  • The Blacksmith Queen

The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken

RECOMMENDED: The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken is $2.99! This was my one pick for hilarious reading in our Ready Set Go. I also gave this an A-. Seriously, it’s so much fun:

The Blacksmith Queen is a bloody, feminist romp that exudes girl power in all forms, and I’m envious of its fantasy girl squad.

When a prophesy brings war to the Land of the Black Hills, Keeley Smythe must join forces with a clan of mountain warriors who are really centaurs in a thrilling new fantasy romance series from New York Times bestselling author G.A. Aiken.

    The Old King Is Dead

With the demise of the Old King, there’s a prophesy that a queen will ascend to the throne of the Black Hills. Bad news for the king’s sons, who are prepared to defend their birthright against all comers. But for blacksmith Keeley Smythe, war is great for business. Until it looks like the chosen queen will be Beatrix, her younger sister. Now it’s all Keeley can do to protect her family from the enraged royals.

Luckily, Keeley doesn’t have to fight alone. Because thundering to her aid comes a clan of kilt-wearing mountain warriors called the Amichai. Not the most socially adept group, but soldiers have never bothered Keeley, and rough, gruff Caid, actually seems to respect her. A good thing because the fierce warrior will be by her side for a much longer ride than any prophesy ever envisioned…

  • The Bittersweet Bride

The Bittersweet Bride by Vanessa Riley

The Bittersweet Bride by Vanessa Riley is 99c! This is the first book in the Advertisements for Love series and might have a whiff of a secret baby. But please correct me if I’m wrong. Readers warn this book is a bit bananas and has an Old Skool vibe. Would you agree?

Widow Theodosia Cecil needs a husband to help protect her son. The former flower seller turned estate owner posts an ad in the newspaper, and no one is more surprised than she when her first love, the man she thought dead, reappears.

Ewan Fitzwilliam has been at war for six years. Now, the second son of a powerful earl is back but his beloved Theo needs a husband and will not consider him. She believes Ewan left her—in desperate straits—so she denies the feelings she still harbors for the handsome, scarred soldier. Theo and playwright Ewan must overcome bitter lies and vengeful actions that ruined their youthful affair. Theo must reveal her deepest secret in order to reclaim the love that has long been denied.

  • Scandal Never Sleeps

Scandal Never Sleeps by Shayla Black

RECOMMENDEDScandal Never Sleeps by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake is $3.99! Elyse read this one and really enjoyed it, though she did find it hard to classify in terms of genre:

I was pleasantly surprised by Scandal Never Sleeps. It was the hot contemporary I wanted but with a side of delicious mystery, and I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next in Seduction in Session.

They are the Perfect Gentlemen of Creighton Academy: privileged, wealthy, powerful friends with a wild side. But a deadly scandal is about to tear down their seemingly ideal lives . . .

Maddox Crawford’s sudden death sends Gabriel Bond reeling. Not only is he burying his best friend, he’s cleaning up Mad’s messes, including his troubled company. Grieving and restless, Gabe escapes his worries in the arms of a beautiful stranger. But his mind-blowing one-night stand is about to come back to haunt him . . .

Mad groomed Everly Parker to be a rising star in the executive world. Now that he’s gone, she’s sure her job will be the next thing she mourns, especially after she ends up accidentally sleeping with her new boss. If only their night together hadn’t been so incendiary—or Gabe like a fantasy come true . . .

As Gabe and Everly struggle to control the heated tension between them, they discover evidence that Mad’s death was no accident. Now they must bank their smoldering passions to hunt down a murderer—because Mad had secrets that someone was willing to kill for, and Gabe or Everly could be the next target . . .

  • The Au Pair

The Au Pair by Emma Rous

The Au Pair by Emma Rous is $1.99! This is a Gothic mystery that Elyse read. She gave it a C+ with a bit of a caveat if you were looking to buy at full price:

I love Gothic mysteries and I love psychological thrillers, so I’m not disappointed I picked up The Au Pair. It certainly had me thinking about the gothic genre in new ways. The premise was excellent, but the end was a let down, and unless you’re a die-hard for the genre, this is probably a better library hold than a buy.

If V. C. Andrews and Kate Morton had a literary love child, Emma Rous’ The Au Pair would be it.

Seraphine Mayes and her twin brother, Danny, were born in the middle of summer at their family’s estate on the Norfolk coast. Within hours of their birth, their mother threw herself from the cliffs, the au pair fled, and the village thrilled with whispers of dark cloaks, changelings, and the aloof couple who drew a young nanny into their inner circle.

Now an adult, Seraphine mourns the recent death of her father. While going through his belongings, she uncovers a family photograph that raises dangerous questions. It was taken on the day the twins were born, and in the photo, their mother, surrounded by her husband and her young son, is smiling serenely and holding just one baby.

Who is the child, and what really happened that day?

Georgette Heyer’s ARABELLA is a $1.99 KDD today. For old ladies like me, for whom Heyer was the ne plus ultra of historical romance, to read the blurb, “If you love Bridgerton, you’ll love Georgette Heyer,” is just another indication that every generation selects its own standard bearers.

  2. hng23 says:

THE BLACKSMITH QUEEN is a great romp. I can also recommend the sequel THE PRINCESS KNIGHT. Right now those are the only two books in the series, so I’m hoping there will be more at some point, because they are highly enjoyable.

  3. Jaye says:

If you have Amazon prime, you can borrow The Princess Knight (The Scarred Earth Saga Book 2) by G.A. Aiken

  4. Penny says:

KNIT, PURL, A BABY AND A GIRL is $1.99 on kobo and kindle – I’ve been meaning to pick this one up. Got a C+ https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/reviews/knit-purl-a-baby-and-a-girl-by-hettie-bell/
But sounds like the knitting circle and body positivity will make it a worthwhile read for me!

  5. The Other Kate says:

The Au Pair was a great suspense read, but I felt deeply uncomfortable with some of the revelations. Without spoiling the mystery, I would give the following content warning: It includes men using their paternity as a means to control the women they impregnated, in frighteningly plausible ways.

  6. Runaway Shinobi says:

Cliffs in Norfolk? Dunes and big beaches, sure, but cliffs?

  7. MarieK says:

I bet the Au Pair takes place in Norfolk, England, not Norfolk, Virginia. The red and white Hunstanton Cliffs are in Norfolk, UK, as are others.

  8. Jill-Marie says:

I just grabbed the Aiken via Audible. Not on sale there, but I did have a credit crying to be used.

I so, so love her dragon series.

  9. Merm8fan says:

@RunawayShinobi – there was a newsworthy (at least for BBC) cliff collapse last year in Hunstanton, Norfolk. So there are definitely cliffs in that area.

  10. Lisa L says:

Thanks @hng23 I didn’t know there was a sequel to Blacksmith Queen! I definitely add my voice to the recommendations for that one.
