  • The Library at Mount Char

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins is $2.99! I’ve heard such good things about this fantasy/horror novel, and it’s been recommended in one of my book groups. However, some felt this one was a bit too strange for them. Have you read this one?

    A missing God.
A library with the secrets to the universe.
A woman too busy to notice her heart slipping away.

Carolyn’s not so different from the other people around her. She likes guacamole and cigarettes and steak. She knows how to use a phone. Clothes are a bit tricky, but everyone says nice things about her outfit with the Christmas sweater over the gold bicycle shorts.

After all, she was a normal American herself once.

That was a long time ago, of course. Before her parents died. Before she and the others were taken in by the man they called Father.

In the years since then, Carolyn hasn’t had a chance to get out much. Instead, she and her adopted siblings have been raised according to Father’s ancient customs. They’ve studied the books in his Library and learned some of the secrets of his power. And sometimes, they’ve wondered if their cruel tutor might secretly be God.

Now, Father is missing—perhaps even dead—and the Library that holds his secrets stands unguarded. And with it, control over all of creation.

As Carolyn gathers the tools she needs for the battle to come, fierce competitors for this prize align against her, all of them with powers that far exceed her own.

But Carolyn has accounted for this.

    And Carolyn has a plan.

The only trouble is that in the war to make a new God, she’s forgotten to protect the things that make her human.

Populated by an unforgettable cast of characters and propelled by a plot that will shock you again and again, The Library at Mount Char is at once horrifying and hilarious, mind-blowingly alien and heartbreakingly human, sweepingly visionary and nail-bitingly thrilling—and signals the arrival of a major new voice in fantasy.

  • The Lady Meets Her Match

The Lady Meets Her Match by Gina Conkle

The Lady Meets Her Match by Gina Conkle is $1.99! This historical romance is the second book in the Midnight Meetings series, though it can function as a standalone. The first book is free, though! If you’re into fairy tale elements, this one has a heavy Cinderella vibe. However, others wished there were more of a plot involved.

LOCATING HER IS ONLY HALF THE BATTLE

Cyrus Ryland didn’t become England’s wealthiest bachelor by being a pushover, but the mysterious beauty he discovers sneaking around at his grand ball enflames his curiosity. When the clock chimes midnight and she’s nowhere to be found, Cyrus vows to scour all of London to uncover who she is. Little does he know that not only does Claire Mayhew not want to be found, but she wants nothing to do with him at all…

  • Kissed by a Dark Prince

Kissed by a Dark Prince by Felicity Heaton

Kissed by a Dark Prince by Felicity Heaton is 99c! This is book one in the Eternal Mates series and obviously features the fated mates trope. Readers seemed divided on the world building. Some thought the premise delivered, while others were rather bored. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

Olivia thinks it’s her lucky night when a dangerously handsome unconscious fae ends up on her inspection table. He’s her chance to redeem herself with her employer, the demon-hunting organisation, Archangel. But when the tall, dark and deadly immortal warrior awakes, she gets much more than she bargained for…

Attacked by his enemy in the elf kingdom, the last thing Prince Loren expects when he comes around is a beautiful angel watching over him and medical technology of the mortal realm. Hazy from his injuries, all he can focus on is the pulse ticking in her throat and the sweet allure of her blood.

One single bite reveals she is his eternal mate, triggering a bond between them that will leave him weakened until it is complete… or broken, and pulling Olivia into the crossfire of his ancient feud.

To protect his people and his mate from the machinations of a madman, Loren must risk everything by working with Olivia at Archangel to find a way to break the bond blossoming between them.

But will Loren be strong enough to place duty before desire and give up the one thing he has waited millennia for and craves above all others—his eternal mate? And will Olivia be able to resist the incredible heat that burns between them and the temptation of her dark prince’s kiss?

  • Positively Pippa

    Positively Pippa by Sarah Hegger

Positively Pippa by Sarah Hegger is 99c! This is the first book in the Ghost Falls small town romance series. Some reviews on Goodreads mentioned that both characters are in their 30s, which can be hard to come by in romance. However, others thought the plot was a bit scattered.

From author Sarah Hegger comes an exciting new series set in small-town Utah, where secrets don’t keep for long—and love turns up in the most unexpected places.

For Pippa Turner there’s only one place to go when her life self-destructs on national TV—home to Ghost Falls, and her heavily perfumed, overly dramatic, but supremely loving grandmother, Philomene. If anyone will understand how Pippa’s hit makeover show was sabotaged by her vengeful ex, it’s Phi. But she’s not the only one who’s happy to see her—and Pippa can’t help but wonder if Matt Evans, her gorgeous high-school crush turned Phi’s contractor, is game for a steamy close-up…

Matt owes his whole career to Phi and her constant demands to embellish the gothically ridiculous house he built for her. Getting to see red-headed, red-hot Pippa is a bonus, especially now that she’s no longer the troublesome teenager he remembers. He’s willing to stay behind the scenes while she gives her own life a much-needed makeover, but not forever. As far as he’s concerned, their connection is too electric to ignore. And the chance to build something lasting between them—before she can high-tail it back to Hollywood—is going to the top of his to-do list…

The Library at Mount Char is a great dark fantasy read. I don’t recommend it as a romance but Caroline is the kind of protagonist who will sneak into your brain and have you rooting for her 100%. The concept behind the plot is one of those mind-benders that will make you stop and think about it for days afterwards. I read it for a second time this year and still love it. If a reader likes GOT, Resurrection Blues, American Gods… this is right in that genre.

TW for violence though… like GOT at its worst-level violence.

On the other side of the coin, for me The Library at Mt Char was a WTF DNF. I even tried the audio book. Big nope.

  3. I’m with KB on The Library at Mount Char. It was far darker than I was maybe prepared for, but I thought it was wonderful. The character journey in it was rich and rewarding. It definitely had some horror/violence elements that disturbed me (legit content warning there—it gets gross and cruel), but when I had finished the book I recognized those components as essential. I loved the book, and definitely recommend…but 100% not a romance.

  4. Tracey says:

This book made me go back ad read it again almost immediately. I can’t call it romance but it kept me reading.
I agree with commentor KB above. violent. And twisted.
    I’ll read it again.

The Flashpoint Series Collection by Rachel Grant is on sale on Amazon.
    The collection includes:
    TINDERBOX (Flashpoint #1)
    CATALYST (Flashpoint #2)
    FIRESTORM (Flashpoint #3)
INFERNO (A never-before-published Flashpoint Series Novella)

The first two books have been featured previously in Books on Sale posts.

  8. Jess says:

I feel like there should be a content warning on The Library At Mount Char – there is a lot of violence and a fair bit of sexual violence involved.

(I really disliked it, and not just for those reasons).

  9. Tilly says:

I also loved the library at Mt Char SO MUCH, but it definitely needs a CW, I did not expect from the back blurb as much violence as there was. I didn’t feel like it was manipulative to the reader but it was being used by characters to manipulate other characters in ways I can’t even explain but I still loved it.

R.J. Blain’s The Magical Romantic Comedy (with a body count) Starter Pack containing 4 novels and 3 novellas/short stories is on sale for $.99!
I paid full price for these earlier this year, thanks to a SBTB recommendation and enjoyed them. They are non-related stories set in the same world with occasional secondary character overlap. Some are a bit nuttier than others, but what would you expect from a novel entitled, “Serial Killer Princess. Enjoy!
