  • Song of Blood & Stone

Song of Blood & Stone by L. Penelope

RECOMMENDED: Song of Blood & Stone by L. Penelope is $1.99! This is the first book in the Earthsinger Chronicles and is an amazing fantasy romance. Penelope’s writing is so underrated, in my opinion. I also recommend her podcast episode with Sarah; Penelope has her own podcast as well: My Imaginary Friends.

Between love and duty lies destiny

Orphaned and alone, Jasminda is an outcast in her homeland of Elsira, where she is feared for both the shade of her skin and her magical abilities. When ruthless soldiers seek refuge in her isolated cabin, they bring with them a captive – an injured spy who steals her heart.

Jack’s mission behind enemy lines nearly cost him his life but he is saved by the healing power of a mysterious young woman. Together they embark on a perilous journey straight into the heart of a centuries-old conflict.

Thrust into a hostile society, Jasminda and Jack must rely on one another even as secrets jeopardize their bond. As an ancient evil gains power, Jasminda races to unlock a mystery that promises salvation.

The fates of two nations hang in the balance as Jasminda and Jack must choose between love and duty to fulfill their destinies and end the war.

  • Someone to Trust

Someone to Trust by Mary Balogh

Someone to Trust by Mary Balogh is $1.99! I know that for some Balogh is an autobuy author and this one is the fifth book in the Westcott series. Technically this is a holiday romance, if that is or isn’t your thing, but reviews say it isn’t too overtly Christmas-y.

During a rare white Christmas at Brambledean Court, the widow Elizabeth, Lady Overfield, defies convention by falling in love with a younger man in the latest novel in the Westcott series.

After her husband’s passing, Elizabeth Overfield decides that she must enter into another suitable marriage. That, however, is the last thing on her mind when she meets Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, at the Westcott Christmas house party. She simply enjoys his company as they listen to carolers on Christmas Eve, walk home from church together on Christmas morning, and engage in a spirited snowball fight in the afternoon. Both are surprised when their sled topples them into a snowbank and they end up sharing an unexpected kiss. They know there is no question of any relationship between them, for she is nine years older than he.

They return to London the following Season, both committed to finding other, more suitable matches. Still they agree to share one waltz at each ball they attend. This innocuous agreement proves to be one that will topple their worlds, as each dance steadily ensnares them in a romance that forces the two to question what they are willing to sacrifice for love. . . .

  • Changeling

    Changeling by Molly Harper

Changeling by Molly Harper is 99c at Amazon! This is a Kindle Daily Deal, though isn’t being price-matched just yet. This is giving me Gail Carriger/Custard Protocol vibes, if you happened to enjoy that series.

If 14-year-old Cassandra Reed makes it through her first day at Miss Castwell’s Institute for the Magical Instruction of Young Ladies without anyone discovering her secret, maybe, just maybe, she’ll let herself believe that she really does belong at Miss Castwell’s.

Except Cassandra Reed’s real name is Sarah Smith and up until now, she lived her whole life in the Warren, serving a magical family, the Winters, as all non-magical “Snipes” are bound by magical Guardian law to do. That is, until one day, Sarah accidentally levitates Mrs. Winter’s favorite vase in the parlor…

But Snipes aren’t supposed to have magical powers…and the existence of a magical Snipe threatens the world order dictated during the Guardians’ Restoration years ago. If she wants to keep her family safe and protect her own skin, Sarah must figure out how to fit into posh Guardian society, master her newfound magical powers and discover the truth about how an ordinary girl can become magical.

“Molly Harper’s Changeling is masterful fantasy—a spunky Cinderella story with a heroine who’s equal parts compassion, determination, and pure magical delight.” —Rachel Vincent, author of the Soul Screamers series and The Stars Never Rise

  • Rough Love

    Rough Love by Lauren Landish

Rough Love by Lauren Landish is 99c at Amazon! This came out in December and is the first book in the Tannen Boys series. There seems to be some catnip here with a second chance romance and single parent heroine. However, it seems like the heroine is dealing with some trauma. Feel free to poke around Goodreads reviews to protect yourself.

    Second chances aren’t always easy.
Sometimes, it takes some Rough Love.

