A Night to Surrender
A Night to Surrender by Tessa Dare is $2.99! This is the first book in the much loved Spindle Cove series. Sarah has really enjoyed this series (though she says this one was her least favorite of the books). She also says the setting is wonderful and the characters, especially the women, are fantastic. What’s your favorite book in the series?
Spindle Cove is the destination of choice for certain types of well-bred young ladies: the painfully shy, young wives disenchanted with matrimony, and young girls too enchanted with the wrong men; it is a haven for those who live there.
Victor Bramwell, the new Earl of Rycliff, knows he doesn’t belong here. So far as he can tell, there’s nothing in this place but spinsters . . .and sheep. But he has no choice, he has orders to gather a militia. It’s a simple mission, made complicated by the spirited, exquisite Susanna Finch–a woman who is determined to save her personal utopia from the invasion of Bram’s makeshift army.
Susanna has no use for aggravating men; Bram has sworn off interfering women. The scene is set for an epic battle; but who can be named the winner when both have so much to lose?

An Earl Like No Other
An Earl Like No Other by Wilma Counts is 99c! This historical romance is a standalone and features two single parent characters. Readers wanted more in terms of the romance, but others found the hero and heroine’s worry over their children to be really touching. Also, I may hate strapless dresses, but I’m loving what the heroine is wearing on the cover.
WHEN ALL SEEMED LOST…
Katherine Gardiner, a young English widow, has only one dream: to protect her son—a future duke—from her merciless father-in-law. Determined and desperate, she has no option but to take the guise of a housekeeper and escape to Yorkshire where the only hope is the enigmatic Earl of Kenrick…
…LOVE SAVED THE DAY
In all his years spent roaming the world, Jeremy Chilton never braced himself for the burden of a much-damaged inheritance. Now, the new Earl of Kenrick must save his family legacy and raise his motherless young daughter as a proper English lady. His only salvation is his beautiful housekeeper, Kate. But as her secrets unravel, much that is puzzling about her falls into place. No wonder the Earl has caught himself imagining her more wife than employee. Clearly she belongs at Kenrick—safe in his arms. Now, if only he can convince her to agree…

Ascension
Ascension by A.S. Fenichel is 99c! This is a historical romance with paranormal elements and the first book in the Demon Hunters series. Readers definitely say the heroine has a Buffy vibe, but others wanted more in terms of the world building. If the series interests you, all three books can be purchased for less than $3 total!
When demons threaten London, Lady Belinda answers the call.
Lord Gabriel Thurston returns home from war to find his fiancée is not the sweet young girl he left behind. She’s grown into a mysterious woman who guards her dark secrets well. When he sees her sneaking away from a ball, he’s convinced it’s for a lover’s rendezvous. Following her to London’s slums, Gabriel watches in horror as his fiancée ruthlessly slay a man.
Lady Belinda Carlisle’s only concern was her dress for the next ball—until demons nearly killed her and changed everything. A lady by day, and a demon hunter by night, she knows where her duty lies. Ending her betrothal is the best way to protect Gabriel from death by a demon’s hand.
Gabriel soon realizes, like him, Belinda has been fighting for her country. He joins in the fight, determined to show her that their love can endure, stronger than ever.

A Dream of Redemption
A Dream of Redemption by Bronwen Evans is $1.99! This is a historical romance with a bookish heroine and class differences. Readers enjoyed the writing and the mystery element with the romance, but others though it was just all right, without anything too memorable. It has an impressive 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.
A forbidden love and a chilling mystery tease the senses in this sensuous historical romance from the USA Today bestselling author of A Kiss of Lies and A Love to Remember.
Bookish and independent Lady Helen Hawkestone is expected to marry well. But, having grown up with warring parents, the institution holds little appeal. The trick, she realizes, is to marry for love—a task that’s easier said than done. Only while Helen is raising funds for her do-gooder sister’s orphanage does she meet a man who arouses her curiosity. Lowborn and yet so dignified that Helen can’t help but try to elicit a response, Clary Homeward is an enigma—a heart-stopping, body-stirring, forget-her-social-upbringing enigma.
A single offense against a noblewoman such as Lady Helen would ruin a man like Clary. Her sister, Marisa, rescued him from hellish poverty and employs him with her charity work. Try as he might to push her away, Helen tempts him to want things he could never have. But when girls from the orphanage start disappearing, destined for a grim fate Clary knows all too well, Helen insists on helping. And soon Clary wonders whether something more were not just possible but inevitable—even right.

