  • The Highwayman

    The Highwayman by Kerrigan Byrne

RECOMMENDEDThe Highwayman by Kerrigan Byrne is 99c! I think this was Byrne’s debut? I could be wrong, but it’s book one in the Victorian Rebels series and it earned an A-. If you love Old Skool vibes, pick this one up.

They’re rebels, scoundrels, and blackguards-dark, dashing men on the wrong side of the law. But for the women who love them, a hint of danger only makes the heart beat faster, in the stunning debut historical romance The Highwayman by Kerrigan Byrne.

    STEALING BEAUTY

Dorian Blackwell, the Blackheart of Ben More, is a ruthless villain. Scarred and hard-hearted, Dorian is one of Victorian London’s wealthiest, most influential men who will stop at nothing to wreak vengeance on those who’ve wronged him…and will fight to the death to seize what he wants. The lovely, still innocent widow Farah Leigh Mackenzie is no exception-and soon Dorian whisks the beautiful lass away to his sanctuary in the wild Highlands…

    COURTING DESIRE

But Farah is no one’s puppet. She possesses a powerful secret-one that threatens her very life. When being held captive by Dorian proves to be the only way to keep Farah safe from those who would see her dead, Dorian makes Farah a scandalous proposition: marry him for protection in exchange for using her secret to help him exact revenge on his enemies. But what the Blackheart of Ben More never could have imagined is that Farah has terms of her own, igniting a tempestuous desire that consumes them both. Could it be that the woman he captured is the only one who can touch the black heart he’d long thought dead?

  • A Kiss at Midnight

A Kiss at Midnight by Eloisa James

A Kiss at Midnight by Eloisa James is $2.99! This is the first book in the Fairy Tale series, and it has a 3.8-star average. I love the dreamy quality of this cover! Readers noted that because of the “fairy tale” elements, don’t expect a ton of historical accuracy in this one. Do you agree?

Miss Kate Daltry doesn’t believe in fairy tales . . . or happily ever after.

Forced by her stepmother to attend a ball, Kate meets a prince . . . and decides he’s anything but charming. A clash of wits and wills ensues, but they both know their irresistible attraction will lead nowhere. For Gabriel is promised to another woman—a princess whose hand in marriage will fulfill his ruthless ambitions.

Gabriel likes his fiancée, which is a welcome turn of events, but he doesn’t love her. Obviously, he should be wooing his bride-to-be, not the witty, impoverished beauty who refuses to fawn over him.

Godmothers and glass slippers notwithstanding, this is one fairy tale in which destiny conspires to destroy any chance that Kate and Gabriel might have a happily ever after.

Unless a prince throws away everything that makes him noble . . .

Unless a dowry of an unruly heart trumps a fortune . . .

Unless one kiss at the stroke of midnight changes everything.

  • One Night with the Laird

One Night with the Laird by Nicola Cornrick

One Night with the Laird by Nicola Cornick is $1.99 at Amazon and Kobo! The hero and heroine have had relations in the past and now the heroine needs the hero’s help, so there’s a second chance element. Readers say the sexytimes have a hint of BDSM to them (restraints), but that the villain was rather obvious.

    A wicked attraction!

Fashionable society widow Lady Mairi MacLeod cannot understand the dark passion that binds her to Jack Rutherford. He is everything she dislikes in a man, rakish, arrogant and charming, and she would prefer to forget the night of wicked passion that she spent in his arms.

But when Mairi is threatened by a blackmailer, Jack is the only man who can protect her. As they work together to uncover where the danger lies, their passion reignites. Little by little, the masks they wear burn away, and their most private secrets come to light…

  • Charlie All Night

Charlie All Night by Jennifer Crusie

RECOMMENDED: Charlie All Night by Jennifer Crusie is $2.99 at select vendors! This was recommended by Candy in a very early version of Lightning Reviews and received an A-:

It features yet another somewhat-sullen-yet-adorable Crusie heroine, and Charlie is another mussed-and-not-traditionally-handsome-but-still-hot hero. I especially enjoyed the details on running a radio show. I have no idea if they’re accurate, but it almost doesn’t matter if they aren’t because Crusie makes it feel real.

Dumped by her boyfriend and demoted from WBBB’s prime-time spot, radio producer Allie McGuffey has nowhere to go but up. She plans to make her comeback by turning temporary DJ Charlie Tenniel into a household name. And if he’s willing to help cure her breakup blues with a rebound fling, that’s an added bonus.

Charlie just wants to kick back, play good tunes and eat Chinese food. He’s not interested in becoming famous. But he isinterested in Allie. And after all, what harm is a little chemistry between friends?

But suddenly their one-night stand has become a four-week addiction. Night after night on the airwaves, his voice seduces her…and all the other women in town. He’s a hit. It looks as if Charlie’s solved all Allie’s problems…except one. What is she going to do when he leaves?

I miss Jennifer Crusie. I know she talked previously about writer’s block and that was so many years ago I guess she never got over it/retired.

  3. N says:

I loved Charlie All Night and already have it, so I went to see if any of Crusie’s other early categories are on sale — and I saw that The Cinderella Deal is currently $11.99?!? For an ebook!?! Of a 225 page category romance!?! What is the publisher (in this case Random House) even thinking, especially with the economy being what it is? Sheesh.

  4. Betsydub says:

I meant to post this hours ago but got sidetracked; so sorry! Today’s NookBook @ BN.com is “Love Lettering” by Kate Clayborn for $2.99. The reviews here at the Bitchery were about 75% “best thing I’ve read in a long time”; the rest, not so much. And the Romance pick of the day is “Ghosted” by Rosie Walsh (2018) also $2.99. I don’t remember if this title was ever reviewed/commented on here, but it sounds intriguing & the reviews are pretty good. Also, it sounds like it might cause fugly sobbing into your pet’s neck fur. The plot has some ghosting (duh…) commonality with Emily Giffin’s book that comes out on Tuesday, “The Lies That Bind”. I’m not sure if right now is the best or the worst time to read either (perfect, once-in-a-lifetime soulmates up & disappear without a trace; Giffin’s is set around 9/11, if you can handle any extra anguish in your current reading), but I’m hoping someone will take the bait, read one or both & then come back with insightful comments or a lengthy review. WARNING – BN.com usually jacks their prices back up right @ midnight, ET. Worth checking, though. So again, I apologize for the lateness of this post; go get’em!!

Oh yeah – and “The Highwayman”? Weird. I read it when it came out, read the followups, still don’t understand what really happened to Dorian (or whatever his name was…). And I never could get past the name “Farah Leigh”. Maybe it was something a Victorian-era girl might be named, but I just kept flashing between the 70’s Angel and this century’s OG Teen-Mom-gone-porn-star (why I can remember that her name is Farah is a mystery, but there you have it).

@Amber: Great news! Jennifer Crusie is in the middle of (re)editing her latest novel, The Devil in Nita Dodd! She’s been working on it for the last couple of years over at her blog, Argh Ink (www.arghink.com). It’s a fun community over there and she’s been very open, and at times collaborative, in her creative process. It has been fun to watch it go through multiple drafts and learn all the very technical ways she goes about balancing plot elements and story/character beats.

  6. chacha1 says:

‘Charlie All Night’ is one of my favorite Crusies. I already own all of them or I would be snatching it up on sale. 🙂

Seconding NomadiCat re: Argh Ink. I am addicted.
