Contemporary Romances, a Labyrinth, & More

  • For the Duke’s Eyes Only

For the Duke’s Eyes Only by Lenora Bell

For the Duke’s Eyes Only by Lenora Bell is $1.99! This historical romance has an archaeologist heroine and a childhood friends to enemies to lovers romance. Carrie read this one and ultimately wanted more nerdery. Have you read this one?

If adventure has a name…it must be Lady India Rochester. The intrepid archaeologist possesses a sharp blade and an even sharper knack for uncovering history’s forgotten women. Unfortunately, she has one annoying weakness: the dangerously handsome Duke of Ravenwood. Former best friend. Current enemy. And the man who dared to break her heart.

Daniel Bonds, the Duke of Ravenwood, is a thrill-seeking antiquities hunter who only plays by one rule: Never fall in love. He’s in it for the fortune and glory. At least that’s what he wants the world to think. He’s sworn to hide his tangled web of secrets, especially from the one woman he cares about and will protect at any cost.

But when a priceless relic is stolen from the British Museum, the rivals must align forces. Racing to recover the stolen antiquity and avert an international disaster? All in a day’s work. Avoiding their buried feelings? More and more impossible. For love is about to become the greatest treasure of all.

    The grand adventure begins…now!

  • Sure Thing

    Sure Thing by Jana Aston

Sure Thing by Jana Aston is 99c! First person descriptions bug me a little because it’s hard to know what a book is actually about. From what I gathered from reviews, the heroine is a girl gone bad who starts a no strings attached relationship with a sexy Brit. As one does. It does sound like a really fun read though.

Have you ever set out to have a one night stand with a sexy stranger?
    No? I’m the only one?
    Just kidding, I would never.
    Ever.
    Not usually.

But then I figured, why not? My entire life I’ve been good and it’s gotten me nowhere.
    No job.
    No apartment.
    No boyfriend.

    I’m owed a little fun, aren’t I? A reward for being good.
Sure, a new pair of shoes would be more appropriate, but Mr. Sexy Stranger is more appealing. And when he speaks—in that British accent—it’s a done deal. Every American woman has a hot British guy fantasy. Well, most do. I haven’t taken a poll or anything, but I’m pretty sure it’s a fact.

    Except…
You know that saying about best-laid plans?
Good, because I don’t either, but I assume they go awry.
    Like my one night stand…

  • Where There’s a Will

Where There’s a Will by Beth Corby

Where There’s a Will by Beth Corby is 99c! This is a contemporary romance and it’s giving me some rom com vibes. Readers say this one is a rather charming read, while others expressed difficulty getting into the story at first. It has a 4.2+ avg on GR.

Would you take the chance that could change everything?

After leaving university at the age of twenty-five with no idea what to do with her life, Hannah is stunned when she is left a mystery bequest by her rich, estranged great-uncle Donald.

But there’s a catch: before she can find out what she’s inherited, she must undertake a series of unknown tasks alongside Alec, Donald’s reluctant (but rather gorgeous) PA.

As the tasks progress and she and Alec grow closer, Hannah begins to think that Donald’s real gift might have more to do with love than money . . .

  • To Best the Boys

To Best the Boys by Mary Weber

To Best the Boys by Mary Weber is $1.99! I mentioned this one in March’s Hide Your Wallet. I haven’t read this one yet, but there’s one Goodreads review of this book that I love, simply for this line:

This is basically a maze competition where the winner gets a scholarship and PTSD.

The task is simple: Don a disguise. Survive the Labyrinth. Best the boys.

In a thrilling new fantasy from the bestselling author of the Storm Siren Trilogy, one girl makes a stand against society and enters a world made exclusively for boys.

Every year for the past fifty-four years, the residents of Pinsbury Port receive a mysterious letter inviting all eligible-aged boys to compete for an esteemed scholarship to the all-male Stemwick University. The poorer residents look to see that their names are on the list. The wealthier look to see how likely their sons are to survive. And Rhen Tellur opens it to see if she can derive which substances the ink and parchment are created from, using her father’s microscope.

In the province of Caldon, where women train in wifely duties and men pursue collegiate education, sixteen-year-old Rhen Tellur wants nothing more than to become a scientist. As the poor of her seaside town fall prey to a deadly disease, she and her father work desperately to find a cure. But when her mum succumbs to it as well? Rhen decides to take the future into her own hands—through the annual all-male scholarship competition.

With her cousin, Seleni, by her side, the girls don disguises and enter Mr. Holm’s labyrinth, to best the boys and claim the scholarship prize. Except not everyone’s ready for a girl who doesn’t know her place. And not everyone survives the deadly maze.
