Dark Places
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn is a Kindle Daily Deal and is $2.99! Sharp Objects is also part of the KDD today. Some found the format a little frustrating, with all the jumping between POVs and between timelines. But many said the book kept them entertained with the mystery and all its twists. Also, be warned it’s a pretty graphic book. Have you read this?
Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in “The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.” She survived—and famously testified that her fifteen-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, the Kill Club—a secret society obsessed with notorious crimes—locates Libby and pumps her for details. They hope to discover proof that may free Ben. Libby hopes to turn a profit off her tragic history: She’ll reconnect with the players from that night and report her findings to the club—for a fee. As Libby’s search takes her from shabby Missouri strip clubs to abandoned Oklahoma tourist towns, the unimaginable truth emerges, and Libby finds herself right back where she started—on the run from a killer.

Waking the Dragon
Waking the Dragon by Juliette Cross is 99! This is the first book in the Vale of Stars series that has a secret dragon society! The heroine is a reporter trying to investigate said society and the hero is a dragon bodyguard assigned to accompany her while she pokes around. Readers loved the amount of detail, but warn of insta-love. Several of Cross’ other titles are available for less than $3.
The Gladium Province is on the verge of civil unrest as humans and Morgons, the dragon-hybrid race, clash once more. But amid disorder can also arise passion.
When the bodies of three human women are discovered in Morgon territory—with the DNA of several Morgon men on the victims—it’s just a matter of time before civil unrest hits the Province. But for ambitious reporter Moira Cade, it’s more than just a story, and it may mean risking her own life.
Descending into the dark underworld of Morgon society, Moira is paired with Kol Moonring, Captain of the Morgon Guard, for her protection. Fiercely independent, Moira bristles at his dominance, and defies his will at every turn. Yet resistance proves futile when passion flares between them, awakening powerful emotions within both, body and soul. But as the killings continue, can their fiery newfound bond survive an even greater evil—one that threatens all of humanity, Morgonkind, and Moira’s very soul?

Bound by Night
Bound by Night by Amanda Ashley is $1.99! This is the first book in the Bound paranormal romance series and seems to have some Beauty and the Beast elements. Some readers felt the heroine was a bit naive and TSTL for their liking, while many recommend this one for lovers of vampire romances.

Getting Lucky
Getting Lucky by Jennifer Seasons is $1.99! This book has an Irish hero and thoroughbred horses! Readers really liked the hero. Who can blame them, honestly? And it’s pretty light on angst. However, some found the romance a bit slow and it was hard to keep them engaged.
Welcome to Fortune, Colorado—where the air is clean, the men are rugged, and the all the good ones… are bachelors.
Born into the infamous Charlemagne equestrian empire, Shannon has been raised to do whatever it takes for the family business. Even if it means going undercover and digging up dirt on a competitor. It’s easy enough when she believes he’s a bad guy whose success seems too good to be true. In fact, Shannon’s excited to put the aggravatingly sexy Irishman in his place and get back in her father’s good graces. All she needs is to stay focused on the goal… and out of Sean Muldoon’s arms.
From stealing a thoroughbred racehorse from the Irish mob to striking gold in the mountains of Colorado, there’s little Sean hasn’t experienced. But when it comes to resisting his hot new stable manager, he’s out of luck. With the mob hot on his heels, keeping Shannon off their radar is all but impossible, and he’s not about to put her in danger too. Sean wants Shannon, but how can he offer her a future… when he can’t even guarantee tomorrow?

Riptide Publishing has select titles for .99 today and tomorrow – http://www.riptidepublishing.com/end-of-2016/99
It’s a good sale and a good chance to try some LGBTQ+ romance if you haven’t. I highly recommend Labyrinth by Alex Beecroft – queer romance set in Ancient Crete. it’s a reimagining of the origins of the minotaur legend from the Minoans point of view. One of the main characters is an agender inventor and it’s great fun.
Once Upon a Rose by Laura Florand is .99 at Amazon; doesn’t look like it’s discounted at other retailers yet.
Michelle Diener’s Dark Horse is free through the 30th at Amazon, per the author’s web site. It’s KU so won’t be elsewhere. This won a Prism Award for Best Futuristic and is a well-done SF romance in a solid Trek-type universe. I paid for it and don’t regret doing so.
I read Flynn’s “Sharp Objects” and “Dark Places” back before she hit the big time. I actually like all of her books, mostly because she is very good at drawing dark female characters that aren’t stereotypical. My biggest criticism of all of her books is that the endings are unsatisfying. (I truly got the feeling when reading Gone Girl that the author hadn’t actually decided how to end it, and it sort of floundered to a halt.) Still, I’d recommend these, particularly to readers that need to cleanse their palates with some “anti-romance.”
Okay, I was going to post about Gillian Flynn, but Ele did it for me. They are very dark and psychological, but maybe that’s what gives them a cathartic effect. I liked “Gone Girl” the least of the three she’s written.
Interesting. I hated the ending of ‘Gone Girl’ with the Fire of 10,000 suns. So abrupt and unsatisfying. I was listening to the audio version and had to check to see if I had the entire book.
Gone Girl has a very unsatisfying ending for sure. I loved Dark Places and felt that the ending was a bit more hopeful than Gone Girl. I haven’t read Sharp Objects yet.
