You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!
This HaBO is from Elle, who wants to find this historical romance:
I’ve been doing a bunch of searching on both SBTB, GoodReads, and Google, and am not finding a specific novel I remember loving from my formative early romance reading days.
Key plot points:
It was historical set in the US with a train journey cross-country.
I think the heroine was a writer? Maybe a journalist. And she maybe wore spectacles.
The hero might have been a train robber – I’m really not sure on that, but I vaguely remember that he wasn’t the best dude at first.
They were forced to stay in the same hotel room (of course), and he protected her.
This would have been published before 1995, I think, before I went to college.
Thanks for any help you can provide!
Very interested if the hero is a train robber!

This sounds like Only My Love by Jo Goodman. The heroine is a reporter, and the hero is an undercover marshal embedded in an outlaw gang, and he kidnaps the heroine during a train robbery. It’s definitely one of Goodman’s older works.
Ditto to Only My Love.
I agree with Only My Love (aka Wild Sweet Ecstasy).
This is great – thank you so much!! I would NEVER have found it otherwise. I’ll give it a re-read and see if it holds up to my very impressionable 14 year old regard.
I’m too late but am also hopping on the … ha ha … Jo Goodman train.
Ahem, I have re-read this book! While there are some eye-roll inducing miscommunications, I thoroughly enjoyed it. And plan to re-read the others in this series!
