Mission: Improper
Mission: Improper by Bec McMaster is $2.99 at Amazon! This is book one in the The Blue Blood Conspiracy series, which is a spin off of McMaster’s London Steampunk series. While not completely necessary, reviewers say that readers might understand the nuances of the romance and setting more if they’ve read the London Steampunk series.
Three years ago, London society changed forever, with a revolution placing the widowed Queen firmly on the throne her blue blood husband tried to take from her. Humans, verwulfen and mechs are no longer considered the lesser classes, but not everybody is happy with the new order…
Entire families have gone missing in the East End. When Caleb Byrnes receives an invitation to join the Company of Rogues as an undercover agent pledged to protect the crown, he jumps at the chance to find out who, or what, is behind the disappearances. Hunting criminals is what the darkly driven blue blood does best, and though he prefers to work alone, the opportunity is too good to resist.
The problem? He’s partnered with Ingrid Miller, the fiery and passionate verwulfen woman who won a private bet against him a year ago. Byrnes has a score to settle, but one stolen kiss and suddenly the killer is not the only thing Byrnes is interested in hunting.
Soon they’re chasing whispered rumours of a secret project gone wrong, and a monster that just might be more dangerous than either of them combined. The only way to find out more is to go undercover among the blue blood elite… But when their hunt uncovers a mysterious conspiracy, Byrnes and Ingrid must set aside their age-old rivalry if they have any chance at surviving a treacherous plot.

Shadowheart
Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale is $1.99! This is the second book in the Medieval Hearts series. This book was a topic of discussion in a podcast episode with Emily Nagoski. Nagoski warns that there is rape in the romance novel, but says it does a wonderful job handling rage and shame. Definitely check out the podcast, or at least the transcript!
A fatally dangerous man—and the woman who stands in the way of all he has ever desired . . . Beautiful and ruthless, the elegant assassin Allegreto will stop at nothing to regain his rightful place. And the perfect instrument has just fallen into his hands, in the lovely form of Lady Elena—the long‑lost princess of the land he intends to wrest back from his enemies.
But she is no mere maiden to be possessed. Even as he forces her to bend to his will, in the heat of desire and fury Elena finds the hidden power in her own soul, a merciless passion and command that will bring her dark lover to his knees. Her mastery may destroy him . . . or build an unexpected future from the bitter ashes of his life and dreams.

Otherwise Engaged
Otherwise Engaged by Amanda Quick is $1.99! This is a standalone historical with a spy hero. Reviews say that the hero has some beta qualities about him, and there seems to be a whiff of a second chance romance. However, fans of Quick say this isn’t as great as some of her other books.
Miss Amity Doncaster, world traveler, is accustomed to adventure and risk. Benedict Stanbridge, a man of science and a spy for the Crown, has faced danger in the darker corners of foreign lands.
But they are about to face a threat that is shockingly close to home . . .
One does not expect to be kidnapped on a London street in broad daylight. But Amity Doncaster barely escapes with her life after she is trapped in a carriage with a blade-wielding man in a black silk mask who whispers the most vile taunts and threats into her ear. Her quick thinking, and her secret weapon, save her . . . for now.
But the monster known in the press as the Bridegroom, who has left a trail of female victims in his wake, has survived the wounds she inflicts and will soon be on his feet again. He is unwholesomely obsessed by her scandalous connection to Benedict Stanbridge—gossip about their hours alone in a ship’s stateroom seems to have crossed the Atlantic faster than any sailing vessel could. Benedict refuses to let this resourceful, daring woman suffer for her romantic link to him—as tenuous as it may be.
For a man and woman so skilled at disappearing, so at home in the exotic reaches of the globe, escape is always an option. But each intends to end the Bridegroom’s reign of terror in London, and will join forces to do so. And as they prepare to confront an unbalanced criminal in the heart of the city they love, they must also face feelings that neither of them can run away from. . .

Shades of Treason
Shades of Treason by Sandy Williams is 99c at Amazon! This is a scifi romance where the heroine and her former mentor experience pants feelings. Readers loved the amount of action in the book, but felt the ending was unresolved and seemed like a cliffhanger. The follow up book is $3.99, if you’re determined to continue.
Ash would have given her life to save her teammates.
Instead, they gave their lives to save hers.Lieutenant Ramie Ashdyn is an anomaly, a person whose genetic makeup makes her stronger and smarter than the average human. She’s pledged her life to protect the Coalition, an alliance of thirteen planetary systems, but when a top secret operation turns bloody, she’s charged with treason and the brutal executions of her teammates.
The Coalition needs the information Ash’s team stole on their last mission, so they send in Commander Rhys “Rest in Peace” Rykus to get it. He’s the man who’s responsible for turning Ash into an elite soldier… and he’s a man who isn’t, never was, and never will be in love with the woman he trained. Or so he tells himself.
Ash wants nothing more than to clear her name and be the woman her former instructor wants her to be, but the enemy who killed her teammates did more than frame her for treason and murder: they telepathically silenced her mind, preventing her from saying anything that might point to the truth about what happened.
Now Ash is trapped and set to be executed, the truth dying with her. Unless she can prove her innocence. But taking that path could destroy the Coalition she’s sworn to preserve and protect…

Re: the McMaster book – What is a verwulfen? Is it a vampire/werewolf hybrid? A werewolf with a heavy eastern European accent?
@Deborah: The blue bloods are vampires, the verwulfen are werewolves & the mechs are proto-cyborgs. Set in an alternate steampunk England.
@hng23 – thank you!
I know, we have the *heart* button so vapid “thank you” posts aren’t necessary, but then how does the helpful person know the specific person they helped is grateful? Okay…here are some random sale book thoughts to legitimate this comment:
Bec McMaster – Fortunately, my library has the (earlier, non-Blue Blood Conspiracy) London Steampunk books, so I’ll probably miss this sale while I bring myself up to speed on the universe…as soon as I’m finished reading all of Hoyt’s Maiden Lane books, thanks to Monday’s sales post.
Laura Kinsale – I read the podcast transcript (thank you for the transcripts, SBs!) and now I’m googling all the Shadowheart reviews because my readerly curiosity is piqued but this book could be a big miss for me. (For $1.99, I’m not cavilling at the price, just at the potential emotional damage. Kinsale’s books hook my feelings, and she doesn’t always resolve things in a way that soothes all the pain she caused along the way.)
Amanda Quick – Jayne Ann Krentz is my Brokeback Mountain. As far as I’m concerned, none of her books published in this century have included a satisfying romance, but I just can’t quit her. Thank heaven for these sale prices.
