  • Witchmark

    Witchmark by C.L. Polk

Witchmark by C.L. Polk is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, which also feature a lot of romance! This is the first in an alternate history fantasy romance series and Aarya gave it a B- in a Lightning Review:

If you’re looking for a thoughtful and romantic fantasy with nuanced worldbuilding, then I recommend Witchmark.

    C. L. Polk arrives on the scene with Witchmark, a stunning, addictive fantasy that combines intrigue, magic, betrayal, and romance.

In an original world reminiscent of Edwardian England in the shadow of a World War, cabals of noble families use their unique magical gifts to control the fates of nations, while one young man seeks only to live a life of his own.

Magic marked Miles Singer for suffering the day he was born, doomed either to be enslaved to his family’s interest or to be committed to a witches’ asylum. He went to war to escape his destiny and came home a different man, but he couldn’t leave his past behind. The war between Aeland and Laneer leaves men changed, strangers to their friends and family, but even after faking his own death and reinventing himself as a doctor at a cash-strapped veterans’ hospital, Miles can’t hide what he truly is.

When a fatally poisoned patient exposes Miles’ healing gift and his witchmark, he must put his anonymity and freedom at risk to investigate his patient’s murder. To find the truth he’ll need to rely on the family he despises, and on the kindness of the most gorgeous man he’s ever seen.

  • A Sweet Mess

A Sweet Mess by Jayci Lee

A Sweet Mess by Jayci Lee is $2.99! This is a contemporary romance with a heroine who runs a bakery. Bakers in romance are my damn weakness. However, I’ve seen mainly middling reviews of this one. Have you read it? What’d you think?

Korean-American author Jayci Lee delights with this delicious and light-hearted romantic comedy that readers will devour and ask for more.

Aubrey Choi loves living in her small town nestled in the foothills of California, running her highly successful bakery away from the watch of her strict Korean parents. When a cake mix-up and a harsh review threaten all of her hard work and her livelihood, she never thought the jaded food critic would turn out to be her one-night stand. And she sure as hell never thought she’d see the gorgeous Korean hunk again. But when Landon Kim waltzes into her bakery trying to clean up the mess he had a huge hand in making, Aubrey is torn between throwing and hearing him out.

When she hears his plan to help save her business, Aubrey knows that spending three weeks in California wine country working with Landon is a sure recipe for disaster. Her head is telling her to take the chance to save her bakery while her heart—and her hormones—are at war on whether to give him a second chance. And it just so happens that Landon’s meddling friends want them to spend those three weeks as close as possible…by sharing a villa.

When things start heating up, both in and out of the kitchen, Aubrey will have to make a choice—to stick it out or risk her heart.

  • The Empress of Salt and Fortune

The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo

The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo is $2.99! I saw a few tweets about this one by the book’s editor and I wanted to include those quotes here because HELLO:

“Angry mothers raise daughters fierce enough to fight wolves.”

For less than a cup of coffee learn how the war was won by the fury of the nameless & silenced women.

With the heart of an Atwood tale and the visuals of a classic Asian period drama The Empress of Salt and Fortune is a tightly and lushly written narrative about empire, storytelling, and the anger of women.

A young royal from the far north is sent south for a political marriage. Alone and sometimes reviled, she has only her servants on her side. This evocative debut chronicles her rise to power through the eyes of her handmaiden, at once feminist high fantasy and a thrilling indictment of monarchy.

  • The Right Sort of Man

The Right Sort of Man by Allison Montclair

The Right Sort of Man by Allison Montclair is $2.99! This is the first book in the Sparks & Bainbridge Mysteries series and if you’re looking for a new historical mystery series to try, this could be it. I’m particularly drawn to the promise of female friendship here! (Would also love it if they fell in love.)

In London, 1946, the two women who recently started The Right Sort Marriage Bureau find their new livelihood endangered when one client is arrested for the murder of another.

In a London slowly recovering from the ravages of World War II, two very different women join forces to launch a business venture in the heart of Mayfair—The Right Sort Marriage Bureau. Miss Iris Sparks, avuncular and unmarried, and Mrs. Gwendolyn Bainbridge, practical and widowed with a young son, are determined to achieve some independence and do some good in a rapidly changing world.

But the promising start to their marriage bureau is threatened when their newest client, Tillie La Salle, is found murdered and the man arrested for the crime is one Dickie Trower, the prospective husband they matched her with. While the police are convinced they have their man, Miss Sparks and Mrs. Bainbridge are not. To clear Trower’s name—and to rescue their fledging operation’s reputation—Sparks and Bainbridge decide to investigate on their own, using the skills and contacts they’ve each acquired through life and their individual adventures during the recent war.

In this charming, compelling mystery, Allison Montclair blends meticulous research with two brilliantly imagined main characters into the first in a wonderful new series.

  1. Moriah says:

The Right Sort of Man is great as well as the follow-up A Royal Affair. I got to read an advanced copy of A Rogue’s Company which I loved. Great characters and the post WWII period isn’t as well represented as other periods in historical mystery series.

  2. MirandaB says:

FYI, one of the female leads in Right Sort is (knowingly) having an affair with a married man. Due to some childhood things, this is a HUGE turnoff for me, and I quit the book immediately after finding that out. YMMV.

  3. Ellie says:

I really liked both of the first two books in The Right Sort of Man series, and am anxiously awaiting book three. I thought the sex was rather refreshing because it’s rare in cozies and historical mysteries to have any kind of sex, let alone unapologetic promiscuity. Phryne Fisher is the only other series that comes to mind and it’s nice to have characters who aren’t trying to be Pollyanna Cleaver.
On that note, has there been a Rec League on promiscuous non-courtesan historical heroines? Nothing against courtesans, of course, only that I have seen several of those and what I really want is for the much maligned older merry widow to have a story.

  4. Lisa F says:

Empress of Salt and Fortune is MIND-BLOWINGLY good. Trust me on this. I’ve read Vo’s latest and it is also incredible.

  5. Arijo says:

Seconding Empress of Salt and Fortune. Loved how we got glimpses of the story until we could form a picture of it.

Witchmark made me incredibly angry. It’s full of entitled old men abusing the vulnerables and they don’t get their comeuppance. Just thinking about it and I’m getting angry all over again. We get enough of that in RL, I don’t want it in my romance novels.

  6. omphale says:

A Sweet Mess was pretty enjoyable until the three quarters mark where both protags forget how to use their words and are separated for no very good reason.

I’ve had this problem with Jayci Lee’s work before: great characters, convincing romance and then, BAM, out of nowhere crisis that neither character handles in a way consistent to their characterization.

It’s a shame too, because if she ever figures out how to finish her books without making me want to throttle one or both of the leads, she could easily be a an auto read.
