  • The Night Tiger

The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo

The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo is $2.99! This was a previous Hide Your Wallet pick for me, as I loved Choo’s The Ghost Bride. It’s a mix of historical fiction, mythology, romance, and magical realism. Have you read this one?

A sweeping historical novel about a dancehall girl and an orphan boy whose fates entangle over an old Chinese superstition about men who turn into tigers.

When 11-year-old Ren’s master dies, he makes one last request of his Chinese houseboy: that Ren find his severed finger, lost years ago in an accident, and reunite it with his body. Ren has 49 days, or else his master’s soul will roam the earth, unable to rest in peace.

Ji Lin always wanted to be a doctor, but as a girl in 1930s Malaysia, apprentice dressmaker is a more suitable occupation. Secretly, though, Ji Lin also moonlights as a dancehall girl to help pay off her beloved mother’s Mahjong debts. One night, Ji Lin’s dance partner leaves her with a gruesome souvenir: a severed finger. Convinced the finger is bad luck, Ji Lin enlists the help of her erstwhile stepbrother to return it to its rightful owner.

As the 49 days tick down, and a prowling tiger wreaks havoc on the town, Ji Lin and Ren’s lives intertwine in ways they could never have imagined. Propulsive and lushly written, The Night Tiger explores colonialism and independence, ancient superstition and modern ambition, sibling rivalry and first love. Braided through with Chinese folklore and a tantalizing mystery, this novel is a page-turner of the highest order.

  • Grave Mercy

    Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers is $1.99! This is a YA fantasy novel and Michelle wrote this in her RITA Reader Challenge Review:

The biggest reason I picked up Grave Mercy originally was because of the assassin nuns. Because come on, how awesome does “assassin nuns” sound?

Here, she’s created a fantastic medieval world of gods, saints, political intrigue, and romance that swept me away completely.

And yes, the assassin nuns were pretty much as great as they sounded.

Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

  • Truth or Beard

Truth or Beard by Penny Reid

Truth or Beard by Penny Reid is 99c! This is part of today’s KDD, which also include the complete Binti trilogy! I know Reid is an auto-buy author for many of you and this one has an enemies to lovers feel to it, judging by the description. Readers say it has Reid’s trademark humor and quirkiness, but warn there’s a scene where the hero is with another woman. I know that’s an off button for some, but Reader Katie Lynn explained that it isn’t a form of cheating.

Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!

Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level-headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life.

His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.

Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?

  • What If?

    What If? by Randall Munroe

What If? by Randall Munroe is $2.99! Munroe is the creator of the popular webcomic xkcd. I also spent a very interesting New Year’s Eve hanging out with Randall and his wife and friends. Anyway, this, as the subtitle says, is Munroe’s attempt to realistically answer some wild hypothetical questions. However, I’ve seen this book in person and that might be a better format digitally.

From the creator of the wildly popular webcomic xkcd, hilarious and informative answers to important questions you probably never thought to ask.

Millions of people visit xkcd.com each week to read Randall Munroe’s iconic webcomic. His stick-figure drawings about science, technology, language, and love have a large and passionate following.

Fans of xkcd ask Munroe a lot of strange questions. What if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90 percent the speed of light? How fast can you hit a speed bump while driving and live? If there was a robot apocalypse, how long would humanity last?

In pursuit of answers, Munroe runs computer simulations, pores over stacks of declassified military research memos, solves differential equations, and consults with nuclear reactor operators. His responses are masterpieces of clarity and hilarity, complemented by signature xkcd comics. They often predict the complete annihilation of humankind, or at least a really big explosion.

The book features new and never-before-answered questions, along with updated and expanded versions of the most popular answers from the xkcd website. What If? will be required reading for xkcd fans and anyone who loves to ponder the hypothetical.

Some TWs apply to The Night Tiger. This review outlines some issues around consent with the romance: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2731079685

  2. ten-four says:

My tween daughter ADORES “What If” – highly recommend to all parents of the youths! We do have the hardback though, which probably is a better format for this type of book.

  3. Dee says:

Grave Mercy should totally be in a Cover Awe if it has not already. Wow.

  4. Kareni says:

Funnily enough, my book group will be discussing The Night Tiger tonight. It was an enjoyable read. (And that is often NOT the case with the books my group selects!)

  5. Kareni says:

And another vote for What If?

  6. Lostshadows says:

I reread What If? at the beginning of the year. I’d probably buy it in paper, but it might depend what you read ebooks on.

Can’t see it working on my Paperwhite, but could see it working okay on my tablet.

  7. Bre says:

I clicked to purchase Grave Mercy and it turns out I bought that book back in 2014. I guess I bought it and didn’t read it. Time to bump it up on my Kindle list

  8. Lisa F says:

Night Tiger and Truth or Beard were both good! I’d rank them around a B+

  9. Vicki says:

I loved Grave Mercy, indeed, the series. I have reread all of them several times. May be time for another reread. I do recommend. It is interesting to watch the girls mature, to see how their understanding of Death evolves and puts them in conflict with the “establishment,” that is the nuns that run the convent. Plus the romantic subplots. TW for abuse, especially in the third book. I also saw an interview with the author and she did a a lot of research into that time period in France.

  10. HeatherS says:

@Dee: I have to say that I really preferred the original cover for “Grave Mercy” to this one. I also read all 3 books and I think this one, the first, is the strongest of the lot.

  11. Kareni says:

My book group discussed The Night Tiger last night. It’s rare for everyone in my group to like a given book, but it happened this time.