Bruce Tannen is better known by his nickname, Brutal, because once upon a time, he was a monster on the football field.
Now, he’s a farmhand on what used to be his family’s land, and change is all around him.

A new family, new expectations, and even new friends. It’s all just fine by him until he runs into the one woman to ever hold his heart. The past comes back with a wallop of a tackle that even he can’t take.

Allyson left him a lifetime ago, but she’s the only thing that’s ever felt right… in his arms, in his heart, in his life.

Something’s different, though. She’s a shadow of her former self, and he wonders what could’ve dulled her shine.

He can help fight her demons to bring back that sunny smile he used to bask in, but should he?

Allyson Meyers knew who she was and where she was going, but a wrong turn years ago took her on a journey she never imagined. Not even in her worst nightmares.

It was ugly, but she’s stronger now for the one person who matters… her son, Cooper.

Being a single mother is a burden she’s grateful to bear alone until she sees a pair of all-too-familiar broad shoulders and dark, knowing eyes that remind her of who she once was.

Bruce was the one she’d left behind, the path she should’ve taken. It’s too bad you can’t rewrite history. But if she’s brave enough, maybe they could create a new future?

Can Bruce open his heart to the one who shattered it?

And can Allyson blend who she is now with who she used to be and live the happily ever after she should’ve had?

Rough Love is a full-length Romance with an HEA, no cheating, and no cliffhanger. It can be read as a standalone.

  1. Nerdalisque says:

The Mary Balogh book is delightful! I was concerned about the Christmas aspect because I’m a bit of a Scrooge, but it set up the romance and didn’t carry through the book.

  2. Nerdalisque says:

@Amanda, I think Pudding Protocol is brilliant, but the Gail Carriger series is the Custard Protocol. 😉

  3. Amanda says:

@Nerdalisque: Whoops, haha! I think my brain combined “Prudence” and “Custard” and came up with “Pudding.”

  4. PamG says:

While Harper’s Changeling is a decent YA magical boarding school fantasy, it lacks the edginess of Carriger’s books and the humor of either Carriger’s or Molly Harper’s earlier series. I liked it; didn’t love it.

  5. Tam says:

I’m reading Molly O’Keefe’s ‘Wedding at Riverview Inn’ after grabbing it from a a sale on here, and I need to know: does the jackass hero ever stop expecting the heroine to ‘get over’ her history of miscarriage, including the devastating loss of a twenty-week pregnancy? Because I’m 40% of the way through, and right now, I just want to smack him repeatedly. (Also, this book should carry a giant trigger warning for pregnancy loss. Gah.)

  6. San says:

I really enjoyed Song of Blood and Stone – I picked it up at the library because i loved the cover, and wasn’t disappointed. So yay for for sale, it’ll be good to own it now!

  7. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Tam: I just finished the three-book RIVERVIEW INN series and loved them—but when I write about the first one in WAYR, I did put a cw/tw for miscarriage. The hero does redeem himself, but the grovel is not overwhelming. The hero has some issues throughout all three books—mostly due to the sudden reappearance of his mother after a 30-year absence. One thing I like about O’Keefe is that she’s not afraid to have characters make mistakes (sometimes repeatedly) and get into messy situations before they achieve their HEA.

If you are into SFF, that author list will have you drooling. I’m off to read my copy!

  9. Leigh Kramer says:

I loved Song of Blood & Stone! This reminds me I still need to read the second book in the series.

  10. Song of Blood & Stone is one of my favorite book thanks for your review.

  11. Deborah says:

Mary Balogh’s books are too melancholy for me. I’ve tried and tried (yes, even Slightly Dangerous) but her books leave me sadder than I am happy at the end. I’m sure there’s a perfectly good word for the exact flavor of sadness I’m experiencing, but all I know is it’s not where I want to be at the end of romance novel.

  12. cleo says:

Plus I have three stories in these anthologies that you can’t read anywhere else! One in Rogue Desire, one in Rogue Affair, and one in Rogue Hearts.

  13. Lepiota says:

I love Changeling. It’s telling a more serious story, and it’s not a comedy, and that’s important to know going in. (Not to say there’s not humor…)
