMMENDED: A Tough of Stone and Snow by Milla Vane is $1.99! Aarya gave it an A:

A Touch of Stone and Snow is my new gold standard for fantasy romance. Please, I’m begging you — if you’re someone who loves fantasy/PNR settings, give this book a try. I love A Touch of Stone and Snow with all my heart and then some; I think you might, too.

Milla Vane returns to a world of kings, magic, and passion in her exhilarating A Gathering of Dragons series, as a great alliance forms to stand against an evil warlord intent on their destruction.

Danger lurks in the western realms. The Destroyer’s imminent return has sent the realms into turmoil as desperate citizens seek refuge—but there’s no safety to be found when demons and wraiths crawl out from the shadows. Even Koth, a northern island kingdom left untouched by the Destroyer a generation past, is besieged by terrors spawned from corrupt magics.

When Lizzan leads the Kothan army against these terrors, only to see her soldiers massacred and to emerge as the only survivor, she is called a coward and a deserter. Shunned from her home, Lizzan now wanders in solitude as a mercenary for hire, until she encounters a group of warriors seeking new alliances with the northern kingdoms—a group that includes Aerax, the bastard prince of Koth, and the man who sent her into exile.

Though they were childhood friends, Aerax cannot allow himself to be close to the only woman who might thwart his treacherous plan to save their island realm. But when a goddess’s demand binds them together, Lizzan and Aerax must find a way to overcome their painful pasts. Or there will be no future for the western realms…

  • Duke of My Heart

Duke of My Heart by Kelly Bowen

Duke of My Heart by Kelly Bowen is $1.99! The heroine in this historical romance is a fixer who tries to smooth over scandals. Some readers felt there was too much going on plot and character wise. But many loved the heroine. I’ve enjoyed Bowen’s books, but haven’t read this one.

    Scandal can be handled…
Captain Maximus Harcourt, the unconventional tenth Duke of Alderidge, can deal with tropical storms, raging seas, and the fiercest of pirates. But he’s returned home from his latest voyage to find a naked earl – quite inconveniently deceased – tied to his missing sister’s bed. And he has only one place to turn. Now he’s at the mercy of the captivating Miss Ivory Moore of Chegarre & Associates, known throughout London for smoothing over the most dire of scandals.

Miss Moore treats the crisis as though it were no more serious than a cup of spilt tea on an expensive rug. As though this sort of thing happened on the job every day. Max has never in all his life met a woman with such nerve. Her dark eyes are too wide, her mouth is too full, her cheekbones too sharp. Yet together, she’s somehow…flawless. It’s just like his love for her, imperfect, unexpected – yet absolutely true.

  • The Echo Wife

The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey

The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet. It’s a twist, sci-fi novella, but I’ve also heard it was a bit of a let down. Thoughts?

“When they said all happy families are alike, I don’t think this is what they meant…”

Evelyn Caldwell’s husband Nathan has been having an affair — with Evelyn Caldwell. Or, to be exact, with a genetically cloned replica.

After a morning that begins with a confrontation and ends with Nathan’s body bleeding out on the kitchen floor, the two Caldwell wives will have to think fast—before sharing everything includes sharing a jail cell.

The Echo Wife is a non-stop thrill ride of lies, betrayal, and identity, perfect for fans of Big Little Lies and Killing Eve.

The Lord of Stariel is such a cozy book. Perfect for a cold January night with hot chocolate.

  6. Carrie G says:

The entire Stariel series is worth reading. Well done world building and great characters. There is a nice romantic subplot going on as well. Recommended.

  7. Terrierhead says:

Can the Vane work as a stand-alone? I’m intrigued and the library doesn’t have it.

  8. Darlynne says:

@Jen: I finally took the second book off my wishlist, thinking a sale would never happen. Happy day and a one-click.

  9. Sharing this completely nepotistically, since my novella Snowspelled is part of this – the Book Queendom has a big Yuletide Sale of fantasy romances and romantic fantasies going on until the end of December 31st! (Everything there is either 99c, free, or on KU.)

  10. FashionablyEvil says:

Just want to say SNOWSPELLED is so so so good—the main characters have great chemistry and the fae are perfectly tricksy. I recommend it all the time. (My only complaint is that it’s too short—I want more time with Cassandra and Wrexham!)

Also, the Vane being on sale reminds me of this marvelous write up in Glamour about shooting the cover: At a Romance Cover Shoot, There’s No Such Thing As Too Much Wind Machine

I enjoyed the first book in Milla Vane’s series “ A Heart of Blood and Ashes” and read the 2nd book months later and was lost in parts.
