  • Women Rowing North

Women Rowing North by Mary Pipher

Women Rowing North by Mary Pipher is $1.99 at Amazon! This is a bestselling nonfiction about the difficulties women face as they age. It’s a bestseller and has been rather popular at the bookstore where I work part-time. However, reviews say it’s obviously written from a place of privilege.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Reviving Ophelia, a guide to wisdom, authenticity, and bliss for women as they age.

Women growing older contend with ageism, misogyny, and loss. Yet as Mary Pipher shows, most older women are deeply happy and filled with gratitude for the gifts of life. Their struggles help them grow into the authentic, empathetic, and wise people they have always wanted to be.

In Women Rowing North, Pipher offers a timely examination of the cultural and developmental issues women face as they age. Drawing on her own experience as daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, caregiver, clinical psychologist, and cultural anthropologist, she explores ways women can cultivate resilient responses to the challenges they face. “If we can keep our wits about us, think clearly, and manage our emotions skillfully,” Pipher writes, “we will experience a joyous time of our lives. If we have planned carefully and packed properly, if we have good maps and guides, the journey can be transcendent.”

  • The Price of Grace

The Price of Grace by Diana Munoz Stewart

The Price of Grace by Diana Munoz Stewart is $2.99! This is the second book in the Black Ops Confidential romantic suspense series, which follows a group of vigilante sisters. Readers say it’s pretty high in action and suspense, but wish the romance were more developed.

    Who can you trust
When family, truth, and love are all on the line?

Gracie Parish knows the true cost of trust. Rescued as a child by the infamous Parish family, she became a member of their covert sisterhood of vigilantes. Gracie saw her most precious relationships destroyed by secrecy. She learned long ago to protect her heart as well as her family’s secrets.

Special Agent Leif “Dusty” McAllister will do anything to uncover the truth about the Parish family’s covert operations. Dusty knows Gracie is his ticket in. He’ll use everything he’s got—fair, unfair, and just plain wrong—to break through her defenses. But the more he gets to know Gracie and her family’s mission, the harder he starts to fall. Neither one is sure they’ll get out of this with their lives—or their hearts—intact.

  • The Billionaire Game

The Billionaire Game by Lila Monroe

The Billionaire Game by Lila Monroe is 99c! This contemporary romance seems really cute and fun, but I’m also tapped out on billionaires right now. This romance was originally released in three parts, but they’re all compiled into one full-length romance in this edition.

All’s fair in love, war, and lingerie… Discover the steamy romantic comedy boxset from USA Today bestselling author Lila Monroe! Perfect for fans of Sophie Kinsella and Christina Lauren.

Sexy playboy billionaire Asher Young goes through girlfriends like he goes through bottles of MoĂ«t. I would know — he brings them all to get fitted for my luxury lingerie designs. I guess that’s one way to avoid awkward conversations when they find another girl’s panties in his Maserati.

Now he has a proposition for me: he’ll invest in my design business, and I’ll finally open the boutique of my dreams. There’s just one problem: I can’t stop kissing him. And he looks REALLY good naked.

    Make that two problems….

  • Fierce & Fabulous

Fierce & Fabulous by Elizabeth Varlet

Fierce & Fabulous by Elizabeth Varlet is 99c! This is the first book in a M/M erotic contemporary series. I’m not 100% on if it’s an erotic romance or not, but a lot of reviews mention the high amount of sex and sexual content. Readers also note this is a “gay for you” romance, if that is or isn’t you thing.

The first in a scorching new male/male series by Elizabeth Varlet. Behind the Sassy Boyz’s seductive smiles and sinful dance moves are desires that will leave readers breathless.

Fitch Donovan never thought a lap dance could change his life, but from the moment the gorgeous dancer’s lips touch his, his world comes screeching to a halt. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t shake the desire that rocks him to his core. He’s longed for this passion all his life—he just never dreamed he’d find it with another man.

