  • The Binding

    The Binding by Bridget Collins

The Binding by Bridget Collins is $2.99! This is a queer historical fantasy for book lovers (book binding plays a large part of the story). However, I’m uncertain if there’s any HEA involved with the romantic subplot. Definitely check the comments below or Goodreads reviews for that info!

    Imagine you could erase grief.
    Imagine you could remove pain.
Imagine you could hide the darkest, most horrifying secret.
    Forever.

Young Emmett Farmer is working in the fields when a strange letter arrives summoning him away from his family. He is to begin an apprenticeship as a Bookbinder—a vocation that arouses fear, superstition, and prejudice amongst their small community, but one neither he nor his parents can afford to refuse.

For as long as he can recall, Emmett has been drawn to books, even though they are strictly forbidden. Bookbinding is a sacred calling, Seredith informs her new apprentice, and he is a binder born. Under the old woman’s watchful eye, Emmett learns to hand-craft the elegant leather-bound volumes. Within each one they will capture something unique and extraordinary: a memory. If there’s something you want to forget, a binder can help. If there’s something you need to erase, they can assist. Within the pages of the books they create, secrets are concealed and the past is locked away. In a vault under his mentor’s workshop rows upon rows of books are meticulously stored.

But while Seredith is an artisan, there are others of their kind, avaricious and amoral tradesman who use their talents for dark ends—and just as Emmett begins to settle into his new circumstances, he makes an astonishing discovery: one of the books has his name on it. Soon, everything he thought he understood about his life will be dramatically rewritten.

An unforgettable novel of enchantment, mystery, memory, and forbidden love, The Binding is a beautiful homage to the allure and life-changing power of books—and a reminder to us all that knowledge can be its own kind of magic.

  • Monster, She Wrote

Monster, She Wrote by Lisa Kroger

RECOMMENDED: Monster She Wrote by Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson is $2.99! Carrie loved this one and gave it an A:

I can’t emphasize enough how well this collection hits the sweet spot of fun (Quotes! Illustrations! Anecdotes! Humor!) and informative. I will be using this book as a resource frequently.

Meet the women writers who defied convention to craft some of literature’s strangest tales, from Frankenstein to The Haunting of Hill House and beyond.

Frankenstein was just the beginning: horror stories and other weird fiction wouldn’t exist without the women who created it. From Gothic ghost stories to psychological horror to science fiction, women have been primary architects of speculative literature of all sorts. And their own life stories are as intriguing as their fiction. Everyone knows about Mary Shelley, creator of Frankenstein, who was rumored to keep her late husband’s heart in her desk drawer. But have you heard of Margaret “Mad Madge” Cavendish, who wrote a science-fiction epic 150 years earlier (and liked to wear topless gowns to the theater)? If you know the astounding work of Shirley Jackson, whose novel The Haunting of Hill House was reinvented as a Netflix series, then try the psychological hauntings of Violet Paget, who was openly involved in long-term romantic relationships with women in the Victorian era. You’ll meet celebrated icons (Ann Radcliffe, V. C. Andrews), forgotten wordsmiths (Eli Colter, Ruby Jean Jensen), and today’s vanguard (Helen Oyeyemi). Curated reading lists point you to their most spine-chilling tales.

Part biography, part reader’s guide, the engaging write-ups and detailed reading lists will introduce you to more than a hundred authors and over two hundred of their mysterious and spooky novels, novellas, and stories.

  • Subversive

    Subversive by Colleen Cowley

RECOMMENDED: Subversive by Colleen Cowley is $2.99 at Amazon! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B+:

Subversive is the first book in the Clandestine Magic trilogy and when I finished it I immediately one-clicked the next two books. Subversive ends on a cliffhanger so be prepared to rush to the next book, which also ends on a cliffhanger, before wrapping everything up at the trilogy’s end.

In an America controlled by wizards and 100 years behind on women’s rights, Beatrix Harper counts herself among the resistance—the Women’s League for the Prohibition of Magic. Then Peter Blackwell, the only wizard her town has ever produced, unexpectedly returns home and presses her into service as his assistant.

