Links: Doggust, Lizzo, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Hey there! Welcome to Wednesday Links! It’s pretty self-explanatory: we link some things and it’s Wednesday. Sometimes the things are informative. Sometimes they’re silly. Or maybe even just plain weird.

I think it’s a reminder to take some time for yourself this afternoon. If you’re like me, there are times when you need a little nudge to take a break.

A Circe adaptation may be coming to HBO! It looks like the series will be on HBO Max, which I have no idea what that is. Please don’t tell me it’s yet another streaming package.

Olivia Waite, writing for The Seattle Review of Books, knocks it out of the park with the geographic gatekeeping of publishing. She also recommends romances with a geographic theme. If you aren’t following her column, you’re missing out!

Love dogs and art? Welcome to the Doggust hashtag! Each day of the month, artists are encouraged to draw a specific breed of dog.

A friend of mine I’ve known since elementary school has become fascinated with Chuck Tingle and the world of bizarre erotica. Is it my fault? Undoubtedly. Well he couldn’t remember his Amazon password and to recover it, he had to tell customer service three books that he recently purchased for his Kindle. The transcript for this somewhat awkward scenario is on Reddit and yes, I have his permission to post!

Lizzo’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert is the best one every performed in the history of Tiny Desk Concerts. Her energy is so wonderful and she knows how to charm a crowd.

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Not gonna lie, I sang my ass off with Lizzo during ”Juice” ❤️. She is Ah-MAZING! And I loved all the bad a$$ ladies singing with her in the audience .

I’m listening to the ‘my dad wrote a porno’ podcast (if you don’t know it, look it up, it’s hilarious!!) and I totally read the reddit convo like it happened on the podcast with Alice going: was it a Sasquatch?! And James be like: ‘good enough for me!’

“Please don’t tell me it’s yet another streaming package.”

It’s another streaming package. And not, from what I hear, a super inexpensive one.

  4. LauraL says:

The Amazon password recovery transcript is hilarious! I’d be saying, “I bought three Duke books….”

This link was shared by a local group that works to preserve rural culture and history. (They run a kick-butt local producers co-op, too!) Food for thought if you are looking to be part of grassroots change. I love seeing the community/urban gardens springing up in my region.

Just remember, gardening is gangsta ….

@JJB: Ugh, I’m hitting streaming overload. I know monopolies are never a good idea business-wise and some feel that streaming services are a cheaper and more personalized alternative to cable, but with SO MANY now it’s 1) hard to keep track of which things are going to be on which platforms and 2) not very cost effective.

  6. Ren Benton says:

@Amanda: At our house, we run out of things we want to watch on any individual streaming service after (at most) three months. Rather than subscribe to all of them simultaneously, we get one, cancel when we’ve seen everything of interest, and switch to another that has the most content we want at that point in time. Not ideal for those who have a burning desire to WATCH!!! EVERYTHING!!! NOW!!!, but it’s way cheaper than stacking services on top of each other and/or premium cable.

  7. Marissa says:

    @ Ren,
That is exactly what I do with KU, scribd, audible escape, etc.

  8. Escapeologist says:

Doggust has made my day. So many doggos, art styles and lovely people!

Just to fill you in, AT&T (which acquired Warner Bros fairly recently) is unveiling a streaming service in 2020 called HBO Max. It will be HBO plus a ton of Warner Bros. content. Reading the trades, the rumor is it will only cost a dollar or two more than HBO Now. So maybe like $16 or so? I already subscribe to HBO, so I have zero qualms shelling out a buck more to get all the other stuff. It gets more complicated if you subscribe to HBO via cable. No idea how that will work. And obviously if you don’t subscribe to HBO then that is pretty expensive (although Netflix is no longer that cheap either).

@ Ren Benton — I think you have the right idea. I walked away from cable 5 years ago, and don’t think I will ever return. Even with prices rising and services multiplying, it’s still easier to jump on and off these streaming services. Except maybe Amazon Prime. So to me, it’s the better deal because there’s a choice, while with cable it’s very difficult (and costly) to sign up and cancel.

  10. MsCellanie says:

It’s proving all of the people wrong who thought that just paying for the shows/channels you want would be cheaper.
I have really wide tastes, so the list of shows I’d like to see are everywhere. The old cable model (yes, I’m paying for the golf channel, but who knows? Maybe they could come up with a limited series based on “Pat & Mike” someday) worked really well for me.
This new world where I have to pay for every show makes it too expensive to subscribe across the board. It sucks.

  11. denise says:

I spit out my tea on that transcript.

  12. giddypony says:

See get into Asian romance shows (Thailand and Taiwan forever!) and y ou can watch them for free or on youtube. Plus pick up useful words, like “useless rich guy” and “the second son” and “kiss”.

  13. ak says:

I went down a rabbit hole of googling chick tingle, who seems like the most interesting and nicest person ever. Thank you for that in addition to the laughs!

  14. ak says:

Ugh, Chuck not chick. Btw, the fire tablet has THE worst autocorrect

  15. Glauke says:

He was a guest on the podcast once, and he was a delight!
