Links: Ferrets, Kate Bush, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Hi there! February is coming to an end. Are y’all ready? I know in New England, February tends to be the worst month for winter. It’s just icy and gross and I hate it.

Also, I want to extend a big thank you to the Bitchery for interacting and being part of these Links posts every Wednesday. Sarah and I started this feature on a whim and it’s been really great to exchange cool internet things.

Science prevails again by cloning and (hopefully) saving a species of ferret from extinction. Best wishes to Elizabeth Ann the black-footed ferret!

Is anyone wearing makeup anymore? I don’t mind wearing masks and my skin has been pretty clear since there’s no point to foundation. However, I do miss lipstick and rocking a winged eyeliner. If you also miss makeup, let me introduce you to Necromancy Cosmetica and their new Gothic Romance collection.

While I do not have children, I found this McSweeney’s piece, “The UX On This Small Child Is Terrible” to be hilarious. I’m sure those of you who are going through this pandemic with kids at home will enjoy it even more than I did.

Sarah and I play Stardew Valley on Twitch twice a week. It’s very relaxing and I personally highly recommend the game. But did you know there’s a tabletop board game version now too?!

Let’s cap these links off today with Kate Bush as birds. Tag yourself, I’m #11.

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

There’s a sort-of-conference on Georgette Heyer’s work and lasting impact tomorrow, hosted from the UK (sorry, US’ians), with a bunch of interesting speakers. Lois McMaster Bujold, Joanne Harris and others are scheduled

Jayne over at DA had an article about the ferrets the other day with mentions in the post and comments about SBTB’s take down of Cassie Edwards. Has it really been that long ago? But congrats to Elizabeth Ann, she’s a cutie.

And I still follow the link from last summer about the rescued baby sea otter at the Vancouver Aquarium. He’s mostly grown up now and hanging with the big kids. But fun when I need a few minutes of chill.

Sorry, didn’t mean to embed the video. Can you change it to a link?

  4. Darlynne says:

I went down a Bridgerton rabbit hole, thanks to the great five-part discussion at DA, and finally watched the Rege-Jean Page SNL skits. Which led to interviews, which led to behind-the-scenes, and hasn’t stopped yet. What astonishing actors they all are, but I have to give props to Page for being so multi-talented. What can’t this man do and who cares anyway?

Not just this week specifically, but recently I’ve been really into the kdrama Mr. Queen. An arrogant male chef from 2020 is in an accident & wakes up in the body of a 19th century queen. I was a little skeptical at first because in my experience kdramas don’t have the best queer rep, but this might be one of the queerest shows I’ve ever seen (my friend & I text about what we’re watching and on Mr. Queen day it usually devolves into texting GAY back & forth.) Played by a cis actress, he flirts openly with all the palace maids & concubines, but he starts to develop feelings for his husband, too, & he doesn’t know if it’s just the hormones of his new body or something else. Somehow, even when it’s the cis actress & actor together on screen, it still feels super queer. There’s all kinds of intrigue & comedy & I just love it so much. Oh, also, there’s food porn.

I first read about the little ferret last weekend. My given name is Elizabeth Ann, so I was excited to see her name. I’m hopeful that she will be the start of some important genetic diversity in the population.

  7. Cleo says:

I’m a UX / user experience designer and that McSweeny’s article is hilarious.

  8. Kris Bock says:

Elizabeth Ann is so cute! And it’s not only saving a ferret species, it’s saving THE ferret species, the only wild ferret in North america. Pet ferrets were domesticated from the European polecat thousands of years ago. (They are also cute. I have two.)

Here’s an adorable video featuring two baby members of another branch of the weasel family, stoats:

Enjoying the ferrets and stoats cuteness ♡ good luck out there in the wild, little ones

    I like the links 🙂
To answer one question, no, I hardly ever wear makeup* anymore. Only when we have a Zoom thing for the office (as we do today). Had to throw out some of my liquid eyeliner because it ceased to be liquid.

New Zealand just rolled out providing sanitary supplies for menstruators in schools to end period poverty!
