Off Base
Off Base by Annabeth Albert is $1,99! This is a contemporary m/m romance with forced proximity, as the two heroes seem to be roommates. One of them is also a virgin if that’s your catnip. Many readers found this to be a pretty satisfying read. However, some felt they wanted more depth and connection with the characters.
After trading the barracks for a fixer-upper rental, navy SEAL Zack Nelson wants peace, not a roommate—especially not Pike, who sees things about Zack he most wants to hide. Pike’s flirting puts virgin Zack on edge. And the questions Pike’s arrival would spark from Zack’s teammates about his own sexuality? Nope. Not going there. But Zack can’t refuse.
Pike Reynolds knows there won’t be a warm welcome in his new home. What can he say? He’s an acquired taste. But he needs this chance to get his life together. Highly recommend Off Base, and all of Annabeth Albert’s books. This series is a bit of an offshoot of her #Gaymers (terrible name, but good books!) and it took me a long time to realize that we had met the MCs in the final book of that series.
I highly recommend cocaine blues and all of the phryne fisher books for fun, glamour and the delight of a heroine with unapologetic sexual agency who doesn’t want marriage or babies but forms a loyal found family.
I really enjoyed Off Base. Its my favorite Annabeth Albert so far.
I am so loving Hate to Want You. I discovered Alisha Rai from a book club I went to you about a year and half ago. She’s also got a great social media presence. I haven’t had a romance author really pull me in like this in 4 years.

I enjoyed Off Base. It’s a forced proximity, out for you, nerd/jock, renovation romance between a Navy SEAL and math professor. What can I say? – Annabeth Albert writes very tropey romances. It’s a spin off of her Gaymers series and the first in her Navy SEAL series.
I enjoy this author a lot, although I do not read her looking for super realistic or nuanced portrayals of contemporary queer culture (I read other authors for that, like Kris Ripper).
I hate to be a downer, but I feel like I have to mention as an asexual person that I found Cocaine Blues really hurtful and harmful. The villain is asexual, something I’m unfortunately very used to, but I thought it was particularly damaging that it highlighted Phryne’s sexuality by denigrating everyone else as prudes or frigid and unfeeling and evil. That’s not sex positivity. I don’t remember a lot of specifics because I tried to scrub it from my brain but it made me really sick and angry and I feel like other people who might be affected similarly would benefit from a warning.

Off Base was the first Annabeth Albert I read and I totes fell in love with the series and this author.
This book less saccharine than the ones from her Portland series, but still has enough heart to make it a super enjoyable read.
I bought When Lighting Strikes because it was suggested for fans of Jennifer Crusie and I am nothing if not a fan of JC but I couldn’t get into the book. Like zero Chemestry and it takes so loooong for anything to happen. I found the heroine unbelievable as a “innocent” who somehow manages and wants to run PR in Hollywood and the Hero actually said with I believe Zero sarcasam “I want to destroy your innocence “ or something to that degree. The characters just made no s new to me, and I actually didn’t finish which is rare.
