Urban Fantasy & Paranormal Romances

  • Shadow Blade

    Shadow Blade by Seressia Glass

Shadow Blade by Seressia Glass is 99c! This is the first book in the Shadowchasers urban fantasy series. There’s a lot of Egyptian mythology, which readers felt was a breath of fresh air in the UF genre. However, some felt the world building was more interesting than the characters. Have you read this one?

For Kira Solomon, normal was never an option.

Kira’s day job as an antiquities expert, but her true calling is as a Shadowchaser. Trained from youth to be one of the most lethal Chasers in existence, Kira serves the Gilead Commission dispatching the Fallen who sow discord and chaos. Of course, sometimes Gilead bureaucracy is as much a thorn in her side as anything the Fallen can muster against her. Right now, though, she’s got a bigger problem. Someone is turning the city of Atlanta upside-down in search of a four-millennia-old Egyptian dagger that just happens to have fallen into Kira’s hands.

Then there’s Khefar, the dagger’s true owner-a near-immortal 4000-year-old Nubian warrior who, Kira has to admit, looks pretty fine for his age. Joining forces is the only way to keep the weapon safe from the sinister Shadow force, but now Kira is in deep with someone who holds more secrets than she does, the one person who knows just how treacherous this fight is. Because every step closer to destroying the enemy is a step closer to losing herself to Shadow forever. . . .

  • First to Burn

First to Burn by Anna Richland

First to Burn by Anna Richland is 99c! This is the first book in her Immortal Vikings series and readers had mixed feelings about the hero. Many found him unique and loyal, but others remarked that he had a lot going on with his immortality and PTSD. This book has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

    A soldier with secrets

Immortal Viking Wulf Wardsen once battled alongside Beowulf, and now serves in Afghanistan. He’s trusted the mortal men on his elite special operations team to protect his secret, until an explosion lands Wulf in a place more dangerous to him than a battlefield: a medevac helicopter.

    A doctor with questions

Army captain Theresa Chiesa follows the rules and expects the same from others, even special forces hotshots like Sergeant Wardsen. She’s determined to discover the secret behind his supernaturally fast healing, and she won’t allow his sexy smile to distract her.

An enemy with nothing to lose

Even as Theresa’s investigation threatens to expose him, Wulf is stirred by her passion. Dreaming of love and a normal life, he wants nothing more than to build a future with her. But the lost Viking relic needed to reverse his immortality is being hunted by another—an ancient enemy who won’t hesitate to hurt Theresa to strike back at Wulf.

  • Mob Rules

    Mob Rules by Cameron Haley

Mob Rules by Cameron Haley is 99c! This is the first book in The Underworld Cycle urban fantasy series. I believe the next two books are also on sale, but Amazon is being weird with trying to search for things. Like the previous UF in the sale post, the world building was great, but it suffered from being too slow.

As LA plunges into an occult gang war, mob sorceress Domino Riley must unravel a conspiracy that reaches beyond the magic-soaked mean streets into a world of myth and legend.

Domino investigates the ritual execution of a mob associate, a graffiti magician named Jamal. The kid isn’t just dead, he’s been squeezed — the killer stole his magical power or “juice.” Domino summons Jamal’s shade, and the ghost points to Adan Rashan as his killer. This is tricky, because Adan is the favored son of Domino’s boss, Shanar Rashan, a six-thousand-year-old Sumerian wizard. It’s even trickier because only a mobbed-up sorcerer could have squeezed Jamal and Adan isn’t a sorcerer.

As the corpses pile up, Domino must confront the killer and unmask an otherworldly kingpin with designs on her gang’s magic-rich turf.

MOB RULES is an urban fantasy novel of murder and magic, betrayal and redemption set in the supernatural underworld of Los Angeles.

  • American Vampire

    American Vampire by Jennifer Armintrout

American Vampire by Jennifer Armintrout is $1.99! Judging by reviews, this seems like more of an urban fantasy with romantic elements, rather than just a straightforward paranormal romance. Readers enjoyed the hero a lot, but do be warned that some reviews mention infidelity if that’s something you avoid in books.

HE’S THE GOOD KIND OF VAMPIRE. SORT OF.

Buried in the Heartland is a town that no one enters or leaves. Graf McDonald somehow becomes its first visitor in more than five years and he was only looking for a good party. Unfortunately, Penance, Ohio, is not that place. And after having been isolated for so long, they do not like strangers at all.