Beatrix fears he wants to undermine the League. His real purpose is far more dangerous for them both.

Subversive is the first novel in the Clandestine Magic trilogy, set in a warped 21st century that will appeal to fans of gaslamp fantasy.

  • The Anatomist’s Wife

The Anatomist’s Wife by Anna Lee Huber

The Anatomist’s Wife by Anna Lee Huber is $1.99! This is a historical mystery that we tend to recommend to readers who want Deanna Raybourn or Lady Sherlock read-alikes. If you loved this series or Huber’s books, keep a look at as Sarah as an upcoming podcast episode with the author.

Scotland, 1830. Following the death of her husband, Lady Darby has taken refuge at her sister’s estate, finding solace in her passion for painting. But when her hosts throw a house party for the cream of London society, Kiera is unable to hide from the ire of those who believe her to be as unnatural as her husband, an anatomist who used her artistic talents to suit his own macabre purposes.

Kiera wants to put her past aside, but when one of the house guests is murdered, her brother-in-law asks her to utilize her knowledge of human anatomy to aid the insufferable Sebastian Gage—a fellow guest with some experience as an inquiry agent. While Gage is clearly more competent than she first assumed, Kiera isn’t about to let her guard down as accusations and rumors swirl.

When Kiera and Gage’s search leads them to even more gruesome discoveries, a series of disturbing notes urges Lady Darby to give up the inquiry. But Kiera is determined to both protect her family and prove her innocence, even as she risks becoming the next victim…

  1. Shelby says:

The romance in The Binding does have an HEA!

  2. Carrie G says:

I’m a big fan of the Anna Lee Huber Lady Darby series. I like that the romantic arc moved along at a good pace and resolved leaving the pair to work together instead of creating “will they-won’t they” angst. The writing is good and the mysteries are well done.

  3. Jennifer in FL says:

Carrie G- Yes! That was one thing I also enjoyed about the Lady Darby series! I also appreciated that the trauma Lady Darby’s husband inflicted on her was thoughtfully explored over several volumes. She wasn’t magically better all of the sudden.

I want to echo the praise for Monster, She Wrote! I can’t say that I’m a huge fan of the horror/gothic horror genres, but I found this book fascinating, even if I will never read most of the books talked about.

  4. Arijo says:

I discovered a New Thing while perusing the kindle daily deals : while looking at “Elsewhere” by Dean Koontz, I noticed the cover moving right at the edge of my vision. It was so cool! Is Kindle in Motion a new thing? It’s the first time I noticed it. A whole new range for cover awe / cover snark! ^^ It seems to have the equivalent of animated gifs inside the books too.

  5. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Arijo: Animated motion on covers? You know where my mind went, right?

  6. Arijo says:

@DiscoDollyDeb: LOL! I don’t know where your mind went, but your comment sent mine down happy thrusty paths <3

  7. LML says:

Before I start a series I expect to enjoy, I consult my budget by considering purchase price of the entire series. In the Lady Darby series, the first e-book is on sale. The 2nd, 5th, 7th and 9th are $11.99; the 3rd and 4th are $6.99; and the 6th is $9.99.

Who makes these prices up? Is someone at the publishing house throwing darts at a circle of price points? Are prices related to editorial reviews? A gentle incline accompanying recent publishing dates I would expect, but zig-zagging around puzzles me, and is not unique to this series.

  8. Vivi12 says:

@LML, I agree completely! I certainly don’t see any logic to the pricing pattern. And why will the $1.99 one be the third rather than the first, to draw you in? I sometimes wonder if certain books are that much better, or worse, than others in the series.

  9. Melissa says:

The romance in The Binding does technically have an HEA, but it’s a rough ride getting there—lots of homophobia and abuse and violence to arrive at a conclusion that, although happy, is very open-ended. It’s still a lovely book, but it’s definitely sadder and heavier than a typical fantasy romance.

  10. Lisa F says:

I was going to add just what Melissa said – I think I rated it around a B, for all of those reasons, when I reviewed it.

Monster, She Wrote is my pick!
