  • The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl

The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae

The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae is $1.99! This is a memoir with a lot of humor and even inspired Rae’s HBO show Insecure. Many readers found Rae’s essays to be self-deprecating and relatable. However, some readers had issues with Rae’s narrative style.

In the bestselling tradition of Sloane Crosley’s I Was Told There’d Be Cake and Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, a collection of humorous essays on what it’s like to be unabashedly awkward in a world that regards introverts as hapless misfits, and black as cool.

My name is “J” and I’m awkward—and black. Someone once told me those were the two worst things anyone could be. That someone was right. Where do I start?

Being an introvert in a world that glorifies cool isn’t easy. But when Issa Rae, the creator of the Shorty Award–winning hit series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” is that introvert—whether she’s navigating love, work, friendships, or “rapping”—it sure is entertaining. Now, in this debut collection of essays written in her witty and self-deprecating voice, Rae covers everything from cybersexing in the early days of the Internet to deflecting unsolicited comments on weight gain, from navigating the perils of eating out alone and public displays of affection to learning to accept yourself—natural hair and all.

A reflection on her own unique experiences as a cyber pioneer yet universally appealing, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girlis a book no one—awkward or cool, black, white, or other—will want to miss.

  • To Charm a Naughty Countess

To Charm a Naughty Countess by Theresa Romain

RECOMMENDED: To Charm a Naughty Countess by Theresa Romain is 99c! This is part of Sourcebooks Casablanca holiday sales. In an earlier review, Elyse gave the book a B+:

This book is all kinds of Elyse bait. It has a tortured virgin hero. It has a badass heroine who is, for all intents and purposes (or intensive purposes, as my coworkers like to say), a rake. It has witty Regency sass-banter. I’d probably get into a sketchy panel van for this book, to be honest.

    Can a reclusive duke . . .
Brilliant but rumored mad, Michael Layward, the impoverished Duke of Wyverne, has no success courting heiresses until widowed Lady Stratton takes up his cause—after first refusing his suit.

    . . . Win London’s most powerful countess?

Caroline Graves, the popular Countess of Statton, sits alone at the pinnacle of London society and has vowed never to remarry. When Michael—her counterpart in an old scandal—returns to town after a long absence, she finds herself as enthralled with him as ever. As she guides the anxiety-ridden duke through the trials of London society, Caroline realizes that she’s lost her heart. But if she gives herself to the only man she’s ever loved, she’ll lose the hard won independence she prizes above all.

  • Winterwood

    Winterwood by Jacey Bedford

RECOMMENDED: Winterwood by Jacey Bedford is $1.99! Carrie was excited about this release and wrote a Lightning Review for it. Despite some uneven pacing, she gave it a B grade:

The world building is fascinating and the characters compelling, but I do hope the sequel will have more even pacing.

Set in 1800 in Britain, Mad King George is on the throne with Napoleon Bonaparte knocking on the door. Unregistered magic users are pursued to the death, while in every genteel home resides uncomplaining rowankind bondservants who have become so commonplace that no one can recall where they came from.

Meanwhile, Rossalinde Tremayne is satisfied with her life as a cross-dressing privateer captain on the high seas. But a bitter deathbed visit to her estranged mother changes her life completely when she inherits a magical winterwood box. Now, not only is she confronted with a newly-discovered brother, and an annoyingly handsome wolf shapeshifter, Rossalinde has to decide whether or not to open the box to free rowankind and right an ancient wrong—even if it brings the downfall of Britain.

This brand-new series is perfect for fans of Elizabeth Bear, D.B. Jackson, and Marie Brennan, as well as readers of historical fiction who are looking for an accessible gateway to fantasy.

  • Within Reach

    Within Reach by Sarah Mayberry

Within Reach by Sarah Mayberry is $1.99! This was recently recommended in our Young Widows & Widowers Rec League and Elyse said it’s heavy on the feels. However, other readers had a hard time with all the grief in the book. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads. Have you read this one?

Being a single dad was never on Michael Young’s agenda. Yet with the sudden loss of his wife, that’s exactly the role he has. On his best days, he thinks he can handle it. On his worst… Luckily, family friend Angie Bartlett has his back, easily stepping in to help out.

    Lately, though, something has changed.

Michael is noticing exactly how gorgeous Angie is, and how single she is. She’s constantly in his thoughts and he feels an attraction he never expected. Does he dare disrupt the very good thing they have going? If they have a fling that goes nowhere, he stands to lose everything – including her. But if they make it work, he stands to gain everything!

    Me: Oh, that sounds goo—
    Amazon: You already bought it.
    Me: Well, how about thi—
    Amazon: That, too.
    Me: Okay, but I know—
Amazon: HONESTLY, WOMAN, DO YOU EVER LOOK AT YOUR KINDLE?

And thus, the humble plastic rectangle kept its magical purchasing powers leashed for one more day…

  2. Joy says:

Funny how the description of a book sounds so good so you buy it, forget about it, and then read another description. Thank goodness that Amazon warns us….if someone doesn’t add to the book title. Bought three books I already had that way.

For the New Year I am absolutely going to clean out my closets, organize my shoes better and read all the books on my Kindle—well, at least that’s my New Years resolution THIS year.

  3. Hazel says:

Amazon says Awkward Black Girl is $12.48/£9.99.

  4. cleo says:

  5. Amanda says:

@Hazel: It’s showing up as $1.99 for me. Unfortunately, most of the book deals are US only.

  6. Cristie says:

@Ren–Lol that happens to me too all the time! We’ll see what happens when I try buying the Theresa Romain book because i think i might not have that one…

  7. Meg says:

@Ren: Thank goodness Amazon lets you do returns. I accidentally double dipped on a couple Courtney Milan books this week.

  8. KellyM says:

    @ Ren and @ Meg

I have that happen all the time. Either Amazon said I already own it or I think I don’t and I just bought an updated or rereleased version. I also agree that good thing Amazon lets me return them! I am learning to check Goodreads first to see if I have shelved a copy. I think it is because of my staggering tbr pile and I keep trying to add to it.

  9. CelineB says:

Tailored for Trouble by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff is $1.99 at Amazon at least. I’ve seen this one pop up on some best of 2016 lists and it’s one I’ve been wanting to check out for a while.

  10. CelineB says:

Also there’s three Patricia Gaffney novels in that sale cleo mentioned- Outlaw in Paradise, Another Eden, and Fortune’s Lady.

  11. Katie Lynn says:

There are a bunch of RaeAnn Thayne titles for sale today, and I recall seeing a box set of one of her series.

The ParaNora set for Stars of Mithra is on sale for $5, which is a great deal (the separate titles sell for $7 each)

Robyn Carr’s Virgin River Christmas is a KDD for $1, and there’s also a box set for her of three books for $5

  12. No, the Other Anne says:

I’m intrigued by Winterwood, but my per-book budget is 0.99. There’s a lot of catnip there though, and they name-checked Marie Brennan…Have any of you read it?

(And I’m all over the Theresa Romain, mostly for Elyse’s panel van comment. If Elyse ever does a two panel-van review I’ll probably try to move right into that book.)

  13. Katie Lynn says:

All of the Julie Ann Walker Black Knights, Inc books are currently $1. They usually sell for about $6
