  • The Blacksmith Queen

The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken

RECOMMENDED: The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken is $2.99! What a coincidence, as this was my one pick for hilarious reading in our latest Ready Set Go. I also gave this an A-. Seriously, it’s so much fun:

The Blacksmith Queen is a bloody, feminist romp that exudes girl power in all forms, and I’m envious of its fantasy girl squad.

When a prophesy brings war to the Land of the Black Hills, Keeley Smythe must join forces with a clan of mountain warriors who are really centaurs in a thrilling new fantasy romance series from New York Times bestselling author G.A. Aiken.

    The Old King Is Dead

With the demise of the Old King, there’s a prophesy that a queen will ascend to the throne of the Black Hills. Bad news for the king’s sons, who are prepared to defend their birthright against all comers. But for blacksmith Keeley Smythe, war is great for business. Until it looks like the chosen queen will be Beatrix, her younger sister. Now it’s all Keeley can do to protect her family from the enraged royals.

Luckily, Keeley doesn’t have to fight alone. Because thundering to her aid comes a clan of kilt-wearing mountain warriors called the Amichai. Not the most socially adept group, but soldiers have never bothered Keeley, and rough, gruff Caid, actually seems to respect her. A good thing because the fierce warrior will be by her side for a much longer ride than any prophesy ever envisioned…

  • The Immortals

The Immortals by Jordanna Max Brodsky

The Immortals by Jordanna Max Brodsky is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. It’s the first book in the Olympus Unbound. Sarah gave the first book a B grade. I highly recommend reading Sarah’s review to get a full sense of whether this book may be for you.

When I started reading it, I had a really difficult time putting it down. The world building made for addictive reading, even when I was reading things I usually don’t read.

    MANHATTAN HAS MANY SECRETS.
SOME ARE OLDER THAN THE CITY ITSELF.

    Manhattan.
The city sleeps. Selene DiSilva walks her dog along the banks of the Hudson. She is alone-just the way she likes it. She doesn’t believe in friends, and she doesn’t speak to her family. Most of them are simply too dangerous.

    Murders.
In the predawn calm, Selene finds the body of a young woman washed ashore, gruesomely mutilated and wreathed in laurel. Her ancient rage returns. And so does the memory of a promise she made long ago. To protect the innocent-and to punish those who stands in her way.

    Gods.
With the NYPD out of its depth, Selene vows to hunt the killer on her own. But when classics professor Theo Schultz decodes the ancient myth behind the crime, the solitary Huntress finds herself working with a man who’s her opposite in every way. Together, they face a long-forgotten cult that lies behind a string of murders, and they’ll need help from the one source Selene distrusts most of all: the city’s other Immortals.

  • For My Lady’s Heart

For My Lady’s Heart by Laura Kinsale

For My Lady’s Heart by Laura Kinsale is $1.99! The book is available at other retailers, but the sale price hasn’t been matched it. Several of the book descriptions I saw mention that the ebook has two versions of the book. According to a comment last time this was on sale, both versions are included.

In medieval Europe, vows and laws are as inflexible and confining as a suit of armor. For Ruck, a noble and honest knight, those rules provide an unwavering path. Even as his wife leaves him for the Church, taking his money and his steed, Ruck’s life is one of devotion and mission.

For the beautiful widow, Princess Melanthe, those same laws and traditions conspire to consume her land and her independence. Her husband’s death has left her kingdom an inviting target for neighboring territories. Where Ruck sees a clear path, Melanthe must navigate through twisting alleyways, using shrewd deceit and devious strategy.

Can these two help each other overcome the powers conspiring against them? Will the passion in their hearts escape the constraints of their station? Is devotion enough?

With her classic romance FOR MY LADY’S HEART, author Laura Kinsale has crafted a rich, sensual portrait of life during the Middle Ages. And, now for the first time, readers can choose between two versions of the story. Both are included in this same ebook.

The first is the original published novel filled with authentic Middle English dialogue and deep period detail. The second (included only here in the ebook version) had been painstakingly reworked by the author to include a tighter read and more modern words for dialogue. Whichever you decide to read, you’ll be richly rewarded with a story of love and honor for the ages.

