  • The Proposal

    The Proposal by Mary Balogh

The Proposal by Mary Balogh is $2.99! This is the first book in her Survivor’s Club series, which is a favorite amongst the Bitchery. Readers loved the hero, Hugo, but I will admit I’ve never read a Balogh that I wasn’t “meh” about. Balogh fans, what do you love about her books?

In Mary Balogh’s engaging and seductive new novel of drama and romance, a woman comfortable in her solitude allows temptation to free her heart, when a daring war hero shows her how truly extraordinary she is.

    THE PROPOSAL

Gwendoline, Lady Muir, has seen her share of tragedy, especially since a freak accident took her husband much too soon. Content in a quiet life with friends and family, the young widow has no desire to marry again. But when Hugo, Lord Trentham, scoops her up in his arms after a fall, she feels a sensation that both shocks and emboldens her.

Hugo never intends to kiss Lady Muir, and frankly, he judges her to be a spoiled, frivolous–if beautiful–aristocrat. He is a gentleman in name only: a soldier whose bravery earned him a title; a merchant’s son who inherited his wealth. He is happiest when working the land, but duty and title now demand that he finds a wife. He doesn’t wish to court Lady Muir, nor have any role in the society games her kind thrives upon. Yet Hugo has never craved a woman more; Gwen’s guileless manner, infectious laugh, and lovely face have ruined him for any other woman. He wants her, but will she have him?

The hard, dour ex-military officer who so gently carried Gwen to safety is a man who needs a lesson in winning a woman’s heart. Despite her cautious nature, Gwen cannot ignore the attraction. As their two vastly different worlds come together, both will be challenged in unforeseen ways. But through courtship and seduction, Gwen soon finds that with each kiss, and with every caress, she cannot resist Hugo’s devotion, his desire, his love, and the promise of forever.

  • Say You’re Sorry

Say You’re Sorry by Karen Rose

RECOMMENDED: Say You’re Sorry by Karen Rose is $1.99! Carrie, who is not normally a romantic suspense reader, was tempted by the setting of Sacramento. She gave it a B+:

In general I don’t think Romantic Suspense will ever be my favorite genre, but I certainly found this example to be emotional and gripping, and it did a good job of including romance without making me feel that the violence was being used as some sort of adrenaline-providing backdrop.

Introducing the first book in the new pulse-pounding Sacramento series from New York Times bestselling author Karen Rose.

FBI Special Agent Gideon Reynolds did not have a conventional upbringing. Raised in a cult in Northern California, his mother smuggled him out when he was thirteen, and he never saw her again. It is not a bit of history he is keen on sharing, but being guarded has not gotten him any closer to what he really wants: a family.

Daisy Dawson lived a sheltered childhood. Her father, a former military man, believed that the woman he loved and her daughter were being hunted, so he took extreme measures to keep his family safe. But despite his best efforts, Daisy is done being scared. New to Sacramento, she is ready to jump headfirst into life–until she is attacked one night.

Gideon is caught unawares by Daisy, who is unlike any victim he has ever met. But the attacker is far from finished, and tracking him will threaten to pull Gideon back to the world he fought so hard to leave…

  • Highland Conquest

    Highland Conquest by Alyson McLayne

Highland Conquest by Alyson McLayne is $1.99! This is the second book in The Sons of Gregor MacLeod and I read and liked the first book in the series. The first book is also FREE! The second book is on sale as well. Readers like the heroine, who disguises herself as a boy. They also said this book can be read as a standalone. However, some felt part of the book’s conflict was solved rather quickly.

    HE WAS LOOKING FOR VENGEANCE
Laird Lachlan MacKay never planned on leading his clan, but when his older brother was murdered, he was left with no choice. His vow to avenge his brother has led him to the MacPherson clan—and their bewitching healer, Amber.

    INSTEAD HE FOUND HER
Amber MacPherson is desperate. Dressed as a boy to escape her clan’s treacherous leader, she runs right into Lachlan—who orders her detained. At first she causes him nothing but frustration, especially when she blackmails him into helping her clan. But when she’s threatened by the same man who murdered his brother, Lachlan will do whatever it takes to keep her safe—and by his side.

  • The Highland Commander

The Highland Commander by Amy Jarecki

The Highland Commander by Amy Jarecki is $2.99! This is the second book in the Lords of the Highlands historical romance series. The third book is also on sale for the same price. The hero is a virgin (CATNIP!), though several readers though there was too much of a focus on the hero’s virginity.

She cannot resist the man behind the mask…

As the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish earl, Lady Magdalen Keith is not one to partake in lavish balls or other frivolities. Yet at her father’s urging, she agrees to dance with the battle-weary officers at this year’s holiday masquerade. It’s practically her civic duty! But when one such officer—whose dashing good looks cannot be disguised by a mere mask—sweeps her off her feet and into his arms, the innocent lass can’t help herself. Her lips are his for the taking.

But will he betray his country for a kiss?

Navy lieutenant Aiden Murray has spent too many months at sea to be immune to the charms of this lovely beauty. Even after he returns to his ship, she lives in his dreams. But when he discovers Maddie’s true identity—and learns that her father is accused of treason—will the brawny Scot risk his life to follow his heart?

  1. Laurel says:

The Survivor’s Club series was my first exposure to Mary Balogh, and I loved it. I have gone back and read some of her older work, and I do not find them as compelling as this series and her Westcott series, so if you have only read her older works you might find the newer ones more compelling. What I love about her work is that I know I am in the hands of a master – the story will be well told, the characters will be interesting, and the ending will be satisfying. I highly recommend The Proposal.

  2. Mandy Aguilar says:

One thing I really love about Mary Balogh’s books, particularly the Survivor’s Club series and much of her later work, is that they are stories about couples healing together. Her books are usually quieter, with characters who are working through trauma of some sort. I find them extremely comforting.

  3. Karen D says:

Thanks for the reminder that I never finished the Survivor’s Club series. I did not like book 3 at all and put them on the back burner. I’m going to try to jump back in with book 4.

  4. Deborah says:

THE WINDFLOWER by Laura London is $3.99 at Amazon (down from $7.99).

  5. Dottiebears says:

Can I nominate Highland Conquest for cover snark? The longer I look at it the ickier it gets.

  6. Betsydub says:

Heads up! Ta-Nehisi Coates’ “The Water Dancer” is $4.99 @ bn.com. Also, “Crazy Rich Asians” is $3.99. The sample of “The Water Dancer” that I’ve read is very dense; not an “easy” (or even “medium”) read. I definitely won’t be able to leave the tv or radio on in the background. But, hey – like it or not (NOT!), I’ve got the time now to read it.

  7. Sydneysider says:

@Betsydub, “The Water Dancer” is great and I highly recommend it. It did take me some time to get into, but once the story gets moving I couldn’t put it down.

“Crazy Rich Asians” is also a good read. The second book (“China Rich Girlfriend”) in the series is OK – not terrible, but I found it to be a step down from the first in terms of quality. The third (“Rich People Problems”) is back up to the standard set in “Crazy Rich Asians.”

  8. Betsydub says:

Thank you, @Sydneysider! I hope you too have something compelling lined up to read next.

  9. chacha1 says:

LOL at the sword symbolism on those Highland books.

  10. Nebilon says:

@mandy Aguilar I am with you on finding them comforting. There is something about the characters that seems to make them more realistic than for other authors, although the situations they are in are often completely nuts.
Also she gets the tone of the regency period well
