  • The Silence of Bones

The Silence of Bones by June Hur

RECOMMENDED: The Silence of Bones by June Hur is $2.99! Ellen reviewed this one in September and gave it an A:

I thought this book was amazing. I loved the prose, the characters, the mystery, and the setting. From a craft perspective I found this book masterful, and it took me on an intense emotional journey. I think this is a literal must-read for historical mystery fans provided they do not mind some violence.

June Hur’s elegant and haunting debut The Silence of Bones is a bloody YA historical mystery tale perfect for fans of Kerri Maniscalco and Renée Ahdieh.

    I have a mouth, but I mustn’t speak;
    Ears, but I mustn’t hear;
    Eyes, but I mustn’t see.

1800, Joseon (Korea). Homesick and orphaned sixteen-year-old Seol is living out the ancient curse: “May you live in interesting times.” Indentured to the police bureau, she’s been tasked with assisting a well-respected young inspector with the investigation into the politically charged murder of a noblewoman.

As they delve deeper into the dead woman’s secrets, Seol forms an unlikely bond of friendship with the inspector. But her loyalty is tested when he becomes the prime suspect, and Seol may be the only one capable of discovering what truly happened on the night of the murder.

But in a land where silence and obedience are valued above all else, curiosity can be deadly.

  • Silver in the Wood

Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh

RECOMMENDED: Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh is $1.99! Catherine loved this one and gave it a squee grade:

I honestly can’t think of a single flaw in the story. If you love fairy tales and myths, and want to read a story that will transport you into the woods and leave you feeling like maybe a part of you is still rooted there, or wandering lost under its branches, then this is the book for you.

“A true story of the woods, of the fae, and of the heart. Deep and green and wonderful.”—New York Times bestselling author Naomi Novik

There is a Wild Man who lives in the deep quiet of Greenhollow, and he listens to the wood. Tobias, tethered to the forest, does not dwell on his past life, but he lives a perfectly unremarkable existence with his cottage, his cat, and his dryads.

When Greenhollow Hall acquires a handsome, intensely curious new owner in Henry Silver, everything changes. Old secrets better left buried are dug up, and Tobias is forced to reckon with his troubled past—both the green magic of the woods, and the dark things that rest in its heart.

  • Act Like It

Act Like It by Lucy Parker

RECOMMENDED: Act Like It by Lucy Parker is $1.99! It has a new cover, though I missed the happy couple on the old one. If you haven’t read this yet, it was one of Sarah’s favorite reads in the past couple years. She says, “I mean, I could squee at you some MORE beyond my review but I think you’ve heard me already. I loved this book. You should read it. It’s delightful.”

This just in: romance takes center stage as West End theatre’s Richard Troy steps out with none other than castmate Elaine Graham

Richard Troy used to be the hottest actor in London, but the only thing firing up lately is his temper. We all love to love a bad boy, but Richard’s antics have made him Enemy Number One, breaking the hearts of fans across the city.

Have the tides turned? Has English rose Lainie Graham made him into a new man?

Sources say the mismatched pair has been spotted at multiple events, arm in arm and hip to hip. From fits of jealousy to longing looks and heated whispers, onlookers are stunned by this blooming romance.

Could the rumors be right? Could this unlikely romance be the real thing? Or are these gifted stage actors playing us all?

  • Mangos and Mistletoe

Mangos and Mistletoe by Adriana Herrera

Mangos and Mistletoe by Adriana Herrera is 99c! This is a F/F holiday romance set during a baking competition. Aarya reviewed this one and gave it a B-:

It wasn’t a perfect read for me, but Mangos & Mistletoe is the perfect read for when you find a moment of rest during holiday chaos.

Kiskeya Burgos left the tropical beaches of the Dominican Republic with a lot to prove. As a pastry chef on the come up, when she arrives in Scotland, she has one goal in mind: win the Holiday Baking Challenge. Winning is her opportunity to prove to her family, her former boss, and most importantly herself, she can make it in the culinary world. Kiskeya will stop at nothing to win , that is, if she can keep her eyes on the prize and off her infuriating teammate’s perfect lips.

Sully Morales, home cooking hustler, and self-proclaimed baking brujita lands in Scotland on a quest to find her purpose after spending years as her family’s caregiver. But now, with her home life back on track, it’s time for Sully to get reacquainted with her greatest love, baking. Winning the Holiday Baking Challenge is a no brainer if she can convince her grumpy AF baking partner that they make a great team both in and out of the kitchen before an unexpected betrayal ends their chance to attain culinary competition glory.

  1. Carrie G says:

Just FYI, I found The Greenhollow Duology, which includes both novellas, Silver in the Wood and Drowned Country, on audio (together in one recording) through my library (Hoopla). The narrator is Matthew Lloyd Davies who is excellent. You can check if your library carries it, since each library is different.

  2. Bre says:

Act Like It is my go to comfort read. I read it at least twice a year. Netflix needs to purchase the movie rights. Just sayin…

  3. Ak26 says:

Amazon thinks I don’t already own Act Like It, because of the new cover? Smh.

  4. Pear says:

It looks like Mangos & Mistletoe is also on Kobo! I will follow Aarya’s instructions to stock up on baked goods before reading.

  5. LML says:

I read Act Like It when Sarah first squeed and it was … fine. Over the weekend I read Artistic License by Elle Pierson (recommended here) and found it delightful. The characters seemed like people who might walk into your life and the setting -cliché alert- jumped off the page and made me want to visit Central Otago. Author Elle Pierson is Lucy Parker, so you might enjoy Artistic License if you’re looking for something new.

  6. Ren Benton says:

My wish list has acquired malicious sentience, and everything is going to be on sale while I can’t buy anything. Today’s new price drop:

ESCAPING EXODUS by Nicky Drayden is $1.99. From the editorial reviews: “imagine a feminist, Afro-centric, queer Heinlein juvenile, with a strong discussion of class politics” and “what it would be like if the Millennium Falcon decided to live inside that asteroid worm.”

  7. claudia (the other one) says:

I loved Mangos and Mistletoe, and Act Like It!

  8. Jill-Marie says:

I very much enjoyed “Act Like It” as audiobook (my usual way to “read” BC — before COVID — because of my commute time). In current pandemic realities, I’ve rediscovered the joy of actually READING a book, so may well need to add this one to my print or Kindle library.

  9. Sydneysider says:

I liked Act Like It and the rest of the London Celebrities series.

  10. Vivi12 says:

I love Act Like It, my favorite of the London Celebrities, and might like to have a paper copy for my bookshelf. I’ve been saving the most recent one, Headliners, for an emergency.