(Double post—here and in Rec League comments)
Freebie alert: Carolyn Crane’s AGAINST THE DARK and Annika Martin’s THE HOSTAGE BARGAIN, both recommended in today’s Rec League request for heist books, are both free in the kindle store right now. (Also, iirc, Crane and Martin are the same person.)
Clary Homeward? It took me like three reads of the book description to realize that was the character’s name. What an odd name. I’d really like to know how the author chose that name for here character.
Also currently free:
Spring in Sweetwater County by Ciara Knight (description: “Forty years after the death of her true love, Judy Gaylord discovers he’s alive. With the guilt of her falling into the arms of his cousin to console her grief, she now must face the man she betrayed.”)
DEVIN: A Hitman Romance by Heather West (a woman kills her abusive husband minutes before a hitman arrives to do the same)
Beg, Borrow, or Steal by Susie Tate (a single mother in medical school falls asleep in class one day, which catches the instructor’s attention)
Also currently free: The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen. (Highly recommend!)
I also really loved and highly recommend A Night to Surrender.
That COVER! (Ascension) I bought it for that alone. Yes please more grimly determined women with swords and great dresses.
Time out. The man SHE betrayed? He’s been playing opossum for the last FORTY YEARS and she’s feeling guilty? Hard pass.
ICYMI: Sarina Bowen is serializing her story “Studly Period” featuring Josie & Pepe, whom you may remember from earlier books as one of the French Canadian hockey players at Harkness. He’s described as a “man-puppy” because he’s so exuberant.
It’s only available if you’ve signed up for her newsletter (which is free!), but she’s 3 chapters in and it’s good so far. If you liked her other Ivy Years books, I think you’ll like this one too.
All Systems Red by Martha Wells is free directly from Tor until 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on April 9.

The adventures of Murderbot can be yours for the low, low price of your email address.
Yes! Ren beat me to it but I agree – the adventures of Murderbot are awesome – can’t wait for the next book to come out. Also, as someone who already gets the Tor emails that you sign up for to get the free book they don’t inundate your inbox like some, they may even be as few as once a week (I can’t believe how often I get some emails from places that I bought one thing once!)
Second Kay’s comment about Clary Homeward and raise you: Belinda Carlisle? Or is there some kind of joke about it in the story?
I haven’t even read any Tessa Dare yet and already I’m making my own little collection.
I’m thinking of getting Any Duchess Will Do from that series first, and then maybe going back and reading a couple of the others if I like it? (All I needed to read in the blurb was ‘All she wants is to hang up her barmaid apron and open a bookshop.’ and I thought, okay! I’ll start with that one, don’t even care if it’s not the first book.)
@Crystal F – I also started with ‘Any Duchess Will Do’ and ended up reading the series in reverse order, and I don’t feel that it took anything away from my enjoyment of the experience. Such a funny book, but also very moving. Enjoy!
@CrystalF and DearReader- That was the first of the spindle cove books I read as well, and it’s my favorite of the series. I read all out of order because I would pick them up on sale. The only suggestion I have is read Do You Want to Start a Scandal last because it’s the story of the youngest of the Highwood sisters and I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it after the others.
I have an aunt Clary, short for Clarissa. There’s a Clary-for-Clarissa in the Cazalet quartet by Elizabeth Jane Howard. It’s a little startling to see it on a hero, I must admit. (Clare, maybe..?)
Wilma Counts was wrote one of my super-level keepers (above just the level of keeper, of course) back when she was writing Zebra Regency Romances – it was a delight to see her name pop up here!
@DearReader @Emily C Glad to know I’m not alone! I think ever since I read the second book in Lisa Kleypas’s Hathaway series first, I haven’t felt that I always ‘have’ read a series in order. (And I can tell my OCD to go have a seat.)
@Emily C Thank you for telling me about Do You Want to Start a Scandal. That’s another one I have on my wish list. : )
Any Duchess Will Do is the first book I started with in the series and is my favorite book of the series.
