  • Someone to Trust

Someone to Trust by Mary Balogh

Someone to Trust by Mary Balogh is $1.99! What perfect timing, as Sarah just interviewed Balogh on the podcast yesterday. This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, which include a lot of romance. I know that for some Balogh is an autobuy author and this one is the fifth book in the Westcott series. Technically this is a holiday romance, if that is or isn’t your thing, but reviews say it isn’t too overtly Christmas-y.

During a rare white Christmas at Brambledean Court, the widow Elizabeth, Lady Overfield, defies convention by falling in love with a younger man in the latest novel in the Westcott series.

After her husband’s passing, Elizabeth Overfield decides that she must enter into another suitable marriage. That, however, is the last thing on her mind when she meets Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, at the Westcott Christmas house party. She simply enjoys his company as they listen to carolers on Christmas Eve, walk home from church together on Christmas morning, and engage in a spirited snowball fight in the afternoon. Both are surprised when their sled topples them into a snowbank and they end up sharing an unexpected kiss. They know there is no question of any relationship between them, for she is nine years older than he.

They return to London the following Season, both committed to finding other, more suitable matches. Still they agree to share one waltz at each ball they attend. This innocuous agreement proves to be one that will topple their worlds, as each dance steadily ensnares them in a romance that forces the two to question what they are willing to sacrifice for love. . . .

  • A Hope Divided

A Hope Divided by Alyssa Cole

RECOMMENDEDA Hope Divided by Alyssa Cole is $2.99 at select vendors! This is book 2 in the Loyal League series.

Redheadedgirl gave it an A grade:

Cole’s books are always timely, and yet timeless. She has a solid grounding of how to use history in her plots, and knows exactly what story she wants to tell. I could not put this down…

The Civil War has turned neighbor against neighbor–but for one scientist spy and her philosopher soldier, war could bind them together . . .

For three years of the War Between the States, Marlie Lynch has helped the cause in peace: with coded letters about anti-Rebel uprisings in her Carolina woods, tisanes and poultices for Union prisoners, and silent aid to fleeing slave and Freeman alike. Her formerly enslaved mother’s traditions and the name of a white father she never knew have protected her–until the vicious Confederate Home Guard claims Marlie’s home for their new base of operations in the guerilla war against Southern resistors of the Rebel cause.

Unbeknowst to those under her roof, escaped prisoner Ewan McCall is sheltering in her laboratory. Seemingly a quiet philosopher, Ewan has his own history with the cruel captain of the Home Guard, and a thoughtful but unbending strength Marlie finds irresistible.

When the revelation of a stunning family secret places Marlie’s freedom on the line, she and Ewan have to run for their lives into the hostile Carolina night. Following the path of the Underground Railroad, they find themselves caught up in a vicious battle that could dash their hopes of love–and freedom–before they ever cross state lines.

  • Into the Drowning Deep

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

RECOMMENDED: Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price-matched. Elyse & I really enjoyed this horror/sci-fi novel. We jointly reviewed the book and ultimately decided on a B. We loved the cast of characters, but found the ending anticlimactic.

New York Times bestselling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.

Seven years ago, the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a “mockumentary” bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.

Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they’re not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life’s work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

  • Starstruck

    Starstruck by L.A. Witt

RECOMMENDEDStarstruck by L.A. Witt is 99c at Amazon! Carrie loved this one and gave it an A-:

Starstruck is a geek-friendly contemporary m/m with characters who feel absolutely authentic. I adored it. It’s sweet, it’s sexy, and it feels very realistic with the exception that both protagonists have way more time on their hands than they would in real life.

Hollywood is full of dirty secrets, but Carter refuses to be Levi’s.

Retired action star Levi Pritchard has made a quiet life for himself in the sleepy logging town of Bluewater Bay, Washington. But then Hollywood comes to film the wildly popular television series Wolf’s Landing, and Bluewater Bay isn’t so sleepy anymore. His retirement doesn’t stick, either, because he’s offered a part on the show—exactly the kind of complex role he’d always wanted, one that would prove him more than a glorified stuntman. The only catch? He has to stay in the closet—no matter how attractive he finds his co-star.

Carter Samuels is the critically-acclaimed male lead on Wolf’s Landing. And now, the man who inspired him to take up acting—and made him realize he’s gay—is joining the cast, and sparks fly between them instantly. But Carter is out and proud and determined to stay true to himself.

Remaining just friends is the only thing to do, as both the studio and Levi’s disapproving, dysfunctional family keep reminding them. Except their friendship deepens by the day, tempting them with what they can’t have but both desperately need.

  1. Laura says:

I know what I’m doing today: listening to the podcast. I love the Westcott series as much as Julie Quinn’s Bridgertons. But Someone To Trust is my favorite romance novel in recent memory. I think It’s because I find it so highly relatable. I’m almost 60 years old and found the love of my life just six years ago when I thought it would never happen; it’s also an incredibly unusual relationship that many of my–now dead and extremely conservative–family members would judge as inappropriate and immoral. This novel is straightforward and tender without being overly sentimental. I can’t wait to listen to the interview. If you’re looking for a series, this is a beautiful grouping of stories describing the rebuilding and reframing of a large family.

  2. Star says:

The whole Loyal League trilogy is excellent, but imho this one has the best romance of the three.

  3. Darlynne says:

@Laura: You go, girl. Wishing you joy and happiness with the love of your life.

  4. Varian says:

Can the Mary Balogh books be read as standalones, or do they need to be read in order?

  5. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Varian: Many of her older books (keep in mind Balogh has been publishing for over 30 years) are stand-alone or can be read as such. Her later books tend to be part of interconnected series (the Huxtables, the Survivors Club, the “Slightly” series) and, even when you can read a book as a stand-alone, its best to read the each series in order because secondary characters are often being setup for their own stories. When I was reading a lot of HR, Balogh was one of my go-to favorites. I don’t read much HR now, but I always have a soft spot in my heart for our Mary.

  6. Stefanie Magura says:

All four books in Vanessa Riley’s Advertisements for Love series are $0.99 right now on Amazon. I’m not sure if this is price matched. I had been looking at these because I wanted more historical romances with people of color.

  7. Kris Bock says:

I read A Hope Divided last week. It’s a hard book to read at times, because of the vivid portrayal of slavery and war, but it’s also a powerful and important book. The description is a bit misleading. There’s not much of her spying, and really not much of them fleeing either. A lot of it takes place in a house in the South, waiting to see just how horrible things are going to get.
