    Homeward Bound by Emily Matchar

Homeward Bound by Emily Matchar is 99c! This is a nonfiction book that has some great discussions on feminism and domesticity. I also remember it making a big splash when it came out. Some readers didn’t find the book very enlightening, while others felt the book highlighted a lot of things about themselves they never realized.

Amid today’s rising anxieties—the economy, the scary state of the environment, the growing sense that the American Dream hasn’t turned out to be so dreamy after all—a groundswell of women (and more than a few men) are choosing to embrace an unusual rebellion: domesticity. A generation of smart, highly educated young people are spending their time knitting, canning jam, baking cupcakes, gardening, and more (and blogging about it, of course), embracing the labor-intensive domestic tasks their mothers and grandmothers eagerly shrugged off. Some are even turning away from traditional careers and corporate culture for slower, more home-centric lifestyles that involve “urban homesteading,” homeschooling their kids, or starting Etsy businesses. They’re questioning whether regular jobs are truly fulfilling and whether it’s okay to turn away from the ambitions of their parents’ generation.

How did this happen? And what does it all mean? What happens to American culture as a whole when our best and brightest put home and hearth above other concerns? Does this sudden fascination with traditional homemaking bode ill for gender equality? What role have the media and blog culture played in making domesticity look so darn appealing?

In Homeward Bound, acclaimed journalist Emily Matchar takes a long, hard look at both the inspiring appeal and the potential dangers of this trend she calls the New Domesticity, exploring how it could be reshaping the role of women in society and what the consequences may be for all of us. In riveting interviews with all kinds of people from coast to coast, Matchar examines the motivations of those who have embraced this movement, from Southern food bloggers to chicken-keeping “radical homemakers” on the East Coast to Etsy entrepreneurs in Provo, Utah, to attachment parenting devotees in Chicago, and many more. This groundbreaking reporting on the New Domesticity is guaranteed to transform our notions of women in today’s society and add a new layer to the ongoing discussion of whether women can—or should—have it all.

  • Fair Game

    Fair Game by Amy Andrews

Fair Game by Amy Andrews is 99c! This is the third book in the Women of W.A.R. series. It’s a standalone and the one I’m most excited to read out of the three books. If you missed it, Sarah did a great podcast with the authors on this series and on Aussie Rules football. Lots of catnip in this one!

How to mend a broken heart…

Darcy Clarke would do anything to play for the new Women’s Aussie Rules league, even put up with her ex, Tony, who just happens to be the coach of the Brisbane Banshees. Tony stomped out of their apartment – and all over heart – two years ago, but she’s moved on, and she deserves her jersey.

As his best friend’s girl, Darcy has always been out of Levi’s reach, even after Tony dropped her and moved out of the apartment they all shared. Now, two years on and still sharing the same apartment, she should be fair game. But Levi is no closer to getting Darcy to think of him as anything but a roommate and a friend.

But when Darcy injures herself in play, Levi’s qualifications as a sports massage therapist are put to good use. Suddenly, their relationship becomes very hands on, and Darcy sees a whole new side of her old friend. A pity he seems immune to her charms. When Tony makes it clear he wants back into her life, she has a decision to make: between the man she once loved and the man who never left her side.

  • Drakon’s Past

    Drakon’s Past by N.J. Walters

Drakon’s Past by N.J. Walters is 99c! This is the fourth book in the Blood of the Drakon series. There is a fated mates trope if that isn’t your thing. Readers really liked the heroine and her abilities and cool job. However, some recommend reading the previous books for a more fulfilling read. It has a 4-star average on Goodreads.

Constance Owens has a gift for finding unique items in the most unlikely places, which comes in handy since she buys and sells artifacts and antiques for a living. When she purchases a set of four dragon statues, she has no idea just how unique they are, or that finding them will thrust her into a world of secret societies, men who think nothing of kidnapping and murder to get what they want, and dragon shifters.

Nic hasn’t survived for four thousand years by letting his guard down, and he doesn’t trust anyone except his drakon brothers. The loneliness haunting him has been getting worse since all his brothers have found their mates. And when he finds the woman his drakon recognizes instantly as his fated mate, he doubts he’ll ever have what his brothers have, because it seems she’s involved with the secret society of hunters who have been hunting and capturing his kind for hundreds of years.

  1. Katie Lynn says:

Purchasing Fair Game because I’ve enjoyed the other books written by her (Sydney Smoke). The other two books in the W A R series appear to be on sale for $0.99 as well

  2. Katie Lynn says:

Looking a bit closer, the other two books in the WAR series are written by different authors, neither of whom

  3. Katie Lynn says:

I’ve read. (Yeesh. I somehow deleted that as the comment was going through)

  4. Maureen says:

I bought the W.A.R. series, it sounds awesome! I missed that podcast with the three authors and just did a quick read the transcript. I am a big fan of the Sydney smoke series by Amy Andrews, and for kicks I bought A Heart Stuck on Hope by Nicola Marsh (new to me author), and I’m loving it so far. I really enjoy books set in Australia, especially in the bush.

So, it sounds like the ball they use in the Australian women’s football is a lot like a rugby ball, am I wrong on that? I guess I should hit google to find out!

  5. Jen says:

The other books in the Blood of the Drakon series were fun diversions, but the fourth book was very meh. I definitely would NOT start there.