  • Fluffy

    Fluffy by Julia Kent

Fluffy by Julia Kent is $2.99 at Amazon! It’s available elsewhere, but not on sale. I’m on the fence about trying this one because it sounds hilarious with the “fluffer” misunderstanding, but humor is so subjective and I’ve been burned by romantic comedies before.

An all-new STANDALONE from New York Times bestselling author Julia Kent

It all started with the wrong Help Wanted ad. Of course it did.

I’m a professional fluffer. It’s NOT what you think. I stage homes for a living. Real estate agents love me, and my work stands on its own merits.

Sigh. Get your mind out of the gutter. Go ahead. Laugh. I’ll wait.

See? That’s the problem. My career has used the term “fluffer” for decades. I didn’t even know there was a more… lascivious definition of the term.

    Until it was too late.

The ad for a “professional fluffer” on Craigslist seemed like divine intervention. My last unemployment check was in the bank. I was desperate. Rent was due. The ad said cash paid at the end of the day. The perfect job!

Staging homes means showing your best angle. The same principle applies in making a certain kind of movie. Turns out a “fluffer” doesn’t arrange decorative pillows on a couch.

They arrange other soft, round-ish objects.

The job isn’t hard. Er, I mean, it is — it’s about being hard. Or, well… helping other people to be hard.

    Oh, man…

And that’s the other problem. A man. No, not one of the stars on the movie set. Will Lotham – my high school crush. The owner of the house where we’re filming. Illegally. In a vacation rental.

By the time the cops show up, what I thought was just a great house staging gig turned into a nightmare involving pictures of me with an undressed star, Will rescuing me from an arrest, and a humiliating lesson in my own naivete.

My job turned out to be so much harder than I expected. But you know what’s easier than I ever imagined?

Having all my dreams come true.

Speaking of the Blacksmith Queen (which was, indeed, awesome), the sequel is announced for November!

  2. Msb says:

I’d take the Blacksmith Queen so much more seriously if the author/blurber could tell the difference between a prophecy (noun) and to prophesy (verb). Pedant out ….

  3. Gloriamarie Amalfitano says:

I LOVED the Immortals and I really wish vol 2 were a LOT cheaper.

  4. hng23 says:

@Msb: practiCe / practiSe, the bane of my existence.

  5. DonnaMarie says:

You should absolutely treat yourself to The Immortals, expecially if you spent you preadolescence as a mythology geek. Ahem. Selene’s sidekick/possible love interest is a Classical Studies professor. Seriously.

  6. Pat says:

@hng23: American English only uses praCtice as noun and verb. British English has the distinction between the two.

  7. Pat says:

    @hng23: Sorry – practiCe!

  8. Maite says:

Thank you! I’ve been aching to try The Blacksmith Queen, but pre-ordering Honey Badgers #3 had hit the book budget hard.

  9. hng23 says:

@Pat: I’m Canadian & we use British spelling. I know there are other spelling differences but I didn’t know this is one of them. Thanks for the tip!

  10. seantheaussie says:

Currently 74% in to The Blacksmith Queen. Some bloody funny moments, but much less in the second half so far. Not a romance book. It may eventually qualify as a fantasy book with romance, but so far it isn’t even that. OTT so requires considerable ability to suspend disbelief.

  11. HeatherS says:

“Ayesha At Last” is $2.99 right now.

  12. Lizzy says:

I couldn’t get more than a couple chapters into Fluffy. It’s not very funny at all.

  13. Antipodean Shenanigans says:

Amy Andrews‘ Sydney Smoke rugby novellas are all $0.99 on Amazon. If you like sports romance, these are for you.
Since the footy has been indefinitely postponed, Aussies will have to get creative to tide us over.

  14. Kelly says:

The Blacksmith Queen lost major points from me every time a woman was called a “mad cow” (at least 5 times), like the author didn’t know that prion disease is a thing. It definitely did not live up to the hype.
