  • Hollow Kingdom

Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton

RECOMMENDEDHollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton is $3.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. Carrie gave this one an A-, but warns it’s definitely not a romance:

This book broke my heart but it also made me so happy.

One pet crow fights to save humanity from an apocalypse in this uniquely hilarious debut from a genre-bending literary author.

S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle’s wild crows (those idiots), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos ®.

Then Big Jim’s eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to feel like something isn’t quite right. His most tried-and-true remedies–from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim’s loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis–fail to cure Big Jim’s debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he discovers that the neighbors are devouring each other and the local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of dangerous new predators roaming Seattle. Humanity’s extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a foul-mouthed crow whose knowledge of the world around him comes from his TV-watching education.

Hollow Kingdom is a humorous, big-hearted, and boundlessly beautiful romp through the apocalypse and the world that comes after, where even a cowardly crow can become a hero.

  • A Bollywood Affair

A Bollywood Affair by Sonali Dev

A Bollywood Affair by Sonali Dev is $2.99 at Amazon! Dev is an auto-buy author for me. It was also a Book Club pick, a RITA® nominee, and the manuscript was a Golden Heart nominee, too. Dev’s books are like reading a soap opera, so expect some really angsty, emotional moments. Do you have a favorite Dev romance?

Mili Rathod hasn’t seen her husband in twenty years—not since she was promised to him at the age of four. Yet marriage has allowed Mili a freedom rarely given to girls in her village. Her grandmother has even allowed her to leave India and study in America for eight months, all to make her the perfect modern wife. Which is exactly what Mili longs to be—if her husband would just come and claim her.

Bollywood’s favorite director, Samir Rathod, has come to Michigan to secure a divorce for his older brother. Persuading a naïve village girl to sign the papers should be easy for someone with Samir’s tabloid-famous charm. But Mili is neither a fool nor a gold-digger. Open-hearted yet complex, she’s trying to reconcile her independence with cherished traditions. And before he can stop himself, Samir is immersed in Mili’s life—cooking her dal and rotis, escorting her to her roommate’s elaborate Indian wedding, and wondering where his loyalties and happiness lie.

  • The Harlot Countess

The Harlot Countess by Joanna Shupe

The Harlot Countess by Joanna Shupe is $1.99 at select vendors! If you can’t already glean from the description, there is definitely going to be some slut-shaming here. Though I’m a Shupe fan, I haven’t read this one yet, but I am very interested in the heroine’s work as a political cartoonist.

Maggie, Lady Hawkins, had a debut she’d rather forget—along with her first marriage. Today, the political cartoonist is a new woman. A thoroughly modern woman. So much so that her clamoring public believes she’s a man…

FACT: Drawing under a male pseudonym, Maggie is known as Lemarc. Her (his!) favorite object of ridicule: Simon Barrett, Earl of Winchester. He’s a rising star in Parliament—and a former confidant and love interest of Maggie’s who believed a rumor that vexes her to this day.

FICTION: Maggie is the Half-Irish Harlot who seduced her best friend’s husband on the eve of their wedding. She is to be feared and loathed, as she will lift her skirts for anything in breeches.

Still crushed by Simon’s betrayal, Maggie has no intention of letting the ton crush her as well. In fact, Lemarc’s cartoons have made Simon a laughingstock…but now it appears that Maggie may have been wrong about what happened years ago, and that Simon has been secretly yearning for her since…forever. Could it be that the heart is mightier than the pen and the sword after all?

  • What a Widow Wants

What a Widow Wants by Jenna Jaxon

What a Widow Wants by Jenna Jaxon is 99c at select vendors! This historical romance was a previous Hide Your Wallet pick and features a masquerade ball. However, some readers felt they never were truly invested in the main couple. This is part of The Widows’ Club series.

Widowed by the Battle of Waterloo, the ladies of Lyttlefield Park are returning to London society—with their futures in their own hands…

Fanny, the widowed Lady Tarkington, has finished mourning her cad of a husband and is ready to enjoy her freedom. The kind of freedom neither a gently bred miss nor a close-watched wife is permitted: dressing up as Aphrodite for a masquerade, drawing gentlemen away from the party, and hinting at late-night assignations with her dance partners. All is going pleasurably according to plan—until the Roman warrior Fanny kisses during a masque turns out to be Matthew, Lord Lathbury, whose proposal she refused years ago.

Lathbury is charming, passionate, inventive, everything Fanny wants in a lover—but unfortunately, he’s on the hunt for a wife. He’s more than willing to use all his wicked skills to persuade her back to the altar, but he can’t wait forever. And now Fanny’s position is more precarious than she once thought. If the tongues of the ton set to wagging, it’s possible no offer in the world will save her from ruin. But does she want to be saved?

  1. Lisa F says:

The Shupe and the Dev are damn good if I remember right, but Jaxson has never grabbed me. She has interesting, unique plots that get drowned to death in cliche writing choices.

  2. Susan says:

I’ve had Hollow Kingdom on my wish list since reading Carrie’s review, and am excited to pick it up on sale. (But I’ll have to gear myself up for some heartache.)

  3. Leigh Kramer says:

A Bollywood Affair is wonderful! Probably my favorite of her work.

  4. Lynn S says:

If you’re a Joanna Shupe fan, another one of her books is on sale. From the Knickerbockers Club series: Baron. is $1.99. Although it’s also a KU book. I haven’t read it yet, but I read Tycoon and Magnate, and really liked them. They take place during the Gilded Age, which may be similar to the time we are living in now. For whatever reason I found it comforting that these kinds of eras have occurred before.

  5. Star says:

Iirc the slut-shaming in the Shupe is less intense than in the other books in that trilogy, but still left a sour taste in my mouth, although I did finish it, because I liked the voice. Shupe and I have a sort of tormented relationship though, so if your relationship with her is less fraught, you might like it better than I did.