Jessa’s the only one to even remotely trust him, and she’s desperate for the kind of protection that only a vampire like Graf can provide. Supplies are low, the locals are ornery for a sacrifice and there’s a monster more powerful than Graf lurking in the woods. New men are hard to come by in this lonesome town, and this handsome stranger might be Jessa’s only hope for salvation.

Even if she has to die first.

  1. Thank you for telling me that my book First to Burn is on sale! (I’ll go do some promotion now, LOL, but we’re getting a chicken coop today so maybe not so much promotion will get done).

And I one-clicked on the Seressia Glass — the immortals in First To Burn are only 1500 years old, and I felt for their struggle to adapt. Have to see how a 4000 year old handles modernity.

  2. Amanda says:

@Anna: Good luck on the chicken coop! My brother and I were frequently on “coop duty” as teens. The chickens were lovely, but the turkeys…DO NOT RECOMMEND.

  3. Elizabeth Spurlock says:

I have read Shadow Blade and I can assure you it’s really good, and gives a really excellent and accurate portrait of some real places in Atlanta as well (I have eaten at the Vortex and yes, it’s that good.) I found the hero more interesting than the heroine but then he’s got a lot going on! A great urban fantasy featuring POC kicking butt. Wouldn’t mind seeing a movie of this starring Tessa Thompson and Donald Glover…

  4. @Amanda – I live in the city, and turkeys are not allowed. But up to 6 chickens are. I have told the daughter (who even made a powerpoint to convince us of the need to get chickens) that we are limited to 3. But unfortunately everyone else we know with chickens has started with 3 and gone on to 6 or ordinance-violating size flocks. I will be firm at 3 and only 3. She wants the varieties with the froufy feather puffs and I’m all “Orpingtons, just plain old chickens, no feathers on the legs because … poop!” But it’s almost noon and the chicken coop gentleman is not here yet.

Are there any romances with city chickens, I wonder?

  5. Joy says:

Anna–get one of the varieties that lay colored eggs which are really fun! Three chickens should produce about two eggs each day so more chickens mean more eggs (when they are laying). Folks start out with 3 and find themselves buying tasteless supermarket eggs to supplement and so they add more chickens… with cute coloration or elegant feathers etc. and so a flock grows.

Unfortunately my town won’t allow “farm animals” so no chickens allowed but about 1/2 mile away the city of Chicago allows chickens, goats, pigs, whatever as long as you don’t slaughter them at home and they are quiet. Evidently Mrs. O’Leary’s cow might still be allowed! I’ve never seen a romance with city chickens or goats but maybe someone will be inspired to write one?

  6. KateB says:

Amazon is offering nine translated ebooks for free in honor of World Book Day!

  7. Avice says:

I enjoyed the can’t-leave-town-ever setup and the endearingly shady asshole hero of “American Vampire,” but the urban fantasy elements had better focus than the romance, and it made the book lopsided. The hero and heroine are suddenly making out and having OMG 4 EVA ~feeeeelings~, and the shady asshole hero has suddenly developed a conscience like boyfriend material, less because the plot earned it than because it’s the second half of a paranormal romance novel and we need a happily ever after to wrap this up.

I did enjoy the characters, so I would’ve been happy to read a maybe-ever-after flirtation ending for American Vampire and then a Book 2 of heroine and endearing slightly-less-shady asshole hero getting to know each other before they finally hook up.

  8. Amanda says:

@Anna: We had some Barred Rock chickens and they’re very speckled and pretty!

  9. The chicken coop guy did not come today. But the daughter’s team won their softball game 19 -3 so she got over the disappointment of not having a still-empty coop. Tomorrow!

And my book (because of course there are many chicken books) tells me I should put my spouse’s golf balls in the nest box to teach them where to lay their eggs. I am looking forward to doing that.

  10. Rebecca says:

To note, Jennifer Armintrout is not to be confused with Jennifer L Armentrout, completely different authors.

  11. jayelblock says:

Anna-I kept four silkie hens in my suburban backyard and they were charming, and not particularly messy even with the feathered legs. They were docile and quiet, and produced very small, but tasty, eggs which the dogs and I greatly enjoyed. I used to give them the occasional bath in the kitchen sink, and while they didn’t care for the water, they loved the blow dryer and would spread their wings and doze while I was drying their feathers.
