    Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is $4.99! It’s part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. It’s a little higher than the sales we normally feature, but less than $5 for this book is still an amazing price. Have you read it? We also recommended it in our Horror Romance Rec League.

From the author of Gods of Jade and Shadow comes a reimagining of the classic gothic suspense novel, a story about an isolated mansion in 1950s Mexico — and the brave socialite drawn to its treacherous secrets.

He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find — her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough, smart, and has an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

  • The Proposal

    The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory

The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory is $3.99! This is another book in today’s Kindle Daily Deals. Speaking to other romance readers, I feel like a lot of those I know liked this one more than The Wedding Date. What do you think?

From the author of The Wedding Date comes a new novel about the perils of public proposals and the beauty of an unexpected second chance.

When Nik Paterson went to the Dodgers game with her C-list actor boyfriend, Ford, for his birthday, she expected nothing more than a few boring hours with him and his bros. She certainly didn’t expect a Jumbotron proposal. Or her name to be misspelled. Or to go viral in minutes…

Carlos Ibarra wants to hang out with his sister, catch a Dodgers game, and relax for once. But when a camera crew descends on Nik after the disastrous proposal, he has to rescue her. After they flee the stadium, he delivers her into the arms of her supportive girlfriends, and they both think they’ll never see each other again.

Fate has other plans. Nik and Carlos keep crossing paths, accidentally and on purpose. When they finally give in to their attraction to each other, they are on the same page: sex and nothing more. But the proposed friends-with-benefits relationship is turning into something more, and the pair have to decide if they have room in their lives for love.

  • Mess with Me

Mess with Me by Nicole Helm

Mess with Me by Nicole Helm is $2.99! And this is definitely a cover I can get behind…or in front of…or under. Some found this book didn’t have the same feel as Helm’s other romances, which threw them for a loop. But, if you like grumpy reclusive heroes, you might want to give this one a shot.

In Gracely, Colorado, it’s all about the climb—into the rugged Rocky Mountains, and over the obstacles that life has thrown in your way. With the right partner, the view from the top is grand . . .

Sam Goodall knows how to hide. And in the years since his sister’s death, he’s done just that, burying himself in his work at the Evans brothers’ Mile High Adventures as a backpacking guide. Clients don’t mind his strong, silent demeanor, and he’s happy to leave the rest of the world behind when he’s hiking, or holed up in the off-grid cabin he calls home. But he owes his life—what there is of it—to the Evans boys, and when they ask for a favor, he can’t refuse.

Hayley Winthrop is looking for something she’s never had—a true sense of family, and a purpose. Finding her half brothers was the first step—discovering where she belongs in the world is the next. Could it be in the fresh air of small-town Gracely? With hunky Sam agreeing to train her as an outdoors guide, she’s torn between exploring her newfound skills and getting closer to him. But chipping away at the walls around Sam could take a lifetime . . .

Sam is stuck in the past, and Hayley is looking toward her future—they’re a mismatched pair from the start. But the connection between them right now is too good to let go . . .

  • Goldilocks

    Goldilocks by Laura Lam

RECOMMENDED: Goldilocks by Laura Lam is $2.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B+:

If you are in the mood for a female-centric political and scientific and familial thriller/drama set in a space, here you go. Don’t skip the Acknowledgements, which includes a fabulous reading list for more reading.

The Earth is in environmental collapse. The future of humanity hangs in the balance. But a team of women are preparing to save it. Even if they’ll need to steal a spaceship to do it.

Despite increasing restrictions on the freedoms of women on Earth, Valerie Black is spearheading the first all-female mission to a planet in the Goldilocks Zone, where conditions are just right for human habitation.

The team is humanity’s last hope for survival, and Valerie has gathered the best women for the mission: an ace pilot who is one of the only astronauts ever to have gone to Mars; a brilliant engineer tasked with keeping the ship fully operational; and an experienced doctor to keep the crew alive. And then there’s Naomi Lovelace, Valerie’s surrogate daughter and the ship’s botanist, who has been waiting her whole life for an opportunity to step out of Valerie’s shadow and make a difference.

The problem is that they’re not the authorized crew, even if Valerie was the one to fully plan the voyage. When their mission is stolen from them, they steal the ship bound for the new planet.

But when things start going wrong on board, Naomi begins to suspect that someone is concealing a terrible secret — and realizes time for life on Earth may be running out faster than they feared . . .

Goldilocks is a bold and thought-provoking new thriller for readers of The Martian and The Handmaid’s Tale.

  1. Pear says:

The Proposal is my favorite Guillory so far, I love Carlos & Nik and I actually have read it twice since it came out. I did like The Wedding Date, though I think there are some first novel kinds of issues around pacing and conflict that she didn’t have in The Proposal.

  2. Melanie says:

The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish is free on Amazon right now. It’s a contemporary m/m with magical realism elements, and is set at Hanukkah.

  3. Anna C says:

I loved The Proposal – way better than The Wedding Date IMHO, although I did enjoy that (just couldn’t get over the blatant HIPAA violations).

  4. Annie Kate says:

I spent most of The Wedding Date wishing that Alexa would dump Drew (who I detested with my whole soul) and run off with Carlos (who seemed chill, or at least, Was Not Drew) so I think I’ll give The Proposal a shot. I love the plot concept!

  5. Lisa F says:

Mexican Gothic and The Proposal are both worth every single cent.

  6. Ruth L says:

Count me among the ones who liked The Proposal more than The Wedding Date (which I’ve started several times and never gotten far with). I liked the premise of The Proposal, but didn’t like some aspects of the characterizations.

  7. Emily C says:

Another recommendation for Mexican Gothic, well worth the $4.99 and one of the best books I read this year. It was spooky, sexy and full of Gothic atmosphere but in a time and place I had never read about before.

  8. Kareni says:

I enjoyed Goldilocks by Laura Lam. It held some surprises.

  9. spinster.revival says:

I just saw Queen Move by Kennedy Ryan for $2.99 on Amazon!

(FYI I put all kindle books I want in a wish list and sort every day by price to see drops—it’s the only way I can keep up).

  10. Kris Bock says:

Something about the model on the cover of Mess with Me seemed off, so I studied it intently – you know for science – and finally noticed that his head and neck are lighter than his torso. That’s a pretty unusual tan line, or else he’s been visited by Dr. Photoshop Frankenstein.

  11. Sydneysider says:

Mexican Gothic was GREAT. I just finished reading it this week and couldn’t put it down. I’ve added Untamed Shore to my wishlist because everything I’ve read by Silvia Moreno-Garcia has been fantastic.

I had mixed feelings about The Proposal. Carlos was a much better hero compared to Drew, but I liked Alexa as a heroine more than I liked Nik. It’s still a fun read, and definitely worth it as a KDD purchase.