Sharing a soul-shaking kiss with a straight boy is the kind of drama Ansel Becke just doesn’t need. Spotlights aren’t made for two and Ansel prefers to keep things on a one-night-only basis. So when Fitch shows up asking for an encore, Ansel knows he should send his gorgeous ass packing.

Though Ansel tries to pretend that what’s between him and Fitch is far from fabulous, there’s something about the big, burly contractor that makes Ansel’s world sparkle in a way no amount of glitter ever could. And Fitch will do whatever it takes to convince Ansel that when the thing you need most in the world falls right into your lap, you’d be a fool to let it go.

  1. Darlynne says:

I’m sorry, the cover of FIERCE & FABULOUS reminds of that squirrel gif, where the squirrel’s front paws are raised dramatically as if dancing or orating. I wish I could find it, makes me laugh every time.

  2. Vicki says:

So, as a woman whose late husband spent all her retirement and savings, will Women Rowing North piss me off or will I find it encouraging? Because “if we have planned carefully and packed properly” makes me think pissed.

  3. Kate says:

Wow Vicki, I can only imagine the storm of emotions. Plus all the external…crap. Use any support systems you have for all they are worth. Best wishes.

  4. Joy says:

That advice to “keep our wits about us” and “manage our emotions well” sounds like very old advice.
Watch your money and your significant other or wind up like Vicki above. Do background checks on anyone you date. Never loan a lover any money. Etc. All advice that older women with any money has heard many times with lots of examples of rogues and con men/women. Sigh. Its sad that the assumption is that relationships in older people are full of danger and that love can’t happen with an older woman. So sad.

  5. RebeccaA says:

Vicki, best wishes. So sorry for your double loss.

Joy, I hope you aren’t blaming Vicki when you say “Watch your money and your significant other or wind up like Vicki above.” We should be able to trust people like our spouses, and if they abuse that trust they are to blame – not us.

  6. Joy says:

RebeccaA, too true. I don’t believe that we should “watch our money and our significant other”. That’s my point. So often we hear this advice or warnings as seems to be implied in “Women Rowing North” with “keeping our wits about us”. I don’t blame Vicki. We SHOULD trust our spouses/suitors. Yet women, especially older women are portrayed in fiction and real lifes as victims or prey.

  7. Vicki says:

I have several successful women doctor colleagues/friends and some other professional women that this has happened to. We seem to be attracted to these charming rogues, possibly because we work so hard and don’t know how to play. So, I don’t feel it is wrong for people to comment that we should be more careful/cautious. If anyone can learn from this, please do. Meet your partner’s family and friends, verify their background, before you get serious. Be financially aware and check your accounts yourself on some sort of basis (financial advisers can make mistakes, too). And be aware that people change. My spouse spent years working in war zones with refugees and injured children. He spent years more working with abused children. Then he got cancer (thanks, Agent Orange) and decided “you only live once and you die alone.” And forgot to mention that to me.

OTOH, I am meeting some nice men now, having coffee (for the umpteeth time) with one from OKCupid this Sunday. He is a sweetie and a gentleman and does not wish to merge life or savings with me. Total HFN! Romance rules.

  8. kt says:

Vicki, thanks for mentioning your story. I’m not yet 40 — getting close — and have recently decided to change my attitude toward money, in part because of hearing stories like yours. (I had a friend/mentor in her 60s who is facing the rest of her life without monetary safety and still hustling for jobs. She had it all with her husband, too, until it all unraveled into alcoholism and divorce, and she is not the one who ended up with the boat and the house.) And then there’s the friend in her 50s who is still hustling for jobs and taking care of her disabled ex-husband and her autistic adult child on her single income… I know how much she makes and retirement won’t be possible for a long time. Thank you again for sharing your stories: I’m listening! I’m trying to plan ahead to make sure I and my child are taken care of even if something happens to my husband!

  9. RebeccaA says:

Vicki and Joy. Thanks to both of you for clarifying. I am glad to have misunderstood. 🙂
