Links: Spotify, Shipping, & Netflix Adaptations

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Happy first Wednesday of February! After a pretty cold spell in New England, it’s unseasonably warm. I hope all of your reading is going well. So far, I’ve read some great books this year, but I’m worried about how much that is going to crash and burn. The streak has to end sometime.

Blush Magazine has launched! It’s a digital magazine for romance lovers and I’m interviewed in the first issue. I get to talk about some of my favorite things: shipping and fanfiction. There are also interviews with authors Beverly Jenkins and Kylie Scott. Go show Blush some love!

If you’re in the D.C. area and are a romance reader, don’t miss out on this romance book group! They meet the second Sunday of each month at 6pm. Book selections for February – April are already announced.

You may have seen The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo featured on the site and in Books on Sale. Well, Netflix has announced that they’re producing an adaptation that will consist of six episodes. Who else is excited?!

For those who prefer to listen to their podcasts on Spotify, Smart Podcast Trashy Books is officially on the streaming platform! You can find us here (note: clicking the link will most likely launch Spotfiy).

Love science and animals? If you missed it, be sure to check out the #UnscienceAnAnimal hashtag on Twitter. Here’s one of my favorites:

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

I am in the middle of The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo and it is beautifully written and so compelling and cinematic. Ghost Bride is at the top my tbr pile now, and if it’s anything like The Night Tiger then I am very excited for the Netflix series!

  2. Susan says:

The Washington Post had an article about the controversy surrounding the author of The Woman in the Window, but the link to The New Yorker article by Ian Parker is what’s absolutely riveting. Seriously, it’s mind-boggling stuff, far more gripping than the book.

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed it, but it wasn’t a “knock your socks off” kind of read for me. You don’t need to have read the book to enjoy (if that’s the right word) the articles, but there are some spoilers in the Parker piece.

Do you like Pre-Raphaelite art? Do you like wombats? Have you ever considered those two things in the same sentence? Well, here we are:

@DiscoDollyDeb You’ve just made my day!
Let me return the favour: if you enjoy Aiden Turner & the PRBs, you might want to watch Desperate Romantics, in which Mr Turner plays Dante Rossetti.
6 episodes on YouTube, links begin here: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=desperate+romantics+episode+1

@hng23: Thank you! Let me return the favor—here is a link to “Dante’s Inferno,” directed for BBC TV in 1967 by Ken Russell, starring Oliver Reed as Dante Rossetti. Unfortunately, the only full-length version I could find has Russian voice-overs, but the visuals are stunning:

I read “The Ghost Bride” back when it came out and loved it. Can’t wait to check out this adaptation!

  7. Another Anne says:

Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom, a sociologist and former guest on the SBTB podcast is a guest on Chris Hayes’ podcast, Why Is This Happening. She talks about her new book of essays, entitled Thick and her previous book entitled Lower Ed. I enjoyed her interview with Sarah, but this podcast was really interesting and now I want to buy both her books.

Also, I second @Susan’s recommendation regarding the New Yorker article about Dan Mallory. I have not read his book, but I was fascinated by the article.

  8. Kristen says:

I just discovered the ‘Hidden Women of History’ series on The Conversation via this article, Miss Fury might be the most famous superhero you’ve never heard of: https://theconversation.com/hidden-women-of-history-tarpe-mills-1940s-comic-writer-and-her-feisty-superhero-miss-fury-110179

  9. CK says:

What! Oh my goodness I am super excited about an adaptation for The Ghost Bride!

  10. Shem says:

The Mallory article linked by Susan was bonkers and I couldn’t stop laughing that apparently one of Sophie Hannah’s books in new hercule poirot series working title was “I bet you think this Poirot is about you” (it’s thought she got some of the ideas for it from Mallory,s behaviour. I read that book and thought the bits that now I realise were drawn from life – if the article is accurate unbiased representative etc – were a bit outlandish and unrealistic so that’s me told then. )

  11. hng23 says:

@DiscoDollyDeb: I saw Dante’s Inferno sometime in the 70s; it’s still amazing. I found a link for it on youtube. In 2 parts, in English, with subtitles (in English). That opening scene is like something out of a Hammer horror film!
    Here you go:

I also highly recommend the book Pre-Raphaelites in Love by Gay Daly. So much drama!
